Just found a really nice Doberman freezing and crying outside my door. 311 isn't really of any assistance in finding his owner, so hopefully Brooklynian will be.

He's young, got a spiked collar on (no tags) wearing a gray and orange/red vest. Super well behaved, seems to like Cheerios.

Please respond if you know who lost this good guy.

      HELP!

Contact Fido. They can send an email out to lots of dog owners and their website has good info on reuniting people and pets.

      Fido:

Post to Craigslist lost and found:

Glad you found the pup and hopefully you find its owners soon!

Also, any vet's office should be able to scan the dog for a microchip that could lead to an owner.

      Are you sheltering him tonight?

....dogs often stay pretty close to home, so he indeed might be a local dog.

If you pass out flyers in the local park (Lincoln? Brower?) in the morning to people walking their dogs, they may know its owner.

....people with dogs know each other.

      hope that link works.

Yeah, if I dont hear anything he's sleeping here tonight... to the cats dismay!

      Thanks for the advice!

An update, Dobby (as we've taken to calling him) has no RFID chip. I'm making some contacts with more sources for help but if anyone out there happens to be hankering to foster this big guy, it would be a huge help. This time of year is crazy busy, and having a stray dog to look after isn't exactly what my apartment is capable of right now.

Shameless plug, while I'm at it. Everyone should come out and see A Charlie Brown Christmas at the Brooklyn Lyceum. It's a great show and you might get the chance to meet Dobby. I have nobody to watch him while I'm over there in the show!

Hmmm. Answers to the following questions may help readers (or people that readers know...) decide whether they are up to the task

does dobby get along with other dogs?
is dobbie smart enough to avoid the cats?

      is dobby house trained?

does dobby walk somewhat well on leash?

if you wanted to pick dobby up, would he let you ....or bite you?

has dobbie been trained to sit?

      does dobbie like to fetch?

OK, so far this is what I can tell:

Dobby sniffs other dogs and seems to not mind them sniffing him. Walked him past about 10 this morning at Grand Army Plaza on the way to the vet with no trouble. Not even a bark.

Dobby seems blissfully ignorant of the existance of cats, although there is one about 30 feet away right now. He's not sniffing the door or anything.

Dobby is definitely house trained. He scratched to pee about 15 minutes ago.

Dobby walks very well on a leash, although the couple miles we were doing seemed to make his pads cold (perhaps some residual frostbite from last night) so he stopped and sat and lifted his paw in the air until I rubbed it for him.

Dobby is heavy, but I wouldn't think he would mind being lifted.

Dobby definitely knows how to sit. In fact, he knows stay and "out" as well. He picked up a tumble-weave this morning that needed to go.

Haven't yet tried to fetch, although he did enjoy carrying a stick on the walk down Union Street.

send info to vets regarding this doggie. maybe they know who he is. Also this is a great time to give a plug about microchips for animals. The chips will give you info when your dog or cat cant. Whynot and Dude are major dudes!! yayyy!

sadly this is the season and economic times people get rid of pets if it, isn't a lost pet :(.

This does not sound like the typical dumped dog - he had a vest on and a pretty nice collar. If someone is willing to foster him, we would be glad to help with free walks during the day if it helps.

Putting up posters may also be helpful, just in case the person that lost him does not have access to internet.

Good luck. He is a lucky guy that someone was willing to take him in.

This dog (real name Mello) has been reunited with his owner.

      As per the OP:

      Mystery Solved!

The dog (Mello) was playing with his owner at a tennis court but managed to slip out of the fence. In the process, his tags became disconnected from him collar and off he went. His owner was a really nice guy and Mello recognized him immediately... great to see him get so excited to be reunited with his owner. His owner, (name witheld by whynot), was very appreciative for everyones help. Turns out his girlfriend saw the posting on the FIDO site and tracked me down that way.

Thanks again for the help with all of this... great to see the results of combined online efforts!

I had nothing to do with the dog's return to its owner.

See above re: the GF of the owner saw Mello's mug shot on Fido.

The OP should let Fido know what happened. There have been a lot of lost dogs posted there lately and those of us who get the emails or check the website love to hear good outcomes like this one.

opossumQueen, I can't access Fido website from work.

....but you should feel free to tell them the good news.

Having solved this problem, the OP may have moved on.

I mentioned microchipping to Shawn, Mellos owner. Now, its up to him to actually do it. Thanks again to everyone for all your help. I doubt Mello would be home and happy as soon as he was if it weren't for everyones concern and generosity!

Pretty cool way to end the week!
