When I walked by there last night, it seems construction is almost done, and it will soon open.
This is on the grounds of the former hospital.

SHILL!
Oh wait...
Yeah, I saw that they took the boards down the other day. Looks like there's going to be an elevated seating area, probably with plants shielding the patrons from the traffic on the Classon freeway.
edited to add - wife hears that it's going to be Greek, but I don't know what her source is.
the rumor you are spreading on behalf of your wife goes nicely with the rumor I have heard:
It may be called "Neptune".
If I remember correctly, the teacher talked about Neptune in the section on Greek gods.
Wife says that her source says they are related to these folks - http://www.yelp.com/biz/neptune-diner-astoria
Oh, and Neptune is from Roman mythology, Poseidon was the Greek god...
....holy coincidence Batman!
We could be on to something!
a. Astoria has a lot of Greek people.
b. That diner is also called Neptune.
c. That diner serves Greek food

Before we get too crazy, we should have richard weigh in.
So true.
But, fear not, I am not capable of blind faith.
For example, I am not spreading the rumor that it will be called "Classon Dim Sum Palace", despite wanting a yummy dim sum palace near me.
...nor have I stated that Deng Xiaoping wanted a diner on Classon as result of his embrace of cultural reform.
Nor have I focused on the Diner's orientation toward the Forbidden City (just take some 'shrooms, stand on the roof, and it is clear as day)

such statements would have no factual basis what-so-ever, and be transparently false.
...and I want this thread to stay on topic! This is a thread about the new diner on St. Marks and Classon, damn it.
That would be bad to have two Greek places in the immediate nabe. Thumbs down!
WCW-
If I were Teddy's, I would lower the lighting and become a bar with Greek food.
The garden is under utilized, and I think it could give Washington Commons some competition.
The new (Greek?) diner will have a built in customer base in the hospital, while Teddy continues to struggle to attract a much older demographic on Eastern pkwy. Look to the young, Teddy. Sell lots of beer. (theory, of course)
It's all a Greek conspiracy: the owner of Alma Realty is Steve Valiotis, a native of Sparta Greece. Greece Uber Alles!
The owner of the proposed diner presented at the CB 8 Economic Development Committee on May 10th. He was applying for a beer and wine license. Apparently his other diner in Astoria has been there some 20 years. I'd bet he's figured out how to cook a good moussaka by now!
When I lived in Astoria a decade ago, we used to hit up Neptune. Decent burger, nice breakfast and a menu as long as a phone book. And they were open all night long, to satisfy any intoxicated craving.
this place will do well

Hmm, interesting point. Hopefully, there will enough business for both. Because Teddy's is a lil' more of a hike for me, if I like the new Greek Restaurant more, that may be my "Greek" spot.
When I'm in the general mood for Mediterranean food, I usually bypass Teddy's and end up walking 2 more blocks to Zaytoon's - where I like the food much better!
Teddy's customer service is super friendly.., but sorry to say I'm not overly impressed with the food.

Agree! But it will be nice to have a breakfast served so close to home at the new place.
I wonder how late it will be open...
Interestingly, the Greek diner in Park Slope on 7th Avenue and 6th Street closed awhile ago. Too many trendy bistos not to mention Purity, a 24 hour diner, one block away.
I'm with Mr. Met, if this place can crank out a good dinner for $14, I think it will do well.
Unlike the Slope, Western CH (aka "Crow Hill" or "FauxPro") is not over saturated with "casual dining" places with table service.
...all it has so far is Chavellas, Island Thyme, Dutch Boy and Roadhouse. I think the neighborhood can support a few more.
Grecian Corner, the former "Greek diner" in Park Slope, offered just a few Greek dishes. It was really more of a diner than a restaurant.
Park Slope now has two Greek restaurants, Athena on 6th Avenue and Okeanos on 7th Avenue.
It is going to be Neptune diner. I called the restaurant in Astoria to confirm. Hopefully they cook up some good food!
Whoa!

thanks
Who did you think my wife's source was?
um, I can't say I wondered about your wife's sources.
...but I understand that wives sometimes gain knowledge from their husbands.
(Mrs Whynot states this has never happened to her)

Sometimes you can learn more from mistakes - surely he's offered plenty of opportunities of that sort?

Whyfi, you are so correct regarding learning via correction. At least when he is wrong, I usually know it and don't repeat his wrongness. My Mom once fell for a tall tale my father told and repeated it often at a party. It became family lore.
By the way, my Mom taught me the difference between Greek and Roman deities.
But I must disagree about your post directly above. I mean there has to be a reason. And it is not his exacting knowledge of things he should have learned in school, had he been listening.
My Whynot is posting an "off topic" emoticon? Really?
I dont know if I should start another thread but... There is also going to be a bagel place on st. marks, 1 door east of Franklin Ave, that will have outdoor eating and wi-fi AND they will be making their own bagels!!! 2 months till opening. Talked to the guy yesterday. Whee! New place for breakfast and bagels and more outside space.
what kind of diner is Neptune?
the $6.50 for eggs and ham and potatoes kind?
i hope so.
Urban Spoon states this is the menu for their Astoria location
