Hello. Me and my spouse are a few days away from signing a lease in an apt near franklin and prospect. I've been looking at blogs and posts on line and have become increasingly concerned about the safety of the area as I've been reading about shootings of innocent victims, robberies, and sexual harrassment of women on Franklin ave. Also, I am a black woman and my partner is a white male and I'm concerned about provoking harrassment or even violence on Franklin ave. How realistic are my fears here? Any comments?

Can't say on the harassment, but I cover crime in that neighborhood for ProspectHeightsPatch.com and there are some muggings, but not a ton. You can see the crime reports at the crime section of my site. Look at the police blotters. I look at the police reports each week and every crime is listed. Good luck. It's a great hood in terms of restaurants, stores, people, etc.
-
No need for panic. I'm pretty sure no area of Brooklyn is crime free, so if you start following the news for any neighborhood, you'll see some muggings, etc. This happens to be a neighborhood with lots of online coverage from forums and blogs so you might see more reporting of what's going on.
Just visit where it is you might live during the day and at night to see how you feel about it, but I'm guessing you'll find it to be okay.
-
best way to see if you like a area is like opossum says, visit all times of day and night and week day and weekend and especially the time you come home from work and leave. see how you feel. if you feel uneasy don't sign.

How realistic are my fears here?Probably not very. White people have been seen on the block, as have interracial couples - you're far from breaking any barriers. That said, being comfortable and confident goes a long way, as far as personal safety is concerned; if you (and your BF) are going to walk around always looking over your shoulder, forget about it - I'm a firm believer that the air of fear is a trouble attractant.
...not that there's anything wrong with that. -
I live off Franklin and feel pretty safe day and night, although, having lived in NYC for a long time, I am always careful and aware of my surroundings. Franklin is rapidly changing and getting safer. But, I agree with the prior posts that you need to visit at various times of the day and night and make sure that you feel safe.

I told her so many times and told her once if we ever get attack i'm ditching your ass for being stupid!!

You should be fine. Since the early 90s, the area has improved dramatically in terms of safety. You might get the occasional wisecrack for being an IR couple, but that will likely be the exception. IMO, the neighborhood will only continue to gentrify, which means more bars and restaurants, lower crime rate, and overall better quality of life.

My existence is proof that their is no omnipresent danger to chubby, wimpy white guys who wear white socks.
Be aware of your surroundings, and try not to be intoxicated at 2 AM while wearing a large target.
See you soon.
Welcome to the hood

Sadly, Whynot left my presence rather intoxicated around 2:am over this weekend. As he's posting today, he seems to have gotten home okay.
If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

Thanks..you all made me feel a lot better about our decision...especially you Whynot..I'm looking for you when we move in and buying you a beer..we could use more chubby friends who wear white socks.

My roommate and I are two white 20-something girls who come and go at all hours on Franklin. The only thing I make note of is to stay on the opposite side (the east side of Franklin) of 95 South if I'm coming home alone at night. I find there's usually a crowd outside that can sometimes get rowdy. I'd rather avoid the catcalls if I can.
I like it here a lot, and it only seems to be getting better.

Boygabriel, white sock people rock. The next time you are in a Dollar Store, big yourself up some. They are like $4 for 8 pairs.

Whyfi-
I don't tell people how they HAVE TO dress, and accessorize.
GQ magazine makes the rules; I just follow them.
....but to answer your question, I believe it is proper to wear white socks with sandals to the the upcoming Kids Day on Franklin Avenue.

With my very eyes, I recently witnessed a man wearing jeggins on Franklin, and was so horrified that I created a thread to discuss it.http://brooklynian.com/forum/crown-heights-and-prospect-lefferts-gardens/sad-hipster-is-sad
It took time, but I have come to accept that I am not the best looking person that Brooklyn has to offer.
However, I can't see how my presence will make the children or the newbie Macbech unsafe.
Whyfi is a completely different matter.

The question is why the very lovely Mrs. WhyNot hangs out with a white socks wearing guy like WhyNot.
There must be more to him than meets the eye...
-
Booklaw-
You are getting off topic. Out of respect to the OP, I believe that we should keep this thread on the topic of the hazards Maybech and her husband may face. While we have dutifully given the threat of crime adequate attention, clearly you guys are not as horrified by jeggins as you should be.
Click for here random jeggins photos
...what is wrong with you people?
For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
Whynot, you are totally right about jeggings; kinda like ProCro. In fact, maybe before we allay the fears of people who are fearful about moving into the neighborhood, we first ought to find out whether they wear jeggings. The idea of one day having to encounter crowds of men wearing jeggings on Franklin...... Gentrification is one thing; jeggings are another.
-
Photogirl-
While jeggings may be especially wrong on men, let's not forget the similar hazards they pose to the eyes when worn by certain women. As Whyfi, xlizelx and I agreed, jeggings are usually wrong, but there are right times and places for them.
...but I am with you.
Jeggings are just too risky of a clothing choice, and I would hate to see this neighborhood become a place where residents routinely made such reckless choices without understanding the potential consequences on those around them.
As stated above, I dutifully study GQ magazine in order to be appealing to those around me. I consider it the responsible thing to do.
I hope Maybech's husband does the same; it will allow him to dress as well as I do.

While we are making fun of jeggings, I'm tempted to make fun again of WhyNot's white socks.
But I have a small problem there, given that I wear white socks pretty much every day...
-
I don't need to worry about fashion sense anymore (jeggings tucked in to white socks, perhaps?), as I now have the foolproof chick magnet accessory -
...not that there's anything wrong with that. -
I am soooo giving the newest Brooklynian, "Whyfi Jr", white socks for his 1st birthday.
...meanwhile, Whyfi hopes to use him to become someone's DILF??
Clearly, no one is safe.

Note: Not an actual photo of Whynot.

Armchair-
With all due respect, you have failed to convince me that Whyfi's spawning is a threat to Maybech and her husband. It is also unclear to me how no longer wearing white socks with your sandals will make them safer.
Based on how frequently this thread is going off topic, can I conclude we are running out of things that Maybech and her husband should be afraid of?
Personally, I think we have covered everything.

I'm not sure that is a fashion question GQ can answer.
