Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz hosts the 2012 Martin Luther King Jr. Free concert series.The Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series presents Free musical concerts that reflect the African-American contribution to our cultural heritage. During the summer, usually on a Monday Night in July and August, seven concerts are staged (weather permitting) at Brooklyn’s Wingate Field. The series began in 1982.
The public is encouraged to bring their own chairs because seating is limited.
The following is the MLK Jr 2012 concerts schedule of performances:
JULY 23rd – Caribbean Night Starring The Mighty Sparrow and a cast of artists yet to be announced, will present a special performance in “Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago”.
JULY 30th – Hip Hop Night featuring Public Enemy and Salt-n-Pepa
AUG 6th – R&B Night. Heads Of State Tour featuring: Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant
AUG 13th – Jazz/Soul Night featuring LEDISI
AUG 20th - Gospel Night – Featuring Vickie Winans and the legendary Cissy Houston, who will perform a Tribute to her daughter Whitney Houston.

Jazz performances tend to be a very chill, relaxing evening.
I'd be most interested in the one on Aug 13th.
