this could be a lot of fun. ....but I can barely draw a stick figure.

Do we have anyone who can draw/paint?

      UPDATE:

there was a mistake on the map (it's corrected now)

      the panels are 8' x 8'

that's twice as much goodness for you to paint!!!

If you realy want to help then get Mazon to build on this site already or sell to a developer who will. This blighted "ground zero" is retarding the progress of Franklin Ave. A mural project.. It's just going to get tagged!

This mural project is patterned, in part, on a similar project done by PLG Arts last fall, on construction fences on Lincoln Road and Flatbush Avenue. THOSE mural panels weren't tagged; why should these be?

Of course we have considered the possibility of tagging, and yes we are hoping for a success similar to the PLG Arts project.

So far, even given the allure of the white primed fence, there has been a general respect for the effort, so we'll keep our finger's crossed.

In addition, this summer we have also been active in helping find a solution to developing the property.

      Is Walgreens a go?

      ...or just a hopeful rumor?

      It's neither a rumor nor a go;

There is a possibility of developing the site as a commercial building that would have a large store on the ground & 2nd floors.

There are pros & cons of bringing this type of development to Franklin Avenue and we would be interested in hearing from the community at large what people's feelings are

I saw this on Brownstoner ... it really does look like the same sort of intersection and everything. I look forward to seeing it all painted! And I also look forward to whatever gets eventually built there too.

We still have a few panels left but we also need 2 things for next weekend (9/18 & 19)

      1. volunteers to help supervise the effort: basically this will be crowd control and general assistance, a great way to meet your neighbors

      2. a person who can paint a panel for CHCA that is basically lettering

      if you can help out

      please email us at mural@crowhillcommunity.org

      thanks

it is looking GREAT! I wandered around while they were painting this afternoon and just passed it again tonight around 10:15. Looks wonderful so far, can't wait to see it all done tomorrow.

There's even a panel of Franklin Ave. at that corner. Like on it are other panels! And the skywatch tower is memorialized in it as well. Meta....

The mural is beautiful! I just moved here a couple months ago but it really makes a difference. It was so nice to see people out and painting--even the kids! Definitely a nice reminder of the people and the talent that makes this community vibrant.

      Thanks!

Is there some way of protecting the mural with some sort of varnish? That way, if someone makes effort to deface it, the defacement could be wiped off?

Unfortunately, spray paint and markers will adhere to almost anything.

.....but if you ever invent such a product, you will be a billionaire. MTA, DOE and similar organizations would paint every surface with it.

Enroute to the train station I saw two Hasidic women pointing at the mural and speaking excitedly in either Yiddish or Hebrew. One of them took out her phone and stood directly in front of the Bob Marley portion of the mural and started to take pictures of it. I was sort of blown away by this. Hasids listen to Bob Marley? It makes sense, in a weird way. After all, Rastafarians rely on the Old Testament for guidance, and they speak of Zion, and Israel too. That Hasidic Jewish guy reggae artist, Matisyahu comes to mind. 'Twas interesting to see; a typical New York moment.

are you sure they weren't excited about the Hasidic painting directly next to bob? there's a photo of the bob mural in todays amNY in an article discussing how 'hip' CH is.

I saw the mural. It says 'Moshiach', or something like that... Weirdly, didn't  notice it before.
