WHITEY
um, how about whitey and all other people with $14 who happen to like burgers and beer?

Did you not read my post? I definitely disagree. Not saying that "whitey" isn't going, but so are a LOT of other people -- and in a larger number from my few visits.
Recently I was in there and overhead several "black guys" talking to each other about their workdays. One of them was having a hard time adjusting to cubicle life ....crafting memos that are not read.
It was a pretty mixed crowd. The Amber beer was yummy. Their dining room is more comfy than Dutch Boy's
How can Whitey go here when he is confined to a federal lockup in Boston?
Harharharharhar.

Is the Roadhouse still open? It's been closed all week, or at least after nine from what I can tell.
It would not surprise me if this place was unable to survive beyond an initial six-month lease. I know nothing of their lease, profits, etc., I just know it is one of the most awkward places in the neighborhood.
Perhaps an owner/investor actually saw the place and realized it was a joke and decided to re-invent the place. That would be the best scenario.
It has been closed a lot lately, and I totally agree a relaunch would be best.
Soon to re-open under new owners!
I met the new owners tonight and they talked about how they are in the process of getting permits, and envision it becoming an American style casual dining establishment.
However, I did not get the name of the place and I did not ask them if it would be more upscale than a diner.
Their complete press release:
At the Franklin Avenue Merchants meeting last night, ILFA had the pleasure of meeting Jacques Belanger and Lev Gewirtzman, the business partners who've taken over the old Franklin Roadhouse space at 688 Franklin (pictured above). The Crown Heights residents have ample experience in restaurant world between them, and after meeting with CB8 tonight, they're aiming to be open in 5-6 months, offering American casual fare that focuses on seasonal ingredients. No word yet on what the space will look like

the part about "seasonal ingredients" makes me think this will be a nice upscale place.
Gates were up today. Don't know if that's news but there were some construction guys inside doing some work.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a name:
As per their liquor license application, Northside Tavern will feature a separate bar space with 15 seats and 50 seats at tables. 20 additional seats will be located at tables in the outdoor patio area.
The establishment will operate from Noon to Midnight on Sunday, Noon to 1 AM Tuesday and Wednesday, Noon to 2 AM on Thursday, and Noon to 4 AM Friday and Saturday. It will be closed on Mondays.
One of the two principal owners live in the community and has a vested interest in seeing economic development. Northside has stated that they expect to employ 15 people, with a preference for folks who live locally.
The establishment is billed as a seasonal American restaurant that will partner with local farms.
...For everyone's sake, I hope they don't need to have wait staff as patient as this:
I love that the press release refers to the "old Franklin Roadhouse space". (emphasis added)
This thread predates the "old" space.
Time is truly compressed.
Yup. In the present environment, businesses that do not fulfill a desire that people are willing and able to pay for, will quickly be unable to pay rent.
It's brutally efficient.
As a result of living locally, the owners of Northside Tavern may correctly perceive the area's desire to support a restaurant that offers diner at this price point, and provides this level of quality and service.
And who's burgers don't take 45 minutes to be delivered to your table, and are reminiscent of hockey pucks. Not sad to see the Roadhouse go.
going to take a visit, i shall.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It seems the owners have changed their mind about the name Northside Tavern, and are now going to call it Mayfield.
Northside Tavern may have set a new record for Franklin Ave; it closed before it even opened.
GOOD. Northside Tavern was a wack name anyway.
I have to agree that I did not quickly associate the name Northside Tavern with their image:
It was going to take a lot for me to associate a Tavern with words like:
fresh
Dining
Organic
Earth hugging
Mayfield is better.

I've heard this place is supposed to open mid-summer. Can anyone confirm?
I wish to report that I have seen contractors working in this place recently, but that the Fall season has arrived.
That is all.
Nothing ever opens anywhere near on time.
Yeah, the owners would have to look no further than the Franklin Roadhouse to see what happens when a restaurant rushes to open prematurely.
I am kinda psyched to have another sit down place coming.
I was able to look in on this place yesterday. Construction is done.
Staff is busy stocking the the place with non-perishable food stuffs and items like glasses.
Decor looks classy, upscale. Definately sit down.
Mayfield looks like it will open within the next two weeks
And in two weeks I will be there. Please live up to the expectations I built in my head
Looks like they are shooting for a soft opening on Monday.

