The parade is usually on Labor Day, that Monday. This year, that's Sep 3.

If I remember correctly tho, the partying and blocked off streets start a few days before the actual parade, right?

I'm guessing that E.P. will be congested or blocked off from Friday thru Monday. When do they start putting out the food vendors along EP and fencing off streets?

Things get started that Friday night (behind the museum- the costume contest), but not on the Parkway until the day before (Sunday night). Street doesn't actually get blocked off until the morning of. Move the cars on Sunday. Street opens back up Monday (Labor Day) 6pm sharp.

      Thursday- she should be fine.

Subject: West Indies Day Parade Street Closure Question

I will need to get to JFK at roughly 9 pm the night before the Labor Day Parade. Does anyone recall from previous years at what time Eastern Parkway is closed? I need to know if I can get a car at that hour or if I'll need to hit the A train / have the car pick me up elsewhere (Park Slope).

      Thanks.

EDIT: Just actually found a listing of closures from last year that indicate EP is open until 9am the day of the parade. Does this sound right? I seem to recall having issues taking a cab home from the city the night before in a previous year.

i think there is a parade on the part of flatbush between the park and garden on the night before -- maybe that's what you're remembering?

I walked up Eastern Pkwy last year the night before-- at about 1am. The vendors were beginnng to set up but I'm 90% sure Eastern Pkwy was open to traffic.

Living on EP as I have for the last 10 years, I don't recall them closing it to traffic until the morning of the parade. I think you'll be fine.

Getting back the next night, however, is a whole other problem!

You're TOTALLY fine the night before. Vendors setting up at night-EP wide open. Even the next morning you'll be ok till I'd say 9- 10am. Parade hits the museum PROMPTLY at noon.

Here's the website to get all the info on the parade.
