Shooting
Park Pl & Franklin St
Brooklyn, NY
9/5/2011 9:15 p.m.source: http://gothamist.com/map/
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
We've been watching the helicopter circling over that area and wondered what happened. Does anyone know any more details? Geez, today is shaping up to be pretty violent.
There go more sirens.
-
so many helicopters and sirens! wonder how bad it was.
-
copter right above classon. ambulances now coming back wrong way down park. i think i heard a few dozen pops - thats why i couldnt imagine so many gun shots - thought for sure a string of fire crackers.
-
a viable shootout; two blips turned out to full-out gun battle. didn't count but in my addled brain, about 20 or more shots. walking the effing dog: ran for our lives like the two kids in front of us who noticed the first two subtle pops and said pleading: 'why they shooting?'
sounded like everything was coming from Franklin Avenue near Park, Sterling, Prospect. Anyone else?
Closest I've ever been. Closest ever wanna be.
-
It's right in front of my apartment. Park Place on the north side, close to the S entrance.
At least 75 cops, 10 detectives, 20 EMTs are outside....people screaming, I saw the boy (I swear, he looked 15) run down the street with all 75 cops take off after him. They put 2 people in cop cars. I also saw a cop push a kid down the stairs (between street and sidewalk) and another cop kick him while he was down. Luckily his captain saw it and screamed at the cops in front of everyone - it could have gotten worse if he hadn't stepped in from both the crowd and for the boy.
It's loud of there -- between the helicopter, screaming, sirens, and the soca music playing....
ETA: Only one stretcher with a young male went past into the many ambulances outside. He didn't look so good.
-
helicopter right over us now, at prospect btwn franklin and classon. seems to be working its way very gradually north, scanning with searchlight on franklin.
-
Heard it too and thought it was fireworks. Then saw everyone run. I'm on Park between Classon and Franklin, and the cops have the block on lock down. They're rummaging through trash cans for what I assume to be guns.
It was crazy. Absolutely madness. They arrested a kid who ran into the driveway beside my house.
The parade day never ends well.
-
I was in LaunchPad on Franklin just south of Park when we heard the first shots. I looked out from behind the curtain and saw 4-6 officers with guns drawn firing on the entrance of the first door on Park to the west of Franklin, then I backed away from the windows until the firing stopped. Later once the place flooded with cops I looked again and saw someone cuffed and stuffed into a car (it looked like the cop may have hit him, but they were across the street so it was hard to tell). A little while later we heard them calling for locking down the block so we left and went south, away from the throng of cops and emergency workers and under the police lines at Sterling.

~50 % african american youth unemployment (nod to labor day)
Gold at ~$2,000/oz (nod to US dollar)
= ~50 shootings over labor day weekend
before the country goes to hell in a handbasket I suppose the city must go first.

lots of stuff on twitter, as you can imagine --

Kind of knew this is what would happen this year.
-
Such a quiet summer, too. I guess folks felt they had to make up for it.

Same incident, described by a different reader over here:

and of course right after i posted that, i got a note from a friend on franklin and sterling that there was a lots of gunfire on the street outside her apartment. i live down the street from the 77th outpost and there have been nonstop lights/sirens coming and going and helicopters overhead for the past hour+
she just updated a minute ago:
"The shootout is over... Someone shot someone else and then a cop got shot and then some more people got shot. Everyone is accounted for here. Come on crown heights. Get it together."For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
As per Thee Rant, a blog that only lets active NYPD and retired NYPD post, several people were shot, including an officer.
The 2 perpetrators are believed to have been killed on the scene.

It's being featured right now on NBC news (11pm).
4 shot, 2 dead, 1 of the shot was a female police officer.
-
there were so many shots i just didnt believe they were gunshots-- i could hear them all the way over here at brooklyn ave.
-
This neighborhood proves time and again that it's not a good place for block parties and parades. Same old story--someone had an argument, left, then came back and had a gunfight. Only this time they shot a cop. That explains why people were getting stomped, and rightly so.
Cops literally on every corner and it makes no difference. Time for privileges to be revoked.

video with no new details:

Brooklynleather, it bears mentioning that one of the police-scanner geeks reported shots fired out on Brooklyn Avenue near St. Marks around the same time, so you may have heard that.

ughhhhh. why!!!!
the shots didn't sound that close. then again someone was shot over here the same day i was mugged a few years ago and i didn't hear a thing.
but i was at the bus stop around noon today and this woman who lives on st marks and brooklyn was also there and we both heard maybe 3 shots fired coming from kingston or albany more likely. didn't hear anything about that, though.
-
I'm furious. I hope no innocent people were hurt.
Like others, I thought there were too many pops for it to be gunshots. I guess I shouldn't put it together when the chopper came.
-
i definitely saw cops on EVERY corner today as i was headed to the beach. cops even came into my building yesterday and i asked if anything was wrong and they said no. weird.
-
Makes you wonder how many people you passed in the street today were strapped.
-
TRUE.
-
Daily News story says Prospect Place (which doesn't seem right) and that one dead was a woman who was caught in the crossfire.
The cops scheduled a press conference at Brookdale Hospital right about now, so maybe these details will get clearer soon.
-
It did sound really close to me, and I could see the chopper from my window.
-
that is totally terrible and also really conflicting reports-- one article says 2 shooters were shot dead, cop shot in stomach. now others say shot in arm. and now the one dead is a bystander?
-
Probably really hectic and confusing. Still can't believe how many shots. Must have been a war zone.
-
Glad yall are okay, and glad the guy walking his dog got the he'll out of there. Could easily have been me a few hours earlier.
-
it definitely sounded like a lot of shots, like a semi-automatic weapon.
-
besides getting mugged, i have had a lovely time these last few years in crown heights but i really need to move before next west indian day parade weekend.
-
this police scanner is going to give me nightmares. someone was cut in the face with a razor blade.

It's a couple of days a year and it's easy enough to avoid. So sorry for the innocent loss of life, but that's one reason I won't sit on a stoop near a busy corner of CHN on Labor Day.
I did notice the huge concentration of police events around the neighborhood on the Gothamist newsmap. I wonder if the parade doesn't make the _rest_ of the city safer for the duration, as all of the troublemakers congregate on Eastern Parkway?

This is a very sad and tragic event that happened on Park Pl between Classon &u Franklin Ave.
My condolences goes all to the families that lost love ones.
Because the shooter was caught, the question I'm now curious about is:
How come anything positive that happens East of Washington Ave (Crown Heights true borders)up to Bedford Ave is hotly championed to have occurred in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, yet
anything negative that happens East of Washington Ave is categorized as having occurred in the Crown heights community?
The double standard, values and assumptions associated with this schizophrenic behavior is simply mind blowing.

Agreed. Undoubtedly the apartments for rent in this block are listed as "Prospect Heights" to get more rent.

Does anyone know if anything has been uncovered by the investigation? Seems like if Leroy Webster fired the first shots, so I'm wondering if there is any news on what the police are shutting off several city blocks to investigate.
Is Franklin open now? What about the Park Place shuttle stop?
-
I live on Park. The shuttle is open, but the street is not open to traffic. It's also cordoned off on Franklin too.
-
So the only block closed is Park between Classon and Franklin? Or is part of Franklin closed also?
-
Franklin, at last check, was closed at least from Prospect to Park.

There were a lot of shots fired, and I would imagine the police tend to like to account for all of their trajectories and final destinations.
-
Given the number of shots fired, I expect to see some evidence of the firefight to remain even after the police leave; notably chipped paint and concrete from impacts.
