Building-wide examination for HPD Violations

      I just received a note from my management company saying NYC Housing inspectors are going to be coming by sometime between 9:00am-5:00pm. Pushing aside the fact that that time frame makes Cablevision seem precise, does anyone know what this is about?

      Except for a couple years, I've lived in the city my whole life and never run across this, although I also haven't before lived in such a large building. Is this routine for larger buildings? Are they just checking for violations like smoke detectors, things blocking the fire escape, and illegal walls? Does anyone know how often this is likely to happen? Does this indicate the management company might have had a number of problems in the past? Lastly, does the building manager come along too? Should I be expecting a gang of people tromping through the apartment?

      my building when i brought it had a ton of violations. i paid the buildings dept to come and clear the building of it by doing a inspection.

      he did it for all apartments except for one. I couldn't find keys for apt till at the end of inspection which he inspected but a paper i got back months later saying he couldn't get access to it because he probably forgot note he did inspect it. but i'm not going to go down to the dept and do another inspection etc.. waiting for them is tiresome.

      maybe your building had tons of old violations like mines. mines didn't have some floors or bathrooms or roof etc... feces and garbage every where.

      I like to stick it to The Man, The Man happens to be Liberal in NYC(power Structure).

      You can look up the open violations for your building by visiting nyc.gov/hpd and entering your address in the right hand column.

      Building wide inspections are not as common as individual apartment inspections. Typically, HPD comes out after an individual tenant has reported a possible violation in her apartment. HPD comes out to check if indeed there is an inspection and assign an urgency level to the violation (i.e., whether the landlord has 24 hours, 30 days or 90 days to cure the violation).

      I am guessing HPD is doing a follow up to see if previously reported violations were cured.
