      Hi
My great grandfather, John Bruno, had a grocery store on the corner of 6th ave & 17th st until it was taken (bought)for the construction of the Prospect Expressway.
That's when he came to live with us on east 5 st and ave U.
      He died in 1957.
      Does anyone remember?

That's a great photo. It looks like your grandfather had a great business and it's a shame that it got bulldozed. I would check with these people to see if anyone remembers: http://brooklynian.com/forum/brooklyn-back-when/brooklyn-back-when-open-thread-continued/page/11#post-745995

My parents had a delicatessen (Henry's) on the corner of 7th Avenue and 18th Street, a couple of blocks away. It also was destroyed to build the expressway. A year later they bought another delicatessen on 7th between 10th & 11th streets. Both now gone, but I still live there.
