Last night my roommate and I went to Starlite lounge for some cheap, strong drinks. (Nostrand & Bergen)

The place has been around since Stonewall, it's New York's oldest black-owned non-discriminating lounge. 45 years the owner said, Master J, who is a really nice guy.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention the place, it has personality and good music and apparently Saturday nights are hot dance nights otherwise it's just a comfortable dive. They also have cheeeap parties.

Yada yada, I just wanted to give a shout out because it seems like it's strugglin' a little.

i've never been to starlite, though i have lived nearby for the last 4 years. i have gone to q's a few times, but i found the drinks somewhat expensive for the locale. as for starlite, friendly vibe there? a decent place to sit and chill with a drink?

Last night there were only 5 or so people there but definitely friendly vibe, fun music (mix of new R&B, old R&B and some soul), and the owner who is also the bartender is super friendly and chatty. Asking everyone how there day was, etc. The drinks were decently inexpensive and strong. It's an old space with a dive, home decorated feel and a lot of personality. During the week he's only open until 11 p.m. if there are people there he stays open later but on Fridays and Saturdays he is open until 5a.m.

How cheap are cheap drinks? It's relative to everyone. Two dollars? Five? Tell me!

I feel you Josh B. $3 for well drinks and bottles of Bud and $5 for top shelf liquor... I think. I've only been there twice so I'm not positive, but I am positive that the first drink is strong and tasty and as time progresses Master J makes em stronger and stronger.

My roommate and I were thinking of checking out the dance party late night Saturday, but $5 is a little rich for my blood.

t-fal, do they still have the soul dj at Q's??

i haven't been there in a while, maybe a year or so? he was probably only about 17 years old, but he was really good at spinning the 60's and 70's soul.

i confess to being a flea market, street fair, side of the road, stoop sale, antique shop, charity shop afficionado. wonderful was the day someone threw out their remaining record collection on the side of nostrand ave. my boyfriend collected some of the best picks, though i wish i had been there to supervise, because i think we'd have taken much more, and we CERTAINLY would have left that stupid paul kanter/jefferson starship solo album where it belonged: alone and unloved on the corner of nostrand and park. i have been mostly buying vinyl or online digital. i would like to know of any good record stores in the crown heights/bed stuy vicinity that still deal in vinyl. most of the ones i see around here are cd oriented. do you have any faves?

I confess I mostly do the flea market thing as well - I was in Boston this weekend and got some great records which just made me wonder what Crown Heights had to offer since I don't usually look I more stumble upon music around here.

I go to this place on 5th and 9th sometimes in P Slope.

oooh boston, i miss the record shops there so much! newbury comics, nuggets, diskovery, flipside, oh how i long for the days of bargain bin shopping at flipside, or trying to convince the woman at diskovery to sell me something she undoubtably wanted to keep for herself.

ny has better flea market finds though. hmm... where have i shopped in brooklyn: beat street records at the fulton mall, something else on fifth, esp. on the fifth ave block party day, soundtracks on 7th, beacon's closet in w-burg (the 5th ave location consistently carries only the following: bad brains banned in dc, various elliot smith albums, various love albums, various velvet underground albums, and various pixies albums, all of which i already have. i have recently banned myself from record shopping for a while however, i went a little out of control this summer.

to bring this back on topic:

Master J, where do you shop for records locally for your dj-ing at the Starlite Lounge?

      LOL, those were mine!

There used to be two great record stores at Nostrand and . . . I can't remember. It was the only reliable place to find Fela Kuti discs in NYC for years. Most of their stuff was Carribean.

Fela Kuti is on Quannum now, so the discs should be easier to find.

O I know. Much of the catalog was issued on cd, but I don't think it was until after he died. Not the same!

Do you know if those music shops are still around at Nostrand and whatever? I think it was close to New York Ave, but I don't really remember . . .

I hope there is still some stuff at the Salvation Army, I want to check it out.

T-fal, when I was in Boston I got a bunch of records at Nuggets and it was 15% off with a Sox ticket, which I had, I was loving it.
