Hi y'all! I just moved to Brooklyn from Texas, and I am interested in moving to Bay Ridge. I am currently staying with friends in Park Slope, and though it's lovely, Bay Ridge just felt homier to me. My joke is that all the kids in PS can speak five languages, but can't say "please" or "thank you" in any of them!

I was wondering if anyone could suggest good, safe areas to live in? I need to be near the R and the stores/laundromats, since I don't have a car.

I went on a walk down by the water on the Promenade (really pretty!), but if I live near the water, that's a ways from the train, right?

Are there any good supermarkets in Bay Ridge?

When I get an apartment, do I need to go through a broker to get a good place?

      Thank you very much!

Really most of Bay Ridge is safe and a fairly nice area. The R train runs alone 4th Ave, but you probably dont want to live on 4th ave - it is mainly a commercial block. 3rd ave has lots of shops, supermarkets, bars, restaurants, etcs., as does 5th ave. I personally like pretty much any block between 3rd and Ridge (what would be 2nd ave). Close to 3rd ave shops, short walk to subway, and just a few minute walk down to the Promenade where you can also catch the express buses to Manhattan.

Thank you very much! Is there any place to actively avoid, besides the crack house everyone is talking about?

Not really that I know of at least. I think it's a pretty safe area. I mean, maybe you dont want to walk alone in the park at 3AM but it's a nice safe area.

We go out most weekends and usually stumble home late and never have any problems. Mostly just see other people doing the same, lol.

As far as an area to live, the only area I could possibly suggest to avoid is around 5th ave in the high 60's, low 70s. Nothing wrong really with the area, it's sort of a "Little Middle-East", lots of sign in arabic in the windows, etc. I'm sure there is no problem living there, but if you are not from that area, you maybe would feel a bit out of place.

Also you probably don't want to go further east than 5th or 6th ave, as it starts to get further away from the subway and the main Aves of 3rd and 5th. Plus the highway comes thru the neighborhood around 7th ave, so it's not exactly a quiet area around there.
