Hello All, Finished with Doctors until next Thursday. That will be my Cystoscope. Not a pleasant test but very necessary.

Patsy, wait until your GEANDCHILDREN start driving! When I got my license in Brooklyn many, many years ago, the saying was "If you can drive in Brooklyn, you can drive anywhere. Furthermore, if you can drive around Grand Army Plaza and get off on the street you wanted, you are a professional driver!" I took my test at Fletcher & Creamer streets in Red Hook. It was a very heavy industrial area. I came to an intersection where two large trucks were blocking the intersection while the drivers were BSing. I sat there and finally the inspector said "aren't you going to blow your horn? I said no sir. The horn is only for emergency warnings." He said if I would have blown the horn he would have failed me. He got out of the car and went over to the trucks, flashed his badge and told the drivers that if they were not out of the intersection by the time he got back to the car, he was giving both of them tickets. They moved in a hurry. I was glad I studied the drivers manual. I did some of my drivers learning on 2nd ave near Bush Terminal. It was bumpy (Belgian Cobble Stones) and there were R.R. tracks all over the place. It prepared me for the worst.

Okay you folks who run this blog. There are at least two messages on page 17 since yesterday. Why is a page delayed when the old page is completed? We are losing people from this blog like crazy and one of the reasons is problems with getting on and having their input showed timely. Administrators, if you want this blog to die you are doing an excellent job in killing it!!!!

      Hey Bobby C,

Just to add a little to the Drivers test story, I took the test in a friends car. Luckily I had practiced some in it. It was a dodge and you could drive it as an automatic or stick shift. I drove it stick shift on the test for two reasons. 1. In those days if you took your test with an automatic transmission they stamped it right on your License-"Automatic Only". 2, My Fathers car (a 48 buick Special) was stick and that was the only car I was going to be driving. It was the one I did most of my practising in.One day down on 2nd ave I was practising with my Father riding shotgun. My Mother was in the back seat. My Father said "Make a U turn here". Not knowing any better, I made a U with out slowing down and threw my Mother across the back seat. As you can imagine I heard a little about that for years..

      Knock, Knock Is Anyone there????

Tomorrow is a big day for me. I get the results of my P.S.A. test. If it is any higher then 0.1 I could have very deep problems. I also will have a Cystoscopy. I really can not describe on here how it is exactly done without having censorship. It is not a pleasant test. They use a certain part of your body to insert a rubber tube with a light and camera on the tip. They go into the bladder and have to check for tiny (or God forbid) big Tumors any where on the way or in the bladder itself. I will get those results immediately. The liquid they put into the baldder so it is not collapsed, will be drawn off in part and send to the lab for checking for cancer cells. Problems on any of these tests could put me in big trouble. So far the Pacemaker is working fine. The Cardiologist said no to the Gastro guy regarding a Colonoscopy. They want that put off for at least 3 months from the Pacemaker implant. So the biopsy of the Thyroid will have to wait also. I guess I could be described as a Physical wreck but I will keep hanging in there!!!

Talking about driving in Brooklyn the other day reminded me of one snowy winter night when I had my Brother & his wife and my Aunt & Uncle in the car and we came home from a service in Long Island. I forget whether it was a confirmation or what. I dropped my Aunt & Uncle off at 90th street & Ft Hamilton Pkway where they lived and drove home to 12th Street. When we got to the house there was one spot left near the house. The snow had piled up quite a bit. I had one chance of backing the car into the spot and I made it! I am still proud of that parking job about 60 years later!!! If my Father was still alive he would say" Warren, stop patting yourself on the back or you may dislocate your arm!!!"

      Kindest greetings to all!

When I was growing up in East New York we had malt shops on numerous street corners, especially on Livonia & Pennsylvania Avenues. For years, it was the most wholesome place to hang out as you could get a nice malt, sing with or dance to the latest Rock & Roll songs, and you could get a comic book or the newspapers. Sadly, the old malt shops went the way of the Romans. Kids started to hang out with less than wholesome characters and life sorta went downhill.

