Just wanted to share my absolute happiness so far in moving into Crown Heights. Was away in Ghana for most of the summer where you have to greet folks hello, good morning (aka be friendly and respectful...) and when I get back to NYC from Ghana I always have trouble because I automatically do this for my first week back and people give me weird looks on the subway, street, etc...

But, it's the standard here. Walking down the street and getting a 'Welcome to the Neighborhood' is the best feeling ever.

My friends who came over last night even remarked how they loved the spirit.

Feels good to live in a community.

      welcome to the neighborhood!

i know what you mean about the weird looks -- the time i was out of the south on my own, i was in pittsburgh for the summer in high school. one day, i sat in the park, at a place where cars passed, and as was the habit of home, i waved to each one. people stopped to ask directions, people asked if the city had hired me, etc -- i had no idea this was unusual.

it's still as nothing to the looks i got when back in the city after time in bear country, where i had gotten in the habit of crying out every minute or two so as not to startle a bear. people don't understand why you'd "whoop!" when coming around the corner into the office copy room at work, but you can't be too careful....

When I moved here from PS I had to make a conscious effort to break out of my shell, so to speak. In PS I got used to walking around noticing the people around me but not interacting with them. In CH people will actually talk to you, say good morning, have a good day, etc... I wasn't used to that so it took me a little while to get used to looking at people in the face instead of out of the corner of my eye. I've talked to more of my neighbors here since last November then I did in the 10 years I lived in PS. I love getting to know the people here and saying hello to the church ladies or people living up the block working in their garden. It feels like more of a community. If you happen to see a chubby whitish (I've got a bit of a tan now!) woman with medium length blue/purple hair walking a brown shepherd mix and a black pitbull, that's me. Say hello if you want and welcome to the neighborhood!

sweet tea, that's hysterical! Stephen Colbert has forever tied bears to him in my mind, I always hear his voice saying Bears!
      Go do something useful.

I have to agree, I've had more people say hello and good morning to me in my two months in Crown Heights than I did in five years in Prospect Heights. At first I thought maybe it was just that I stood out as a white woman (which I suppose is partly it), but I'm coming to find that it's a genuine friendliness to the neighborhood. Thanks neighbors!

As for the guy who commented on my legs this morning, that wasn't really necessary, but I suppose on some level even that kind of "friendliness" is validating albeit a little unnerving.

Heh. Yesterday I was cleaning my old apartment (and let me tell you the air is MUCH cleaner here than in Astoria. Yuck!) and I came back home filthy and covered in dust. I went to Imhotep's to pick up some dinner on the way home and some guy came up to me and asked me if I had a cold because I was coughing so much. I just told him that I had been breathing dust all day. "Well, then," he said, "you ought to drink some milk and honey, and that will bring it all up."

Well, actually, that would probably have made it *worse*, but the thought was real sweet.

Well, if she was super cute than it was me! haha - kidding. I've only been to Soda once and I hung basically with one person. But, glad to hear there are other Ghana lovers there because now that I'm in the neighborhood I hope to hang out there more now! =)
