Lovely Miss Lily, 2-Year Old Kitten Needs A Home Urgently

Can you please give Lily a home?

Hello, I am from New Zealand and have been living in Park Slope, Brooklyn which is where I rescued the Lovely Miss Lily on 3 October.

I took her to Animal Kind to get her thoroughly checked. Happily, the vet found that she is healthy. All her bood tests are good. She has been spayed and she is up-to-date with her shots. And, she is negative for both Feline AIDS and leukemia. (Vet records are all available.)

Lily is a two-year old tortoiseshell. She likes being around people. I can not say that she sings or dances or tells terrific stories (although she probably does have some great stories if you can get her to spill!)

She is an affectionate kitten who loves to sit with you and keep you company while she purrs loudly. She might be happier as the only cat in the family.

I am not able to keep Lily and I desperately need to find her a home so that she does not have to go back on the street. I am leaving the USA in 3 weeks time.

Please let me know if you can adopt Lily or know of someone who might?

Thanks for rescuing Miss Lily although I certainly hope that you won't put her back on the street if you can't find her a home in three weeks - she will have no winter coat and will freeze since she has been indoors since October. Be sure to advertise her on Craig's List (be selective with adopters of course) and contact Brooklyn Animal Action to see if they may have a foster home for her. Have you tried contacting other rescue groups in the area - New Hope, Sean Casey, City Critters, Kitty Kind, Metro Pets, Mayor's Alliance, Angelica Cats, BARC, etc.? 5th Avenue Cat Clinic will sometimes take in rescued cats and adopt them out for a small fee. The ASPCA in Manhattan has intake days on Tuesdays and there is always The Humane Society.

ASPCA info is here: Please call the ASPCA Adoption Center at (212) 876-7700. If we have room in the shelter, we’ll ask you to bring them in during our public intake hours on Tuesdays between 1:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M.

Also try calling Sean Casey at 718- 436-5163.

Also try contacting Bide-A-Wee at 866-262-8133.

If a shelter has room you can schedule an intake. Please do NOT dump on the street as winter is approaching ans she may die. Also do NOT bring to the city shelter AC&C Animal Care and Control as they are a HIGH KILL SHELTER and she may die there.

You helped this kitty once now make sure she is set for life by following through and getting her a safe home.

Do NOT be shy about asking for an adoption fee, someone who loves the kitty will not mind and if they cannot afford it how can they afford food or vet care?

Thank you for those of you who kindly sent me advice on finding Miss Lily a home. I appreciate your good will. However, I thought it might be helpful for me to let you know what the situation in New York's shelters seems to be at this time.

Did you know that of the dozens of pet shelters that I have contacted in the past couple of months exactly NONE are taking felines older than12 weeks (3 months) and that there is "no demand" for adult cats (a 2-year old is considered to be an adult).

Can you believe that the Humane Society is saying they will not have space for another cat "for a year"?

Or that I left a message for the ASPCA Intake Officer but have heard nothing back. They also state a preference for younger cats?

Or that Sean Casey Rescue is "totally full to the gills" and tells me that nobody wants adult cats when there are so many kittens to be adopted? Or that the Mayor's Alliance partners are only able to help you post notices to various websites or put flyers up (and only in neighbourhoods where locals don't tear them down immediately)?

I have gone the flyer route and there were no takers, as there weren't for other people who similarly were trying to finds homes for cats this way.

I have phoned shelters from one end of Long Island to the other (and on both the North Fork and the South Fork) and in Manhattan too. I have spoken to most of the outfits you mention. Everyone says the same thing (no cats invited) and each of them refers me to others. It's a bit like a monkey chasing its tail. And very depressing. All the vet can recommend is putting the Lovely Miss Lily out on the street. How depressing (and depraved) is that?

What's even sadder is that, for some reason, black and dark calicos like Lily are not desirable to people looking to adopt. I don't get it

Good luck in your search. Don't give up, contact local blogs with your story and pictures. Most blogs will help to get the word out.

I recently ended up with 3 abandoned kittens and even though they were only about 10 weeks old, I had the same luck you did with each place telling me to call the other ones. Animal Kind vets on 7th Ave actually has a nice sheet with numbers for 25+ places to call. I did end up getting Sean Casey to take them, but I'm sure he wouldn't if they weren't kittens. Several years ago I got a litter of kittens (once big enough to be adopted out) plus their mother in at the ASPCA, so I'll share how it worked for me.

Nobody every called me back. I just got the intake information. There was a 2 hour window, once per week when you could show up with cats to be evaluated. If they thought they could find the cat a home, it got shots and bloodwork and was sent home with you for quarantine to make sure it didn't have any of those cat diseases like FIV. When I was there, it was basically me and a bunch of TNR folks with obviously still ferral cats. If the cat clawed or tried to meanly bite, it was immediately turned away. I knew the kittens would get in as the mother moved them into our bathroom (from a neighbor's yard) when they were a few days old so they were very social. The mother I was a bit worried about but she apparently turned on the charm and they gushed over her. Two weeks and clean blood work later, I dropped them off at the ASPCA for good.

Hello Stella,

Here are a couple more photos of Lily, taken a couple of weeks ago when she was still recovering from her spaying/neutering operation.

Yes, Lily is a cuddler! She loves nothing more than to cuddle up beside you as you watch television, sit on your lap or snuggle in the crook of your arm as you lie in bed reading. She is a real sweetie. It seems, too, that she is a true “people person”. She is great company. She is a talker; if you speak to her, she will respond. Also, she seems to want to be where you are and will follow you around your apartment.

She is a small cat, with very long legs. It seems that she may have some Siamese in her. She is very pretty!

I do hope you’ll be interested in giving Lily a home, or perhaps in fostering her while you make up your mind?
