According to I Love Franklin Avenue:

" Crosby Coffee at Bergen and Classon is getting close to opening. Their high ceilings and big windows give the place an airy feel, and they'll be serving Caffe Vita roasts made to order with a Synesso pressure profiling machine (coffee aficionados tell ILFA this is impressive stuff, and not found at most Brooklyn coffee shops). They'll also be taking credit cards for any purchase (even a single cup of joe to go). The shop is named in honor of Crosby Gaige, the legendary chef and cocktail-recipe-compiler who wrote the 1939 New York World's Fair Cookbook, from which some recipes will be borrowed (the World's Fair connection also inspired their elephant theme). "

Crosby is open! Nice people who serve good coffee. They plan on opening early in hopes of picking up some commuter cash for those in need of a cup of joe on the way to the subway. Also plan on providing pre-pared foods including some kind of boxed lunches to go in the future.

That looks great! Looks like a lot of seating too, I'll have to walk up and check it out this weekend. Thanks for the pics.

      It is at 667 Classon.

...I don't drink coffee, but it looks nice in there.

I could've sworn that address was the bodega on the corner of Classon and Bergen, which is still a bodega and not a coffee shop. I'll have to do more snooping. #lookalivefail.

      I do.

'Our' neighborhood is overtaking us. We are like the indigen-peoples of this land now known as the United States of America -- the original pre-gentrified folk.

What I mean is, when the Europeans came they brought their cattle with them, and when the sheep, pigs, chicken and cows came off the ships and defecated on the land, the seeds of the feed they consumed on the way to the 'New World' began to grow here. And it grew with wild abandon.

European vegetation was so successful that it crowded out native fauna. In essence, the folks who were here before the European's arrival saw the very earth change around them. And, in a sense, that's what we are enduring: Everything is changing around us. And with that come a new group of folk who take advantage of these changes; their advantage seems to me mostly our dis-advantage. Your home thinly veneered with a coat of paint and a few fancy doodads is now worth twice as much. Unfortunately you don't get paid twice as much.

Believe me, I feel this pain. At the end of every month the moving trucks that come and go is testament to this change. It's hard to have your life affected in ways that diminishes its quality and think that this is a great thing; coffee be damned. The only way to slow it down is to stop patronizing some of these places. The less money they make, the less money prospectors will think they can make.

I had a cup of bodega coffee the other day and it was delicious.

I got the address from the photo of their window above.

MHA, how about mammals? How dare they displace the dinosaurs? They were here first!

You can keep stomping around and ignoring the furry little guys, but they'll just prey on your eggs and sooner or later you'll be extinct.

      And so it goes.

According to their Facebook page, the entrance is on Bergen Street. Maybe it's not visible from Classon.

MHA, you are one of the few people on this board I would like to know in real life (not counting the friends here I already have, you know who you are and I love you).

The building where the coffee shop is located is one story with an alley next to it, people used to go in that alley and do drugs, have sex, drink. We saw the cats living there and needed a place to feed and trap them so we put a lock on it and cleaned it up. It wasn't easy, we carted off tons of garbage, needles, other disgusting things. We kept it clean, put shelters and feeding stations back there, shoveled in winter, constantly threw out more needles and beer bottles. Got the feral cat population there under control, never had flies or roaches or rats, just slugs from the rain and mosquitoes. We sprayed for fleas to get rid of them and treated the cats with revolution. The people on the block supported us and would leave cat food there some times, they liked not having the rats around.

No one cared about this place until it was cleaned up, then they saw dollar signs. They didn't contribute to making that block better for anyone, they're just going to benefit from it. I will never give this place my money.

      Go do something useful.

So after you invested time and money to gentrify the drug users and rats out of the lot the crosby crew came along and gentrified the cat colonists out? How ironic.

I wonder what business will replace Crosby.

Eventually the owners will retire, go out of business, win the lottery, move to Florida, decide to make it a hamburger joint, or something.

Perhaps a pet store or grooming salon, to continue the cycle.

I suspect that only a small percentage of people in a given neighborhood need to patronize a business for it to be viable.

A loyal base of 100 customers might be all this place requires.

you do realize that, as a white woman, MHA doesn't want you in this neighborhood, right? just making sure you know his deal. you're part of the problem.

also, ever think their presence will make the block even better than you've already made it?

This location [667 Classon] is in the process of applying for a Beer and Wine permit with the SLA, under the name Jem Provisions, Inc.

I'm not sure whether that means that Crosby is pursuing said lic, or whether some other entity is considering buying Crosby and doing the advance work Re: whether they could get said lic.

I will find out for sure after a friend of mine attends this meeeting:

Monday, May 6, 2013 at 7:00 PM at CNR-Center Light Health Care Center, which is located at 727 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (between Park and Prospect Places).