Folks tell me the same thing happened here in the Twin Cities. But, at long last, some good news has emerged: the soda fountain and the soda "jerk" have made a big comeback here:

      http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/taste/190081121.html

"The reception among the soda-sipping public has been enthusiastic."

My hope is that the good folks of Brooklyn will have the same experience.

      1. The results of my Urological tests on Thursday were pretty good but not perfect. The Cystoscopy did not indicate any Cancer present in my Bladder. The lab test results will tell us for sure. The P.S.A., not bad but not good. I have been at <0.1 for a couple of years. This test came back as 0.1. My Urologist will wait for the next P.S.A. in 6 months. If it jumps to 0.2 I will have to go back on Hormone shots in the butt or belly.

      2. many years ago there was an Ice Cream parlor that served Malts, Sundaes, Floats etc:. It was on 5th avenue between 9th & 10th Streets (closer to 9th street down a couple of doors from the newstand.)We used to go there after Basketball games, Youth group meetings at our Church on 12th Street etc:. One of my favorites was a slice of pound or marble cake toasted with a scoop of their home made Ice Cream on top!

      3. Pacemaker seems to be working pretty good. Have had no real light headed attacks since it was implanted.

Do you remember when---- Subways, Trolleys & Busses cost a nickle and so did ice cream cones, pepsi & coke. Steeplechase had two daily punch cards. I think one was 39 cents & the other 69 cents, Saturday Matinee in the Globe, Avon & 16th St movies cost a dime, The Daily News and the Daily Mirror were 2cents. My Father used to give me a nickle to go get the News & Mirror and I got to spend the penny change on candy!!!Milk in school came in pint bottles and I think it was 3 cents a day. The bleachers in Ebbetts Field was 50 cents and when it went to 60 cents people screamed bloddy murder. The cop on your beat knew your name and your Fathers name as well! The 5th Ave Trolley went from Atlantic or Flatbush ave all the way out to the 90's. You could get transfer slips from one Trolley to the other free! I remember all that and a lot more. Guess I am an OLD GOAT at that.

Hi Folks - good to see that all is well.

Warren - you mentioned Ebbets Field: do you remember Hilda Chester? Did you ever hear the story about the day she (ahem) lied in court to protect Leo Durocher after he bopped a naughty fan? Evidently, she said the fan cursed her out & Leo was only trying to protect her honor. Well, the judge bought the story and dismissed charges against Leo the Lip! Hilda's sister Mildred was a good friend of mine and she, too, was a wonderful person.

I vaguely remember the old trolleys as they were around until 1956. But I do remember the trackless trolleys as they were used for at least another 10 years:

      http://bus.nycsubway.org/trackless.html

And I definitely remember the Steeplechase:

      http://www.wnyc.org/i/620/350/80/photologue/photos/steeplechase.jpg

Well, I went shopping yesterday and bought some strawberries, sweet cream, cranberry juice, coco water, and a couple of apples. Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna make a malt shake each and every day for the next 5 days. Yum, yummmy!

      Cheers ....

      Hello there,

I remember a real mean Matron at the Globe who used to check the color of your ticket stub and if it indicated you had already seen the main features (two of them) she threw you out. I hope that was not your Mom's friend!!!

I do not think any of you are old enough to remember this but during and right after WWII we used to get a Merry Go Round come up the block pulled by two horses. The Merry go round was not electric. It had a handle that had to be turned to make the ride move. The guy who owned it would start it up and then make kids think he was doing you a favor by letting you turn the handle. A real Tom Sawyer trick. We also had vegetable wagons pulled by horses and every so often somebody who had a victory garden in their back yard would pull up, pull a shovel out of the trunk and shovel the Horse Manure into the trunk and take off. We also had ice and oil trucks pulled by horses. On our block it was "Joe: the ice man.

