And some folks have their heads up their butts. Considering half of the esteemed President Barack Obama's comrades are jumping ship and barry himself couldn't fill up the ballroom at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC tells me people are starting to open their eyes, some anyway. Consumer confidence is down, home buying is down, massive unemployment, more than half of the Country does not want Obamacare, and what about the tax cuts? Considering dems are delaying the vote on the Bush tax cuts till after the election, knowing they don't have enough votes, businesses are not hiring or starting up until they know what is happening. The esteemed President Barack Obama is the worst president in history. "Making the tax wallop even worse, Democrats haven't defused the Alternative Minimum Tax time-bomb either. According to Ken Kies, who once served as staff director of Congress's joint tax committee, as many as 30 million middle-class Americans could get hit with the AMT next year. "The Democrats are going to have fix this during the lame-duck session [in November], or this tax will hit a lot of Americans in January." The Tax Foundation has run the numbers and the tax hikes coming down the road are eye-popping. Take a school teacher married to a bus driver, with a combined income $120,000 and two kids. Only Nancy Pelosi would consider them "rich," but their income taxes will go up $4,499 next year, even before any potential AMT penalty, which could add several thousand dollars to their tax bill. A family of four with an income of $45,000 would pay $2,083 more in taxes. Ouch. And that hard-working single mom, who Mr. Obama talks all the time? If she makes $40,000 a year, she will pay the IRS $1,607 a year more. Republicans are set to make the tax hit a big campaign issue in the next five weeks. Eric Cantor, the Republican Whip, tells me: "Democrats have always wanted to raise these tax rates on everyone -- not just the rich. I'm not surprised how this turned out." Welcome to the Obama-Pelosi era of "shared sacrifice." -

I'm not sure which I have less faith in: a. Government knowing where to invest/spend taxes (or debt) in order to get people back to work, and our nation competitive again. OR b. Wealthy people investing/spending their untaxed earnings in a manner that gets people back to work and our nation competitive again. ....both methods are pretty Keynesian. You of course conveniently assume that rich people took the Bush Tax cuts and used it in ways that created jobs and wealth for the rest of America Only they didn't:http://www.tax.com/taxcom/taxblog.nsf/Permalink/CHAS-89LPZ9?OpenDocument » Pulitzer Prize-winner David Cay Johnston provides the data[/url] confirming what we all knew was true, but many were afraid to say out loud:
More oopsies for how to turn the United States into Oligarchy, with your host, Eggcream!Total income was $2.74 trillion less during the eight Bush years than if incomes had stayed at 2000 levels. That much additional income would have more than made up for the lack of demand that keeps us mired in the Great Recession. That would mean no need for a stimulus, although it would not have affected the last administration's interfering with market capitalism by bailing out irresponsible Wall Streeters instead of letting the market determine their fortunes. In only two years was total income up, but even when those years are combined they exceed the declines in only one of the other six years... Had incomes stayed at 2000 levels, the average taxpayer would have earned almost $21,000 more over those eight years. That's almost $50 per week.

Oopsies Part III: Rich Vote with Their Wallets to End Bush Tax Cuts. Again. And for my finale, one graphic that annihilates eggcream and the Republicans' simple-minded, ignorant and empty belief that tax cuts for the wealthy create happiness and unicorns for all of us. Turns out only the rich get the unicorns. The rest of us just get debt and unemployment.Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner recently proposed a two-step job creation plan consisting of a full extension of Bush-era tax changes and cuts to domestic spending. His plan calls on Congress to cut non-security related spending back to fiscal year 2008 levels and to enact a two-year freeze on all current tax rates. Rep. Boehner claims these two policies will drive job growth more than any proposal of President Obama’s. However, we find that this proposal would have a devastating impact on the struggling U.S. labor market while negligibly improving the fiscal outlook.

This is pretty much BS. Half the country doesn't want "Obamacare" as if there were such a thing. But far more than half want the constituent parts of it when they are explained to them. Personal income taxes do not effect business hiring. Saying businesses won't hire people because of uncertainty of the income tax is a non-sequitor. Even if there were a grain of truth to it, there is no uncertainty. Taxes will either stay as they are or go back to the level they were in 2000 .It's not uncertain. I believe I've stated on this board before that Americans are pussies when it comes to taxes. Personal and corporate tax rates are some of the lowest among industrialized nations that you would conceivably want to live in. At least 60% of the federal budget cannot be cut either because the programs are necessary or because the politics of the action are poor. -

The portion of Americans living in poverty last year rose to the highest level since 1993, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday, fresh evidence that the sluggish economic recovery has done nothing for the country’s poorest citizens.
.
.
.And in new evidence of economic distress among the middle class, real median household incomes declined by 2.3 percent in 2010 from the previous year, to $49,400. That was 7 percent less than the peak in 1999 of $53,252.
.
.According to the census figures, the median annual income for a male full-time, year-round worker in 2010 — $47,715 — was virtually unchanged from its level in 1973, when the level was $49,065, in 2010 dollars, said Sheldon H. Danziger, professor of public policy at the University of Michigan.
.
.The youngest members of households — those ages 15 to 24 — lost out the most, with their median income dropping by 9 percent. The recession continued to push Americans to double up in households with friends and relatives, especially those ages 25 to 34, a group that experienced a 25 percent increase in the period between 2007, when the recession began, and 2011. Of that group, 45.3 percent were living below the poverty line, when their parents’ incomes were not taken into account.
“We’re risking a new underclass,” said Timothy Smeeding, director of the Institute for Research and Poverty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. “Young, less educated adults, mainly men, can’t support their children and form stable families because they are jobless.”

