Bike share in NYC starts this summer (2012). What it means is you'll be able to "check out" a bike from a self-service docking station. Alta Bicycle Share is running the system, which will include 10,000 bikes at more than 600 stations.
Community Planning Workshops are being held to get your input on how bike share should work, and where stations should go.
Here's a list of upcoming meetings you can attend:

Tomorrow night (THURSDAY, February 23rd, 2012, 6:00 PM–8:00 PM) is the Community Board 2 workshop to figure out bike share plans for Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, and Clinton Hill. It's being done in partnership with NYC Council Members Letitia James and Stephen Levin, and NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery. The Workshop will be held at St. Francis College, Callahan Center, 180 Remsen Street.
The first community workshop was a big success, according to NYC DOT, with more than 100 Manhattanites in attendance:
