Neighbors have recently gotten together to clean and beautify several of Crown Heights commercial strips: Washington, Franklin and Nostrand.

      ....Kingston Ave is next.

The Kingston Avenue Merchants Association is active near the Brooklyn Children's Museum, and will host a series of beautification events, installing tree bed guards along the North end of the district.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
    2. If anyone's looking for specific dates, my understanding is that the prep work will be done Saturday April 28th and Saturday May 12th from 10 to 3, and the actual day of installation for the tree guards will be Saturday June 9th from 9 to 4. Also, I've heard of a couple of beautification events just off Kingston for It's My Park Day on May 19th. Here's the flier for the Brower Park event.

    3. OK, let's try that attachment again. Sorry.

      Dear Kingston Avenue Community:

Happy Spring! The Kingston Avenue Merchants Association (KAMA) seeks your support for a community project this spring.

In collaboration with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Project (NEP), KAMA was awarded a “Love Your Block” grant from Citizens Committee for NYC. This grant will help fund a project that aims to collaborate with neighborhood community groups to create and install tree guards along Kingston Avenue, between St. Marks and Atlantic Avenue. The project’s objective is the beautification and cleanliness of the 13 tree beds while promoting community partnerships amongst merchants and residents.

KAMA was initiated to foster a robust retail district and promote community cooperation; and has primarily focused on cleanliness, safety, and overall improved physical appearance for the district. And as we continue, this collaborative effort will be a great opportunity for growth and strengthening partnerships within the Crown Heights community.

Here are a few opportunities to join us in making this a successful project:

      · Please forward this information to your networks and email lists

We need access to power tools and painting equipment
We need resources such as pressure treated lumber, nails, screws
We need resources for tree bed plantings (plants, shrubs, bulbs, etc)
      We need volunteers for workdays*

(Bring your gardening tools and brooms and meet at 68 Kingston)

      (Saturday, April 28th and May 12th, 10am-3pm)

      Street cleaning
      Tree bed prep
      Tree bed guard fabrication
Tree bed guard installation (Saturday, June 9th, 9am-4pm)

*Added Bonus—these workdays are great opportunities to learn about street trees, tree bed guard construction and installation, etc and institute them along your residential block.

In anticipation of support from you and your community groups, we expect just as successful a day as we have had in past events. For our corporate and merchant supporters, there are marketing opportunities available in exchange for your support.

Please contact KingstonMerchants@gmail.com with your group’s commitments or with any questions or comments and join us at

68 Kingston, Saturday morning at 10am.

      Sincerely,

      James Ellis

      NEP & KAMA, Project Manager