Despite lots of work, advocates can't seem to implement higher taxes on the rich at the federal level.
Maybe they can get a "millionaires tax" implemented at the NY state level?
Advocates Respond to Poverty Data;
Cite Growing Inequality;
Call for Fair Share Tax StrategiesAdvocates and human service providers reacted strongly to new Census data showing that one in five New York City residents now live in poverty, the highest level since 2000. The latest figures, which were announced on Wednesday, show that almost 1 in 3 children in New York City were poor in 2010. Several nonprofit leaders highlighted the growing levels of income inequality in the City, noting that rising poverty coincided with continued increasing wealth for the richest New Yorkers. In response, advocates reiterated calls for a restoration of the "millionaires” tax – a temporary personal income tax surcharge on high income households.
"While City and State officials have spent years denying the extent of the poverty and inequality here, the new data leaves no doubt that poverty is soaring here, while inequality is surging," said Joel Berg, the executive director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. "The fact that 57 people now have as much money as 4 million working families is nothing short of obscene. I am still a committed capitalist but it has never been clearer that today's distorted crony capitalism needs to be reformed to once again ensure everyone who works hard and plays by the rules has a shot at the American dream. These new numbers leave no doubt we need fundamental changes in failing City and State policies in order to create pathways of upward mobility again for both middle class and lower income New Yorkers. They also further demonstrate the need for Congress to immediately pass President Obama's jobs plan."
"The recent census data about poverty in New York City is just the latest evidence of the growing income inequality in our city," stated Mark Dunlea, Executive Director of the Hunger Action Network of NYS. "We witness every day at emergency food programs the impact of the steep raise in poverty. New York City now has the greatest income inequality since right before the Great Depression - the richest 1% of New York City residents now receive 44% of the income, a share four times greater than 30 years ago. This great wealth gap is a fundamental reason for the Great Recession and unemployment crisis. The efforts of our elected officials from City Hall to the State Capitol to Congress to ignore this problem to instead focus on the relatively minor problem of the so-called deficit is a recipe for continued economic disaster.”
"New census data lay out in stark terms the impact of the economic downturn on children in New York City,” said Jennifer March-Joly, Executive Director of Citizen's Committee for Children. " Importantly, we know that early approaches to the economic crisis advanced a combination of federal stimulus funds, tax increases, and budget reductions, while recent actions taken on the local, state, and national level have focused almost exclusively on budget cuts. These reductions have compounded the negative impact of the recession and have weakened the economy and our safety net, which has put low-income households on the edge with lost jobs; declining investments in public schools, child care, and after school programs; and cuts to basic community supports. The alarming new census data demonstrates that budget cuts have moved us in the wrong direction, and demands an urgent reexamination of tax policy.”
In response, advocates called for new and balanced approaches for addressing New York City's financial challenges.
"The bad news for the neediest New Yorkers and children in particular keeps piling up,” said Richard Buery, CEO of the Children's Aid Society. "This is exactly why all New Yorkers who care about children and the poor must come together and demand that the wealthiest pay their fair share, especially now when things have gotten so bad for so many. It is time to reinstate the Personal Income Tax so that those who can afford a life of luxury contribute equitably to ensuring that an entire generation of American children is not lost. Much like the City did in the 1990s to hire additional police and combat a surge in crime, the administration should work with Albany to levy a tax on the richest City residents to help fight this generation's greatest threat—children living in poverty.”
"We need to return to a balanced approach of managing the economic crisis, in which everyone must share in the sacrifice,” said Jennifer March-Joly. " While national leaders spar over proposals to nominally increase taxes for wealthy individuals, New York State could raise $5 billion a year in much-needed revenue by simply extending the existing surcharge on personal income tax for individuals earning over $250,000 annually. These resources could be spent shoring up the critical social safety net on which an ever-increasing number of New York children and families rely. At the local level, we should also recall how City residents joined together during the recession that followed 9/11 by supporting a temporary and progressive increase in City income taxes. This temporary tax increase enabled the City to get out from under an economic downturn and to protect children and families with continued investments in essential public services.”

A millionaire tax won't do squat except chase out folks with that kind of cash to New Joisey. Get rid of the massive corporate tax breaks, crack down on nepotism and corruption and at the same time make NYC a business friendly city, especially for small operations, and you'll see money flow into the coffers. Most of all, we need to show that the taxes we pay are actually being put to common sense use. Cause for the past eight years, I ain't really seen nuthin'. NYS already has one of the highest income tax rates in the States.

- not powerful enough to get money from the rich even if they trusted the government to do good things with it.

I was going to say we need major tax reform in general. Local, state & fed wise. We, citizens, religious institutions and businesses need to pay a fair share alike. I am very conservative when it comes to the Right to Succeed or Fail, however, I have a very hard time asking those whom don't have even a meager income, to pay taxes. It's not that I believe in charity, I don't because, well, I'm a skin-flint, but asking someone who earns less than 20-30K a year in NYC to give it up is pretty petty and destructive.
"Clamato! Straight Up! No chasah! -

I don't see those earning below 30k as being able to play a role in fixing this mess. If we are going make progress on poverty and government corruption and ineptitude, we are going to have to depend on those who are better off.
