Anonymous » If the meetings that you are refering to are the precinct council meeting, they are the 2nd Monday of every month. I always post the meeting locations and times on here but not too many people respond. Also Community Board 8 is the official one for the 77th precinct and I post those meetings as well.

Guest - I am not sure if you are a regular who attends these meeting but I did attend one and it really was informative but it put me off how much time is wasted with the bs of the guy who runs it (sorry his name escapes me) and nothing against religion but I dont think that I need to pray for 20 minutes when I attend one of these meetings. I had to leave before the last one was even over because it was almost 10:00 and like a lot of people in the community I have a child I have to get home to. Now that I have said that I will attend the next meeting and see how if it runs as long as the other

Please don't stop posting the meetings though

Well, I am a regular at the meeting and I do agree with you, Mr. Caldwell needs to keep the BS out of the meetings. This is exactly why I encourage new people to come to the meetings. During an election year you need to attend 3 or more meetings and you can run against him and/or vote him out.

Thanks for that tip - I will definitely make it to the next meeting, unfortunately I am no politician (love to help out though) but are there others who plan on running against him. I would love to meet them. Thanks again and hopefully I can meet you on May 8.

Are you for real?!? Are these community board meetings? Why are people praying at community board meetings? I don't understand.

I have never heard praying at the Community Board Meeting. At the Precinct Council Meetings they pray all the time. Mr. James Caldwell prays at all of his meetings and talks about his triple, quadruple bipass surgery that he and his wife had. Its a total waste of time but people in the community seem to be too scared to vote him out.

Hmmmm. . . I am unfamiliar with Precinct Councils.

What exactly are they-- I am assuming they are a community group that works with the police in our precinct?

I must say I find it kind of offensive and am concerned that their would be prayer at a meeting of this sort.

Precinct councils are based at each precinct. They are a way for the community to talk directly to the police about policing issues. They are also forums for the precinct and community to come together to provide programs and services such as the police athletic leagues, the police explorers clubs, auxiliary police, etc.

I'm not involved in the council here, but used to occasionally attend meetings when I lived in the 79th. As someone mentioned before, the councils are only as good as the folks that are involved. I never saw any proselytizing, but like I said, I've never been to the 77th.

Generally, I wouldn't be too concerned about the praying thing. In my experience it was more of a "lets bow our heads" as a way to end the meeting. I think that it happens sometimes because there are often ministers, rabbis, imams, etc from local churches who attend the meetings and they are asked to give a blessing. I don't think the cops ever initiated it, and it was more of a way for them to respect the different cultures of the community.

Sorry Homeowner when I went it was a Christian prayer and not a lets bow our heads or even followed with a prayer of another religion and I felt it was totally uncalled for. A "lets bow our heads" type or moment of silence/reflection is all that is needed.

I've often experienced a spiritual/religious orientation in the African-American community than is unusual in the more mainstream culture. Given that Mr. Caldwell comes from the Crown Heights community, I'm not surprised that he begins meetings with a prayer. I've been to several condo meetings in Crown Heights that began and ended with a prayer.

I personally find a prayer helps us appreciate that there is a lot that we don't have control over here and sets a tone of respect often lacking in a lot of pubic meetings.
