Does anyone have any news on the horrible accident that happened on Eastern Parkway at Franklin? Allegedly a young lady stumbled into traffic on the parkway and was struck by a car. The driver stayed on the scene and the woman was transported in grave condition. This all took place sometime in the wee hours of the morning.

I wouldn't be concerned if this were a rare occurrence, but we know that the more bars an area gets the more drunk people we have stumbling home.

How sad. I love that intersection but cars fly by at breakneck speed.

The speed limit should be toned down to 20mph and gravely enforced. The way the lights are synched, drivers are always jack rabbiting from the green, only to apply heavy brakes, or speed through the yellow anyway.

Honestly, I find it hard to say that EP is unsafe for pedestrians. I see far more walkers breaking the law by stepping out into oncoming traffic or by playing frogger across the five lanes of traffic than I do people running reds on that street.

If you walk out into oncoming traffic, there is the chance you'll get hit. One night I even saw a drunk guy lay down in the middle of the intersection at EP and Nostrand in front of oncoming traffic. Fortunately, pedestrians waved cars to warn them, but really, if you are going to be drunk in the street, you kind of have to expect that you might get hit.

I agree. I just had this conversation with my wife last night -- it's true that drivers in New York drive fast and run reds, but it's also true that there are relatively few incidents with pedestrians. People are largely used to it, and know what to expect.

That's why enforcement is light. The impact (no pun intended) of the problem is just not very high.

There was a period over several weeks where two cars ran up on the sidewalk at Eastern and Nostrand. One took out a bench and the other hit the railing. Cars from flying down the hill at over 50 mph and the lights are times where it's nearly impossible to make it from Rogers.
In both of these instances, many people could have been killed or injured if this happened right after the 3 train arrived and people were on the sidewalk or any child in a stroller would have been obliterated.

Eastbloc, car on pedestrian deaths is one of the leading cause of death in NYC for younger people (more likely to die this way than being shot).

If this is true, I wonder why there is such heavy handed policing with policies like stop and frisk or is there something in how traffic laws are enforced that prevent any police officer from pulling over a speeding driver and citing them?

Maybe EP isn't necessarily "dangerous" but it is certainly obnoxious to walk along, because these lovely footpaths along the center islands often don't have traffic controls at the intersections. So if you are on one of the center islands at Rogers, say, and want to continue along the footpath along the other side, a car making a turn from what feels like almost any direction could come and want to occupy your space at any moment. There are a couple places where the southern islands have official crosswalks, but generally the uncontrolled intersection is an annoyance on every block. That, combined with the noise and exhaust from the cars speeding along EP, makes me prefer to use Lincoln Pl or Union when I need to travel E/W for any distance.

And yes yes yes you must be vigilant and pay attention when crossing streets anywhere in NYC, yada yada, but the situation along EP, which is trying to be a nice promenade, is particularly annoying.

This exactly. It can become really hair-raising at times. Pedestrians don't even have the right of way because when cars need to turn off EP and go up Rogers or the service road, they need to get off EP fast to prevent getting hit by the other speeding cars on the avenue.

Maybe the problem at Franklin is the drunks, but past that, the speeding cars are a HUGE problem. Just yesterday around 5pm, there was a three car incident at Nostrand. Do the cars speed up after Franklin?
