CHCA has started a petition AND a letter writing campaign to save the Impact Zone on Franklin Avenue.

Impact is the NYPD program that deploys foot patrol to communities in the City where the need is the greatest.

For the past year Franklin Avenue has benefitted greatly by being an Impact Zone; it has made our neighborhood a much safer place to live and work

You can download letters and read more about this on our website

Were they planning on ending the program? When?

Every six months the location of the Impact Zones are re-evaluated as to where they are most needed and will be most effective. We have heard that they are considering moving it from Franklin to another community, it is important that NYPD hears from the people whose lives will be impacted by this change.

Thanks to those who have already signed the petition and sent in letters. We need you to spread the word, Please talk to neighbors and ask them to participate as well. Feel free to print out letters and get them signed, we will take care of mailing anything that is dropped off at HAD Associates (737 Franklin Ave)

This article in the Daily News today makes it sound as if a few Impact Zones will be eliminated.

      CHCA-
You may need more than letters and petitions to keep an Impact Zone on Franklin Avenue; you may need some high-profile, violent incidents this summer. A friend at Police Plaza might help as well.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Thanks to everyone who has already signed the petition and/or written a letter and thanks for the heads up on the article; all the more reason for people to speak up and be heard. Remember, have everyone in your household do this, each person is a potential vote and when it comes to city politics, that's what counts.

If you have had trouble accessing the petition, please try again. (change.org is the site that hosted the Guggenheim's petition to free Ai Wei Wei and they feel the Chinese gov't is hacking them).

you can read more about this issue and download the letters on our site: http://crowhillcommunity.org/Impact.shtml

And PLEASE help us get the word out,
      thanks

We are continuing to collect letters and send signatures to Chief Nelson and Commissioner Kelly. Last week the following joint statement was released by Asemblyman Karim Camara and Council Member Letitia James about retaining the NYPD Impact Zone in Crown Heights North along with links to our petition and sample letters.

If you haven't done so already, please consider joining this effort
      thx

“For the past year Crown Heights North has benefited greatly from being designated a NYPD Impact Zone. The law enforcement officers of the 77th precinct that patrol the neighborhood have done a stellar job in monitoring crime activity. As a result, criminal acts have noticeably decreased. The Impact Zone initiative is to be credited in part for helping to make Crown Heights a safer place to live and work.

Recently, the City's Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) approved the creation of a new historic district in Brooklyn called the Crown Heights North II Historic District. Borders of the new district include Brooklyn Avenue to the east and Bergen Street to the north, Nostrand Avenue to the west and Eastern Parkway to the south. The new district is adjacent to the 472-building historic district that the LPC designated in 2007 as well. In light of these historic districts now in place, the presence of an NYPD Impact Zone is more important than ever.

Also, as violent activity seems to increase during the summer, now is not the time to reduce the number of cops on-duty in the area. We fear that it will lead to an up-tick in negligent behavior. With schools out for summer and fewer opportunities for our youth, we are concerned that the loss of the Impact Zone will precipitate a sharp decline back to former dangerous conditions. Please join the Crow Hill Community Association, the 77th Precinct, and other community stakeholders in preserving the NYPD Impact Zone initiative to keep our streets thriving.”

Couldn't the criminals just move a block or two over? Seems like a game of whack-a-mole. Why should Franklin continue to be an impact zone w/crime on the rise a few blocks east?

I've come to a conclusion about impact zones:

Essentially, they exist to discourage profligate weed-selling and the collateral crimes that accompany weed-selling.

But first, I have to make commentary about weed selling before going forward. My own experiences are by no means scientific, but, they are painfully anecdotal, and unfortunately consistent. This is my assessment of the situation:
We need the weed sellers to sell weed. We need them to continue to sell their product. You see, the weed sellers amongst us are the dudes and dudettes who sat (and sit) in the back of the classroom in high school (if they made it that far)and, for whatever the reason (dyslexia?) they can/could not FOCUS on anything. So, they sell a guaranteed product that's bound to make a few bucks... One more thing about weed sellers: The ones I have met are either congenital/acculturated potential/accomplished SOCIOPATHS.
And this brings me to my need to express that we need NOT legalize marijoowanna, for if we did, these mothafukkas would be selling crystal meth, or some other gawd-awful drug that would make crackheads out of the upcoming generation. Can you imagine the horror of being able to get a pack of spliff at your local Duane Reade? What would the back of the class dude or dudette do? They would sell SOMETHING ELSE, and thus the problem...

Some INNOCEENT dude got his chest punctured a few times really close to home (literally) and it was a discourse between the Back-of-the-Classians that did the discussion, and the killing. It is eternally upsetting to walk by the death scene... I propose a pact between the Back-Of-The-Classians, and those of us who gravitated to the middle and the front. Tell them to open up a store on The Avenue, and to ensure that the product is sold there to exclusive clientele. No more of this wholesale to retail relation-shizer. Let us go into business man. Let's sell really good, clean product, you know? NO more of this weed sold from behind a tire, where the tire meets the oft-spat upon curb of the street. Who smokes that shit anyway?

I have NEVER seen herb sold from ANYONE in this neighborhood that I feel confident buying and sending to my brain. What pisses me off more than the violence associated with smoking herb is the unsanitary and unsavory nature of those doing the selling. I would never buy any of the stuff sold around here. It's WEED for fuck's sake!

It would be great to live in a world where the product had no demand, but that is not The Verse I live in, so, we need to deal with the entrepreneur and the Devil that he sells before we stanch him out and he sells something WORSE. WE all know the players here. Let's do dialogue with them, extract a tax and live in peace. Mark my words: PLEASE, mark them. They know who WE are; they know who I am, that's for sure.....Seriously.
