Rounding at Dutch Boy/Franklin Park

      We went to Franklin Park today for some beers and some garlic/parm fries. We ordered our beers at the bar counter, as we always do, and paid $4 each for them. We tipped $1 each, an even $10 bill to the bartender.

      We then sat down, and a waitress from Dutch Boy came over offering us menus. We ordered the $6 garlic and parm fries. After finishing our beers and our fries, we asked for the check.

      Here it is:

      As you can see, there was a FORTY-SEVEN cent rounding to our bill! If we hadn't waited for the waitress to return, we would have assumed it was $6 for fries, left $7 on the table for her tip and left. We brought it to her attention -- this is nearly half a dollar! -- her response was "This is what our computer system does. If it's less than $0.50 we round down and if it's more than $0.50 we round up. We don't keep change back here."

      So we paid and walked to the front restaurant -- Which is connected to the bar we were just sitting in!! -- and they do have a cash register, they do keep change, and they don't round up! So we asked them about it. They said that if you order in Dutch Boy and carry it back to the bar yourself you don't have to deal with rounding. If you order in the back, you do.

      No one we talked to saw why this was something to be upset about. I get that I'm griping on a message board about $0.47. But on the other hand, that is my money you literally just took for absolutely no reason besides being too lazy to go to the cash register in the next room!

      Just wanted people to be aware -- in the future, we'll order up front and bring it back ourselves. I see no reason to pay someone for no extra convenience or service.

      Also, they do this but still don't take credit cards? Come on....

          §5-59  Restaurant Surcharges.
          (a) A seller serving food or beverages for consumption on the premises may not add surcharges to listed prices. For example, a restaurant may not state at the bottom of its menu that a 10 percent charge or a $1.00 charge will be added to all menu prices.
          (b) A seller may impose a bona fide service charge (such as an added charge for two persons splitting one meal, or a per person minimum charge), if the charge is conspicuously disclosed to the consumer before the food is ordered.
          (c) In this section, the term "surcharge" does not include tax.

      Again, it's not just $0.47. But imagine if we went every Saturday for beers and fries. That's $24.44 stolen from us each year!

      Regardless of the amount,stealing from customers due to laziness just really sits with me the wrong way...

      In their defense, from what the waitress said they do round down when it is below 50 cents. So unless they diabolically arranged their menu such that it would always be over 50 cents, I'd say it's probably a wash for both you and them over time.

      That said, it does seem to be of questionable legality.

      It works out to be a wash for them today I'm sure - but it certainly wasn't a wash for us today - we lost money!

      Also, we are creatures of habit when ordering, so it will never work out in our favor.

      I lose more money in my couch cushions.

      Here's an idea, why not figure out how much you need to spend for the rounding to work in your favor? Then you can habitually order the same thing and save money every time!

      I'm not a big fan of this "rounding" trend that seems to be happening at more and more restaurants.

      Why don't they just work backwards: set their prices so that when tax is included, the numbers work out to an even amount?

      Meanwhile, if that were me, that $.50 would be coming out of my server's tip.

      Another question I do not understand: how does one order of $4.00 fries get to be $6.00 when it makes it over to the right side of the check?

      Why don't they just work backwards: set their prices so that when tax is included, the numbers work out to an even amount?

      The Mexican chain Chipolte does this. By pricing their burritos at $7.81, once a drink is added, the bill is always a round dollar amount, or ends in 0.50.

      For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

      I think that plain fries are $4 but the garlic parm are $6. My guess is when you put it in the POS system you hit "Fries" and then you can put your modifiers in "Parm" so the check prints out both sets of prices. Depending on how you set up a POS system you can get lots of crazy things printing on checks (which is why there are always stories of people getting checks that have waitstaff notes like "Fat chick with red hair" printed on the check.

      The beers were $4 each.

      I never noticed the rounding thing. I'm surprised that more places don't do this or modify their prices to what Chipotle has. Dealing with pennies and nickles are a hassle for the customer and business.

      The important question is, what does Hooters do? That should be the gold standard by which all restaurants operate.

      I suspect that the actual Hooters are artificially rounded.

      ....Likely always upward.

      For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

      Right. Fries are $4 plus $2 for parm and garlic. So $6 total (as per the menu)

      Beers are paid at the bar/with separate wait staff ... Dutch Boy and Franklin Park operate slightly separate.
