Subject: Ruby's Bar amongst others to be evicted from Coney Island

Ruby's Bar is closing as a result of not having its lease renewed. It's supposed to be out in two weeks, but people are converging there on Saturday for a protest. I'm linking to the NY Times as the paper of record, but it's pretty clear from the opening where its bias lies (with the developers). Alternately, here is Dick Zigun, executive director of Coney Island USA and the unofficial "Mayor of Coney Island":

“My heart goes out to people who have worked here all their lives. But let’s not separate Coney Island from the cruel world of New York real estate politics and the way real estate leases work under capitalism.”

Goddamn, I've had some good times in Ruby's! Thanks to the proprietors for all those years ...
      Very un- "sivilized".

They are going to have one last get-together (and protest?) this Saturday from 12:30-6:

"Ruby's Bar & Grill will be open this Saturday, Nov 6th, from around 1230- 6pm, possibly for the very last time, for a rally! There is also a petition & letter writing campaign."

Good news! Ruby's, Paul's Daughter and the other Boardwalk businesses have been fighting the eviction and were just offered a lease for this season. They will have to leave after Nov 2011. Details of the lease are being negotiated and should be announced soon.