Hi, Pretty busy theses days. In between Doctor & Lab visits, Carol & I have been looking at Independent Living Apartments. We found one we like and are about to put our home on the market. We need the proceeds on the sale of the house to be able to afford the monthly rent in the Independent living place. We know which apartment we want. We had lunch in their gourgeous dining room. The food was fabulous. You get breakfast and one other meal a day between 11:3o and 6:30. Up to you when you want to eat. The third meal would be taken care of easily. The apt has a kitchen with a refrig, stove and microwave. The real estate market here has picked up some so we have our hopes up for a sale at a decent price on our house. Meanwhile we had a new A/C & Heater unit installed last week. That was covered by a co-op we belong to for all appliances. Will kep you informed of progress.

      Hi Folks!

I'm sure most of us remember the old saw: an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Growing up in God's Country, and being mindful of my rather delicate health (due to respiratory problems, digestive, and other issues) I faithfully adhere to that old saw and always ate apples. NY Golden Delicious being my absolute favorite ~ alas they cannot be found here in Minnesota.

Now that I'm in my 60s (honestly, I did not think I'd go this far), I thought about changing my life for the better by adopting a new health regimen. First, I dropped gluten from my diet and lost 22 lbs in only 8 weeks (my doctor was very happy to see that). Then, I took up using apple-cider-vinegar (won't mention the brand) which is purported to be a great way to maintain one's health. Being particularly vulnerable to stomach viruses, I found that this ACV product really helps to relieve pain and other discomforts associated with that type of illness.

If you Google ACV you will find tens of thousands of testimonies from people who have experienced very positive results from using this item as part of their daily regimen. I wonder if anyone on this forum have had similar experiences and if you'd like to share them with others here.

      Always be well!

Hello all you bloggers, Well it has been kind of cold down here the past few days but NO SNOW!!!!We had a warmer then usual February but March has been colder. Many mornings lately in this areas in the low 40's to high 30's. Afternoons a little better. Anna, I had Catarct surgery on both eyes a couple of years ago. I could not believe the difference in my vision. I was getting ready to give up night driving completely but since the surgery I can handle it fine. The drops you have to take is the biggest pain in the Butt but the surgery itself is a snap.

Patsy, you said Toniann will be attending college in S.I.. Do I take it she made a final decision on the school she will be going too? I am not feeling too bad but I have lousy feelings a few times a day. I think it is some of the medication I am taking.

The Real Estate lady was here for 4 hours yesterday and will be back this afternoon to finalize the listing. She estimate 3-6 months for the sale. We shall see. Timing is a big problem because we have to hope that the apt we want will be available around the same time as our closing on the house. We can not afford to be paying for two places at once very long!!!

      Happy Friday one & all.

We have about 14 inches of snow on the ground but the good news is that it's all melting. The Midwest has had a terrible drought in the past 2 years but the recent snows will alleviate some of that.

The college & high school baseball & softball seasons are just around the corner and I'm all excited about that.

      Have wonderful day!

Hello All, You can all keep your snow thank you! We have a law against snowing here!! Debbie! A 21 year old party!!!Better have someone checking I.D.s at the door. Make the under 21 drivers the designated drivers. Prodigal Son. Hate to let you down but I will not get excited till the regular pro baseball season starts. I feel the same way about football. If the NFL is not on I might watch a college game but some of them are so inept it bores me. When a friend of mine had a Grandson playing first string for Boston College I watched their games and they were on quite often. Down here I must admit college Football is THE THING!. Florida has had a lot of championship teams over the years and when The Gators play the Seminoles, it is wild!

Kindest greetings one & all ...

Warren - surprise! I am a big Florida Gators & SEC fan - they just had a great match vs Kentucky but came up short. College football may well be the king of amateur sports but there are many others which provide much fun for all.

While there is plenty of snow on the ground, I'm in my warm apartment and just had a superb milkshake comprised of red grapes, coco water, coco cream, & sweet cream. The taste is beyond description!

Everyone have a fabulous weekend and remember that it's Daylight Savings tonight.
