No cookies. ...but sushi and turkey wraps.
A fine meeting.
Sorry I was unable to make it to the meeting I really wanted to be there and meet all folks in the community I will make the next one I did sent in the application and a check to CHCA
Happy holiday to all
CHJ, I didn't have strong feelings about pawn shops, one way or the other, but I've had the opportunity to observe your online persona on several sites now.
I have to say, it is certainly not helping your cause.
CHJ, I didn't have strong feelings about pawn shops ok we are not a pawn shop had the opportunity to observe your online persona on several sites now.ok what sites and whats seems to be the problem
happy holiday
But you have a huge decal in your establishment that sort of says you are a pawnshop, and, your tone came perilously close to flouting the rules of polite discourse, CHJ.
Plus you have a blinged-out baby on the wall of your establishment, and you've expressed satisfaction that it upsets people. C'mon, how can you not see that some would take issue with that?
Mha when you get things correct we can speak until then just enjoy the art and I hope for Xmas you get a good pair of new reading glasses so you can see the difference between a pawn shop and jewelry shop
Happy holiday
ok what sites and whats seems to be the problem
Ok, I will assume this was a question. I follow Brooklynian as well as Ilovefranklinavenue and your spamming on the latter site is inappropriate. Why would you find it appropriate to comment on a post about a different business or about a different part of the community - and comment only about how people should bring their unused electronics to you? People know you are around - trust me. People know where you are located. And people will see your shop. Post where it's appropriate or you're going to be completely ignored as just spam - which I am assuming isn't what you want.
nothing wrong with a little advertising I had no clue it would offend anyone I figured it a new place lots of people read I love Franklin aver nostrand park and nick always has a nice story no one told to stop
Only Brooklynian told me to stop
I had no clue it would offend anyone
This is a recurring theme in your life, yes?
Could we have an online roast? I've got so many mean yet funny things to say right now.... I'm bu-bursting.
good for you the only thing you have say is what what no one cares what what you have say so keep it to your self
sad for me but good for you
Roast away. But old school rules. Do it with a tux on, metaphorically.
I don’t mine I have a tux and ready to roast will do it Donald trump way but wait mha needs to sell his computer to buy a tux how are we going to do the roast
MHA:
when are you going to stop posting as "CROW HILL JEWELRY"?
If things go south on this, the community should be responsible for addressing their concerns to the business owner. Should the business owner do nothing, then address it to elected officials. Otherwise, live and let live.
PittieCity,
It's not me. I am prone to believe that CHJ and 'The Real CHJ' are alternate sides of the same coin, like Bizarro Superman and Superman. Like the DC hero protagonist, 'the real CHJ expresses himself properly while like Bizarro Superman, 'CHJ' 'speaks pretty sometime'. A better analogy would be the Hulk and Bruce Banner. They're both the same person, but one is self aware and the other -- well -- you get the picture.
But, I agree with the idea that legitimate CHJ need validate who they are with a business card, a utility bill, or something else.
Hey CHJ/the Real CHJ, when are you going to plow the sidewalk in front of your establishment?
So what became of this? Did either CHJ validate their identity?
Nope. Nothing so far. I think the record speaks for itself. I am inclined to believe they are the same person. The first CHJ said things only CHJ would know. The second has only denied the first CHJ's comments, and only a self-serving interest would do that. My guess: they are a conglomerate, and they have differing approaches to dealing with the challenge of gaining public approval; it can only be in their interest to do so.
That being said, let's hope that they conduct their business responsibly. maybe they have some added twist to the whole way that they do their business. I have a suggestion. They should offer 'electronic recycling'.
Had they a business arrangement with an electronic recycling facility, that would go a very long way to creating goodwill in this community. Today I passed at least 3 televisions thrown out with regular garbage. If CHJ were able to give folks a few bucks for their legend electronic merchandise, or better, had they a dumpster one could throw it in for the sole purpose of taking it to a electronic recycling center, that would be keen. Just think of the money to be made recycling old computer monitors, and old speakers, etc.
Although the mural of the gilded crack baby still exists the Pawn Shop in no more.
Please someone open a good bagel shop there, I need one on/near Franklin.
Since the beginning, the owner of this shop did not perceive the local neighborhood community activists and its "up and coming" residents as being part of his market. I believe his perception was on the mark.
In contrast, his market strategy depended upon a population that is in desperate need of cash.
He seems to have bet that the neighborhood would return to its return to its drug and crime filled days. Over the course of the next 15 years, he might be right about the neighborhood, but at the moment, he was wrong.
Similarly, he clearly overestimated the number of desperate people he could attract to his business. If he is smart, he'll open his next location in an area that shows clearer signs of decline.
P.S. Yes, bagels would great.
