PLG Arts Jazz at the Inkwell
Last night a packed house was treated to a truly extraordinary evening of traditional and original Haitian sounds as PLG Arts Jazz at the Inkwell presented Vo-Duo. Inspired by the rhythms and chants of the sacred Voduo music of that country, the words quiet and powerful are not contradictions. The guitarist (Monvelyno) and percussionist (Markus) merged gentle harmonies with irresistible rhythm that became even more so when guest percussion Jean-Marie Brignol joined them onstage for one song in each of their two sets. The pair played material from their new CD "Nous La," which translates to "we are here, fighting," as Monvelyno explained, "for Haitian culture and education about the musical traditions of voduo (which translates as "to be one spirit"). The joint was jumpin' as people chanted in call-and-response, sang along, and danced, proving yet again that music is the universal language.
Mark your calendar for the next show on Thursday, Nov 8, when PLG Arts at the Inkwell is pleased to bring back the Christian Finger Band. With Pete McCann on guitar, Adam Armstrong on bass, and of course Christian on drums, this group performs sophisticated, melodic, and highly accessible jazz, classical, pop, and world music with an exceptional sound of their own.
Try the Inkwell’s new expanded menu plus soul food selections, fine wines and beers.
Join us at the Ink Well Cafe: 408 Rogers Avenue, between Sterling and Lefferts. $5 donation supports the musicians and PLG Arts!
