Our building has been talking about having a party, since we just got some newbies...but if you wanna make it the whole block, I'm sure we're in.

      hey neighbors.

you know there is already a block party on prospect place between franklin and bedford. its been going on for two years at least.

there also might already be a block assoc. on that block. a lot of the home owners on that block are older and take very good care of their property.

maybe you can join forces and expand the party?

Good stuff! Any idea of who we would want to contact? i'm sure that if you could point out person, we could ferret out the ringleader!!!

i live the next block over, so i have only noticed the party when passing through. But the neighbors are very friendly- i'm sure if you talked to someone out on their stoop they would be happy to oblige. and next time i am on the block i'll see what i can find out.

and come to think of it -- there may even be a sign posted on the block about the block assoc.

I came home yesterday to see a sign posted on my front door about the block assoc. There's a meeting tomorrow (9/2) at 7pm in front of 486 Prospect, I believe.

      it's today!

My wife and I are planning on going. It'll be right across the street from us, so unless one of us is enexpectedly chained to our desks this afternoon, we won't have much of an excuse for missing out.

The block assoc is only for the block between Classon and Grand, with a little spillover here and there. I got to the meeting a little late, but it seemed to be the first meeting that they'd had in several months. The purpose of that particular meeting was mostly to plan the block party ("let's do something fun for the kids") and to set up future meetings. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the October meeting, but I'm going to make a point of being there in Nov.

nybt, we meet again on this thread! I am thinking of moving to this block. Have been visiting after work as often as possible to get a feel for the neighborhood. My husband also feels that he would worry about me walking alone late at night. I am a little worried about the walk from the 2,3 and am thinking of only taking the Shuttle. Also fee silly about thinking that, as it seems pretty safe to me. How are you enjoying the neighborhood?

oh! do we know each other then?! Or are you the guest on the other thread, too?!

Guest » I am a little worried about the walk from the 2,3 and am thinking of only taking the Shuttle. Also fee silly about thinking that, as it seems pretty safe to me. How are you enjoying the neighborhood?

The good thing about the walk from the 2/3 (and I'm assuming that you're talking about the Eastern/Bk Museum station) is that Washington usually has enough people milling about that it's unlikely that anything too bad would happen... we usually take the shuttle just because it's a shorter walk... that'll be important when the snow starts falling!

What side of the block are you thinking about?! Maybe you're thinking about my building!!!

Yes, I am the "Guest" from the other post. I am thinking about the newer building on the north side of the block. Is that yours?

You should register a user name. It would allow us to discuss specifics in a PM (don't want everybody up in my business!).

the shuttle is really convenient once you know the schedule (there are timetables available in the stations).. during the week, it usually runs every 10 minutes for each direction.

for example, i live at the park place stop, so if i see a shuttle going north (toward the C) then 5 min later there'll be one going south (toward the park), and 5 min after that, one going north again.

on the weekends/late nights, it runs a little less often, but still pretty regularly.

at any rate, it's especially useful during bad weather
just follow your heart. that's what i do.

Do you think if some of the Ratner stadium housing makes it's way to the east side of Washington Ave. it will hurt or help property values? In case you haven't read, there is a new proposal to put 1/3 of the housing with the stadium around Bergen/Grand. I know it might feel like a new glisty building is better than another Grand Ave. chopshop, but what about a sudden glut. Will values FALL?

Exactly. The real estate market is not the stock market. Stagnation, I think, is the worst case scenario. If you're worried about your own property value, ask yourself how long you're going to be there. If there is a 'soft patch' in the market, 5-6 years is long enough to last the cycle and ensure a return.

My particular feelings on the this neighborhood in particular are positive, though.

      Guest,

Do you have any links to this proposal? I saw mention of it once but no real details.

Anyway, to me the issue is what type of housing. If they try and take all the low income housing and put it in one development on Bergen and Grand I don't think it will be too much of a positive for the immediate neighborhood. If, however, the mix of market rate and affordable housing is maintained at the same level as the rest of the development I think it will be very positive for the area.

I wouldn't worry about a glut, there is a very strong demand for housing and it's going to take some time before it is satisfied.

Property values fell in the 70s. If the economic climate gets bad enough, it's not inconceivable that they could fall again. Real estate is a pretty safe investment in New York if you're sure you're willing to stay long enough to weather a downturn, but there are no guarantees. Additionally, one dirty bomb would send the whole market to hell.

      Subject: Prospect Block Association...

ive been livin on the block for the past 7 yrs... the block party which takes place the wknd before labor day has been goin on long since i moved to the hood... the president of our block assoc lives on the block.

each house does their own thing... my blgd has a little cook-out out front, others just decorate, etc. the block is cut off to traffic for the kid who love it... there are craft tables, they pull out the basketball hoop and other kids ride their bikes, scooters, boards, back and forth...

the music on the other hand literally shakes my walls... the speaker(s) are huge! and alwasy set up across the street from my place...

if there are any local bands/musicians in the area... how'bout you dudes come down this year and perform! it would be something new and totally awesome!!!! im still learning the guitar, so im not the best choice to perform. LOL!