I passed by yesterday and it looks really nice inside. I'm just hoping they have neighborhood-sensible prices to avoid falling into the Abigail's trap.
I do not think Abigails failed due to price. It believe it failed due to its customer service, the amount of time one had to wait for food, and the quality of food that finally arrived.
I think if Mayfield provides a high end dining experience with good food, people who largely share the demographics of those whom regularly eat at Barbachino (i.e. about 40 years old, financially successful people who live locally) will provide it with adequate business.
As a result of having its act together, Barbachino is busy, even on week nights. Meal, drink and tip come to around $25 pp.
Mayfield could do the same.
Monday went well, and they are to be fully open today, 10/24/2012
Did anyone go to the soft opening?
I wasn't able to make it.
As I look back on the comment I made a few days ago, I wish to add a piece on R&D.
It also caters to the "farm to table" diners, and has been full whenever I am there. It is located narby, on Vanderbilt: http://www.606vanderbiltbklyn.com/
I peeked inside to check out the menu. A few bucks more per entree than I'd like to pay, especially if I'd make it an everyday spot. More special occasion, like James.
Yes, I was anticipating that it would be in the same league as James, The Vanderbilt, or Thirst Baravin on Classon.
Whenever I dine at these places (not that often), or walk by with my dog (more often than the former), they seem to be doing a good dinner business.
...the folks who bought Abigails will likely try to compete in this segment of the market as well.
Another restaurant, Sunshine Company, will soon open on Washington Ave, near Tom's
It is owned by the folks that run Milk Bar on Vanderbilt, and will also be pursing a group of customers that seeks a high end meal, for the Farm to Table crowd.
press on Mayfield:

We tried to go for dinner last night and were told it would be an hour and a half wait. Not sure if that's just a post-hurricane bump or a sign of full embrace by the neighborhood.
They've been packed for the past couple of nights- the hurricane plus Halloween has created this insane never-ending weekend vibe around here. Crown Inn was packed to the gills.
I've never seen so much foot traffic on Franklin before- It seems like Franklin is becoming a destination location.

We went tonight, it was quite yummy and full of people.
I'd put it equal in quality, price and service to Bar Corvo, or The Vanderbilt.
...we will be back.
Update: This place is full everytime I walk by during the evening hours.
My conclusion is not only do others believe that it is good food and service, but that more restaurants of this quality will be supported by the neighborhood if (and when) they open.
I've noticed that a lot of the people I tend to meet out on Franklin Ave hail from much deeper in Crown Heights than they used to a year or two ago.
I think Franklin Ave has definitively arrived as a destination.
I would agree with that, eastbloc. I'm over by Kingston and instead of looking for restaurants in Fort Greene or Bed-Stuy, I can now just pop over to Franklin. It's like what Dekalb used to be to me back in the day -- a reliably good strip with lots of choices.
The first entity to open a sit down, table service, somewhat fancy restaurant on Nostrand will do well.
Crow Hill Bistro was the last to try it, and failed, but area is now ready.
Anyone wanna pool some money together and get this thing going?
We can firm up our plans at Festivus: http://brooklynian.com/forum/crown-heights-and-prospect-lefferts-gardens/the-8th-annual-brooklynian-festivus-friday-dec-21-2012
About 10 people have already told me they will show up. ...hopefully one of them needs a place to invest $200k.
Ate here last night finally and really enjoyed it. A bit more expensive than other fare on the ave but delicious nonetheless. Had smoked eggplant with potatoes and squash, Brussel sprouts, lady had orecchiette with pesto and pine nuts, and a friend had the BLT with fries.
My lady and I both felt hungry after our meal since the portion size wasnt huge, so we ordered dessert (much to the delight and intentions of the owners I'm sure). Overall would definitely go back but probably not at the rate that I frequent Chavela's or Barboncino , just coming down to $$$.
echo the positive reviews. was a nice little dinner. and finished with a cocktail at tooker alley.
