Hey all
I have seen posts go about God Is... but I was walking today I saw this new place called Skazzy Cafe which is right near God Is. It looks like this place has a new awning up and the windows covered in butcher paper. Anyone know anything about this place?

is it on the corner of Washington and Prospect?
...where the old Crown Fried Chicken was?
I had heard that place was going to be bagels.

The great names along Washington continues. *sigh*

-
BEFORE this awning went up, I said that I felt like I was living at the epicenter of bad restaurant names... Man, I am so right, sometimes...
...not that there's anything wrong with that. -
Mods-
Either this thread or this thread http://brooklynian.com/forum/prospect-heights/shocker-crown-fried-chicken-on-waprospect-is-no-more/page/2#post-730532 should be locked.Should we continue to celebrate/mourn the loss of Crown Fried Chicken, or celebrate/mourn the arrival of Snazzy.
It is a tough call, but this is why the mods are present. I submit to thier wisdom

Is it Snazzy or Skazzy? Both are a bit awkward, but at least "snazzy" is a word.
-
It's "Skazzy".
-
Skazzy

Awning is no longer there...
-
very weird.
Does this mean that Crown Fried Chicken will come back?
can we hope that the awning will come back with a new name?

I vote we start calling it "Skuzzy Cafe."

Please let it come back with either a new name, or a better font. If it doesn't, I don't know what God Is...
-
awning going back up today. Looks to be just as ugly as it was before. There's a phone number on it, from the pic above it doesn't look like it was there before so that may be the reason it came down.

So, as ghostinthemachine points out, God is... Skazzy.
Although this is an interesting revelation, I can't say it trumps me learning that Judgement Day is scheduled for tomorrow.

There was some sort of opening celebration happening here as I walked by last night - there were balloons out front and people cheering as they raised the security gates. Any signs of life today?
-
Walked past there before noon today, not open.

I saw no activity this weekend.
Assuming they have their permits in place, they'd be foolish not to open before Labor Day Weekend.

Skazzy is a weird name, but as long as they offer good food, or coffee, or bagels, or whatever it is they sell, I don't care!
-
There were people working inside tonight. The paint job is not to my taste, but it's done, and there's what looks like a bar on the wall that adjoins to Diva Desires. So maybe they will be open for the weekend.
-
Indeed!
Skazzy opened tonight (Friday Sept 2nd). The staff looks forward to your business.

Anyone have a clue what type of cuisine it is? The interior Looks inviting.
-
American diner.
Here's the menu. Make it larger by holding the control key and the + key.

ooh! nice!
-
i hate the name but i am still willing to check it out.
-
Has anyone actually been yet? I walk by all the time and never see anyone in there. I fear a short lifespan.
-
They were not even open for dinner last week, although there were sometimes people in the restaurant working/learning, so I haven't even had a chance to give them a try.
-
I have not been yet, but my thought is that they offer a similar menu to very-nearby cafe, "The Spot".
...their prices are similar as well.
...but their decor and uniforms make Skazzy nicer.
I do not think there will be enough demand to support both establishments.
If Skazzy's food is as good as The Spot, I think The Spot will disappear. ...we will become Spot-less
(sorry, I couldn't resist)

If this place is now closed, it was only open for about 10 weeks.

Spot was good, big portions, VERY cheap. Service was pleasant. Only critique was that their mimosas were warm and they put ice in the first one they served.
I would go again and just deal with the warm drinks due to the prices alone - lol.
-
Skazzy is open tonight, despite being closed yesterday.
Correct: the nearby Spot appears to be keeping it's customers, despite Skazzy being snazzier.

Worst. Name. Ever.

Had dinner at Skazzy's tonight: mixed experience but might go back. We were the only people in the restaurant and the service was really awkward. Our server was friendly but inattentive and the food took over forty minutes to come out from the kitchen. Also, a bunch of menu items weren't available.
That said, portions were very generous and it was very tasty (I got tilapia, my sister got salmon. Came with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables.) The homemade ginger beer was also great.
When paying, I mentioned to the server that Skazzy's always appeared closed & she said that they were adjusting their hours and would be open later starting next week. The take-out menu we left with had Mon-Thurs from 6am-11pm and Fri-Sun hours from 6am-midnight. Delivery should also start soon. Not sure how much of this I believe, but these changes should help.

Ditto cliffsides.
The name is horrible. I'm surprised that they don't know that.
As defined in the urban dictionary-
1. skazzy. kind of neat, but slightly jankidy.
As used in conversation -
"What do you think of the bookshelf I made out of packing crates and drywall screws?"
"Uh, kinda' skazzy."
Well, hopefully they will survive and the food and service end up being better than the name might otherwise suggest.
-
From my walks, Skazzy continues to struggle to attract a dinner crowd, while The Spot continues to chug along.
The Spot continues to turn out reliable comfort food to a casual dining crowd.
Skazzy, I hope you find your stride soon.

Never seen more than one table occupied. Ever. Any time of day. How is this place still in business?
-
From what I can tell - Skazzy is not even listed in Yelp.
-
Skazzy and Janelle's amaze me because they seemed to put a lot of money into renovating their spaces, but then dropped the ball when it came to marketings.
Did they give local bars menus, so people could get delivery?
Did they plaster websites and local papers with ads?
Did they get something up on Yelp?
....compare and contrast with the publicity job that Bar Corvo did. All of that press for Bar Corvo didn't "just happen"; Someone put in a lot of work.

No, Bar Corvo went a little further than just ads and marketing promos. Their owners' restaurant Al Di La in Park Slope is at the center of a so-called revolution that is the subject of The New Brooklyn Cookbook. Thus, I think Bar Corvo is coming from a different perspective than either Jannelle's or Skazzy. I just wonder why Skazzy is so unpopular and yet The Spot has lines out the door for its boozy brunch?
-
Hmm... Maybe they should upload a photo to Brooklynian Local Businesses.
-
From what I recall, the Spot was struggling as well before it came up with "unlimited booze" as their brunch draw. They are still not very busy at dinner most nights, just a couple of tables.
But yes, Skazzy feels less cozy and welcoming than the Spot does, and its corner is less outdoor-dining-friendly than the Spot's is.
-
I don't care how good the food may be or free-flowing the liquor, I will not patronize a restaurant with a name as dumb as "Skazzy."
Went to Janelle's once (via a GroupOn or Living Social.) I wasn't impressed with the food or the drink.
But I can't wait to check out Bar Corvo.
-
Put the ignoring name memes aside for JUST A MOMENT and come and try it out tonight
you might not be disappointed!
-
At your request, I will overlook the name.
..could you meet me halfway and at least secure your awning in such a way that it does not look like it is going to fall on me as I enter.
It provides a bad first impression.
