In our little neighborhood in Brooklyn if you leave your dog tied up outside while you go into a store I think you're pretty much telling people that you're an idiot. (Far too many get stolen.)

However when you leave your dog tied up outside while it's raining i think you're pretty much announcing to the world that you're a phuqing POS.

While I'd never leave my dog tied up in the rain, I often do leave her outside the store while I run in for a hot minute to grab some grub.

However, if anyone feels big enough to try and take her, feel free. It's not often I get to see her rip someone apart. The perks of owning a 120lb rottie/shepherd mix.

I once saw a dog left outside in cold weather while his owner was in the bar tossing drinks back. That made me very mad. In the case of someone leaving their dog out in the rain, well obviously that's not an ideal route. You don't know the specifics of the case though. Maybe the dog is fine in the rain but rips the house to shreds in complete panic mode when left in the dry indoors. Or not, but depending on the dog and the amount of rain, it might be preferable. Unless you wait around to ask the owner you won't know either.

Now I find people who approach dogs that are left tied up to be idiots. Don't go up to a dog you don't know when the owner isn't around and the dog could potentially be stressed. It irritates me almost as much as when parents allow their kids to rush a strange dog to pet it without asking the owner first or giving the owner time to react.

I pretty much think a dog should never be tied and left alone, but what's worse is when they are tied to a pole along the curb. I've seen these dogs just standing in the road!

Before I had a dog in the city, I assumed I would take him everywhere and tie him out while I ran quick errands but once I had a dog here I realized that would never happen. There are many reasons not to do it, besides all the dog-nappings that actually do happen.

here's the thing, tateinbk, if that's the kind of dog you have, it should have a crate for such occasions. or, if it's that kind of emergency and you don't, lock the dog in the bathroom.

what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.

brooklynpotter, I had a dog like that at one point and when crated she would rub her nose bloody and if contained in a small room would tear out the walls and make her paws bloody. Over time of course she got better, and she was best if kept to a routine. Once I got home though, if I had to go out again she would lose it. I also made every effort to only pick up what was needed when I was out in the first place or go to then pet friendly places like Duane Reade. But yeah, occasionally this didn't happen and I had to race inside a store. You just don't know, is my point, and letting out that kind of blanket judgement is irritating to me. Certainly I think it is foolish to ever leave a little dog tied up, but in this past case both I and my boxer were well known in the neighborhood, by the people outside the grocery store etc.
