Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.
This program needs your help in Crown Heights on two dates. To volunteer, reply with the program code to volunteer(a)behindthebook.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Date: Thursday, March 29th

About the workshop: The Museum by Susan Verde inspired second-graders to explore their intuitive responses to art. Field trip chaperones will travel with the class to visit a museum, then guide a small group as they view the exhibits. Writing coaches will help students use their new vocabulary to revise their drafts, which describe their responses to the artwork they felt a personal connection to. Their work will be published in a book.
