Hi, I'm moving from the corner of Church Ave, and Ocean Ave to Classon btwn Sterling and St. Johns. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to what to expect on this block and in the general area. Also of some things like good grocery shopping, laundry, and the overall vibe of the block. Anyone try the Glass Shop Cafe over there?
-
hey! Glass shop is good - I prefer Sip & Wonder on Washington though. Abigails is on that block too and it is good food, nice menu - but the waitstaff is very hit or miss. You're one block (Franklin and St. Johns) to Franklin Park which is a good bar which has DJs on weekends and a good tap selection. Further north from you on Classon (at Park) is Chavellas - which is awesome Mexican food. Also at Park and Classon is a new skateboard/flower shop. For grocery stores, I'd recommend the Keyfood at Washington and St. Johns or Fishers at Franklin and Lincoln. I used to do laundry on Franklin at St. Johns - it's 24 hours which is nice. Franklin Ave has a lot of good food places as does Washington. Both have good bars now too. Definitely hit Tom's for brunch on a Saturday on Washington.

(also, you may want to know, you're *technically* in Crown Heights)

expect a very now "gentrified" area, lots of kids, people outside etc, etc (I pass it on my way home every day)....glass shop coffee is good, ambience is hip, wifi etc....., heard there are condos on the same block, is that where you will be moving? -
Thanks for the reply... I've heard about Tom's. I'll definitely have to eat there. Sounds like there is a decent amount of restaraunts, a close laundrymat, and shopping. I hear so many contradicting opinions on where crown heights ends, as well as different maps that contradict themselves as well. From the small amountoftime I've spent walking around up there, it seems a lot quieter than where I'm currently living.

mspaige: Yeah there is a decent sized glass condo near the place we're to moving into, but I'm quite a few years away from living the condo lifestyle. I'm basically looking for a diverse location without hipsters and a lot of gang activity (there were several shootings in front of my current building this week) One of wich I witnessed.
-
horrifying, but unfortunately that could have happened in any part of brooklyn and im sry you had to witness that...Ive been living in many parts of bk all my life, which is why I say that, but I can honestly say I love living in what is now known as PH, it was Crown Heights for many, many years. The changes are nice and have been welcomed by the residents, and the fact that the BMA, The botanical garden, library are hot places now, there will be something about PH that you will like very much, putting aside terrible things that are happening around everyone. Good Luck!

Wondering if you're moving into #774? I just moved out of there and let me tell you, the landlords and neighbors are the worst. I can provide more information if you're interested. Basically, if you have any chance to back out, take it!
-
nothing worse than gangs and hipsters. gangs can ruin a neighborhood, but let me tell you, young professional people will KILL it. that block is very nice. you will like it.
-
Jay B: Not saying that I am moving into that particular building but I'm also not saying that I'm not... Please elaborate on the landlord (who seems okay at this point) and the neighbors.
-
Let's see, there's a lot to list here. Beginning with the landlord, they operate under two names which is just shady. They are totally unresponsive to problems with the building. The super lives offsite and is not very good at what he does. There are several HPD complaints from tenants in the building, which you can find by searching the Property Shark website (www.propertyshark.com). One of the most alarming complaints listed is that of bedbugs on the second floor. My apartment in particular had several code violations such as water damage in the ceiling, peeling paint, illegal bathroom, all of which the landlords knew about and did nothing to address. There is never hot water in the morning. In winter, the heat periodically goes out for days at a time and usually the hot water doesn't work during these periods as well. Calls to the super about these issues usually do nothing other than generate attitude on his part. My apartment also went through two periods of roach infestation within the one year I lived there. I had to duct tape the baseboards around the entire perimeter of my apartment for it to stop. On to the neighbors: a search of my posts on this website will reveal the problems I had with them. There's a drug dealer on the 4th floor who deals in the hallway. He and his friends like to congregate in the hallway on the first floor at all hours of the night and smoke weed (though I don't think weed is what he sells). They make a ton of noise, and the hallway echoes so you cannot sleep. I've had to call 911 on them several times, and the problem ALWAYS returns after a few days of peace. The second floor residents use the hallway as if it's part of their apartment, meaning the family hangs out in the hallway, sets up chairs, smokes cigarettes, and exhibit total disregard for anyone else living in the building. They have several children who are incredibly loud, though it's the adults who are the real problem. They've also flooded their bathroom a couple of times, which led to brown stains on my ceiling (water damage mentioned above) and nasty brown water dripping from the ceiling in the bathroom. They litter the building hallway with chicken bones, Cheetos bags, and Budweiser tall cans. I could go on, but I think you get the point. There's a private message feature on this board, which you can message me on if you'd like more specific information. Good luck!

