Portland and Brooklyn are Virtually the Same City, Venn Diagram Shows

Venn Diagram Portland vs Brooklyn - Portlandia vs Brokelandia Hipsters

On the heels of Portlandia parody Brokelandia, comes this Venn Diagram by Brooklynite Julie Gerstein, which sums up the similarities between Portland and Brooklyn in terms of similarities — of which there are many — and differences, of which there are few: namely, Portland has affordable rent, and Brooklyn has Maggie Gyllenhaal.

This is all inspired a bit by “Portlandia,” the Fred Armisen/Carrie Brownstein show on IFC that portrays Portland as the terminally hipster, progressive place stuck in the 90s where young people go to retire: ”Watching ‘Portlandia’ was a little headsmackingly close to home for me, though, because I live in Brooklyn,” Gerstein writes. “And not just any part of Brooklyn — Greenpoint, which is the Polish neighborhood directly to the north of Hipster Ground Zero, Williamsburg.”

Gerstein also writes the first negative review we’ve read of Brokelandia, the Portlandia parody posted this week on Vimeo (“awful… don’t watch it, it’s truly appalling,” she says).

  1. Jo Mama says:

They forgot “ethnic diversity” and “part of New York City” under the Brooklyn set.