I'm so late to this party and everything seems to have tidied up nicely. While reading through I just about lit up at MHA's mention of an electronic recycling location. I'm literally resting my feet on a computer tower I haven't been able to bring myself to toss, for the past year.
Isn't there some forward looking local business that would be willing to have such a recycling location set up? I always miss events and having something local would make it so much easier to toss said item in a shopping cart and meander over.
tate-
So far the only site I know of is in Gowanus.
Yes, Gowanus is very long way to push a cart full of outdated electronics.
You may need to keep watching for announcements, or trek to the one that often appears on weekends at the GAP Green Market.
...at tomorrow's mtg, I'll see if CHCA is willing to sponsor such an event.
The next Dept of Sanitation electronics recycling event in Brooklyn is May 6th in Prospect Park (corner of Parkside Ave & Prospect Park SW) -- also not super convenient to get to from Crown Heights.

...at tomorrow's mtg, I'll see if CHCA is willing to sponsor such an event.
Thank you Whynot.
I think we would be willing to sponsor, can you bring all the particulars about what is required and can everyone who is interested in helping please chime in and/or attend tonight's meeting.
It will ultimately boil down to having the "people power" to do it.
How can I have an Electronics Recycling event in my neighborhood? In order to make e-waste recycling accessible and convenient to New York City residents, the Ecology Center works with community partners to hold events in a variety of neighborhoods. If you would like to bring an electronics recycling event to your community, please contact info@lesecologycenter.org or 212-477-4022.
I spoke with Carrie. She told me they would love to come to Crown Heights, but the next time they have a truck available is in the Fall. She put my name on their waiting list, and she'll call me in a few months.
Here's how it would work:
a. A date would be set-up with Carrie
b. We'd tell everyone about the event.
c. On the day of the event, we'd pre-park cars in three adjacent spots then move them once Carrie's co-workers arrived in a big truck.
d. We'd hang out with them for about 6 hours
-thanking people for bringing us vintage computers that run
DOS 5.0 and AppleWorks.
-wondering to ourselves why they had stored these things in
their apartments for 15 years.
-helping them throw the stuff in the truck.
f. The truck would drive away.
I am hugely impressed with how fast that just got addressed and a solution provided. Well Done!
I can easily wait until the Fall to throw away my computer/foot rest.
tate-
I'm not sure I can wait until Fall for the details. Can you give me some idea of that footrest?
is it a 286 with a 5.25" drive?
a 386 with a 3.5" drive?
a CRT all in one Mac?
The 286 is probably a bit of a collectible by now. If someone has a functional one, I might take it off their hands
Update: CHCA will help out with said recycle event.
One of the attendees has been planning a seperate electronics recycle event at Brower Park in September, also using the LES Ecology Center. The two us will join forces on out advertising, having an event for western Crown Heights one weekend, and eastern Crown Heights the next weekend.
Using these strategies, we hope to amass a giant mound of WordPerfect 5.1 compatible machines, and (for a brief moment) recreate my college computer lab.
And the icky mural and unwanted pawn shop are gone. okay I just scrolled up and see that I am not the first to notice.
Urban Explorer, Talked to the people on St. Marks near franklin and they are still working on their bagel bakery with outdoor space. maybe this summer!
I hear bagels stores can only be in certain zoning codes.
I hope ours is one of them.
they have been threatening since last summer and said they have been dealing with all the permits etc. but they are going forward and the patio looks great.
Patio?
patio, side yard. This location is a house with a driveway on the side adjacent to the building supply yard. There is grass and pavers. check it out.
Oh! You know what? I missed your post that said it was St. Marks and Franklin. Totally thought you were referring to the old Pawn Shop, my mistake
From pawn shop to bad art to electronic recycling to bagels.......
I'm surprised our conversation about "the pros and cons of local control" stayed on topic for as long as did, and think we totally deserve bagels as a reward.
Tsarina-
A smile will be brought to my face when the construction supply lot finally gets built on. Ironically, it will be unable to sell to developers the supplies needed to build its own reuse...
bagel place will be on St. Marks behind buildingsupply lot. Observe 1st house with glassed in ground floor with illuminated exit sign. bricked patio on side of house and no signage.
Two things:
First, where the "hood rich baby mural" once stood, there is a sign for "store available." Anyone have any info on what's going on there or what kind of stores are looking at that space?
Second, whatever happened to that prospective bagel house shop on Franklin and St Marks. Did they get held up in building permit hell?
Bagels have been promised for two years. I guess hey are dreamin'. Get my bagels from connecticut muffin. And the work has begun on the beer/gastropub across the street at the former Millie's head to toe. Things may start happening on Nostrand....
I sincerely hope they change the name from Nostrand Avenue Pub to something awesome. Nostrand Avenue Pub, abbreviated NAP ironically, is such a boring name
