Regular readers know that Brownstoner and Brooklynian mutually utilize each other as a source for content, and to help get stories publicized.

In that spirit, I thought I would point out this very good piece by their contributor who posts under the pseudonym Montrose Morris:

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Its interesting to me that this history always gets forgotten. The presence of people of color in Brooklyn dates back before the founding of the city. Whenever someone claims that central Brooklyn has only been inhabited by blacks since the 60's it's like nails on a chalkboard.

      1660s?

The Dutch West India Company introduced slavery in 1625 with the importation of eleven black slaves into New Amsterdam (present-day New York City). All the colony's slaves, however, were freed upon its surrender to the British.[12]
