Does anyone know anything about myspacenyc, the rental company? I found an apartment that seems really nice that is being rented through them, but I can't find any info about the rental company online. I would love to not get scammed when renting a place. So if you've heard anything or worked with them, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

When I was looking for places they showed me some. They engaged in some things I found distasteful. They showed me a small, dark apartment in a dirty, dark building, a ways from a train station in a not great area that was too much money for all that. I called bullshit on the fact that they were calling it a Great Deal. When I was interested in seeing another place the realtor kept going on about how it was going to get rented any moment and since I wasn't looking to move in right away it wouldn't be worth it for me to look at. It appeared that she was intentionally steering me away and refusing to show it to me. And this amazing place that was going to be rented so fast was still vacant and showing in ads well after I signed a lease somewhere else. Which could mean she had a bait and switch apartment deal going on too.
But yeah, if you found a place and you like it and the price seems like something you could spend, go for it. I think it's unlikely you would lose out on deposits for example. They're unlikely to be shady in that way. It might be worth looking at other realtors who might be showing the same location at a lesser price. If it's a rent stabilized place you want the starting rent to be as low as possible even if after one year the price would be the same with a broker. Because when the rent goes up, say, 3% you want that math done on the smallest numbers. No Fee, but slightly higher rent rarely is in your favor in the long haul unless posted by landlord.

I have never dealt with MySpace but have dealt with Lang Realty who I did not like. Also have heard negative things about Rapid.
I rented my current apartment from JWasser who I absolutely loved. They were great to deal with, have great rental prices, trustworthy etc. I saw my apt while there was still no molding, no oven, fridge or toilet and basically had to hope and pray they'd do it right, and they did. Super happy where I am (park & rogers) and had a great experience. Landlord is fantastic, approachable, and gave me all his contact info. I'm not related to that company in any way but was just super happy to land an apt with a trustworthy company.
Here's a link of their listings:

MySpace is a shady company, not good to deal with. There are much better options. Feel free to stop into LaunchPad (http://brooklynlaunchpad.org), I'll be happy to give you some helpful info.