wow Jay B, you sure talk reckless without knowing if those same neighbors actually know that its you lodging all these complaints, as well as the landlords. That may be a reason why you never got your issues addressed, the landlords, more than half the times dont care because they arent on site. oh btw, this section of brooklyn IS the ghetto, and maybe your just one of the many who never fit in. Do you actually have proof that there is a drug dealer in that building? things like that sb reported only if theres proof, and i say that bc of the children you mentioned that live in the building.
-
I moved. And I'm not reckless, I am stating facts. And your post makes no sense, except for one thing - this building is most definitely ghetto.
-
listen, dont take any of this nonsense posting to heart, you didnt fit in and this is why. u absolutely make NO SENSE, maybe it was better for you to get out, from all of your other posts, youre just a complaining , unhappy person. [personal attack redacted]

What about JayB's post didn't make sense? Please cut out the personal attacks. -
no personal attack, like i said if you dont like an area thats ghetto, and that could be anywhere, MOVE, and move on without attacking people
-
People who live in ghetto dumps are usually unhappy, unless they're the people who make the place a ghetto dump. Enjoy your ghetto, I'm happy to be gone.
-

JayB did move, and was warning another poster who came here asking for information, specifically asking JayB to elaborate about his/her problems with that building. -
stop attacking the drug dealers! it's not right!
-
"I'm basically looking for a diverse location without hipsters and a lot of gang activity" If you don't like hipsters or gangs, you should not be moving to this area, because there are both. In fact, there's not many parts of brooklyn from here to the east river that don't have at least one of the two in spades.
-
what's wrong with hipsters in terms of how they affect a neighborhood? i understand if they annoy people personally, but i don't understand coupling gangs and hipsters.
-
and yes, if you saw me on the street, you would probably call me a hipster
-
...please refrain from drinking PBR while riding a single speed bike, that's all I ask.For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
haha no bike riding for me and i switched to KEYSTONE
-

Forget hipsters. You really gotta watch out for the gutter punks and heroin-hobos.
I love the news.

whynot_31 » ...please refrain from drinking PBR while riding a single speed bike, that's all I ask.
aw don't knock the single speed... it makes the bike a lot lighter and much easier to carry up a few flights of stairs. now if you are talking about fixies then that's a much different story... -
damn, I meant to write fixies! next time I'll get it right. My day would be complete if I could see a "Alma Realty: Hipsters Welcome" sign. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.
-
Nobody can really define a hipster but I do remember this from around 10 years ago: http://www.catbirdseat.org/catbirdseat/bingo.html Just that fact alone probably makes me a "grandpa"

The city has the final say and it's still considered Crown Heights. REs and people wanting to be hip can call it what they want, but if you have to deal with the city gov they're calling it CH (I've done research for a city agency on demographics of the area). Regardless, hope you enjoy your new place and you don't encounter too many problems. I can attest to having sketchy neighbors in the best and worst of neighborhoods, so good luck. -
http://www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/html/home/home.shtml Go to this link to search for the violations in this or any building. You enter the building's borough and address on the left hand side. And while I've made my feelings clear about this specific building, the surrounding area is not so bad. There are good restaurants nearby, the subway service is great, and good bars are opening on Washington. The neighborhood did not make me move, but my experiences with my landlords and immediate neighbors did.

Yea, the city says lots of things and we must obey them all without question. Welcome to Prospect Heights!
