    1. Sigh.

The "attack" mentioned in the first paragraph (or is it an overly-long headline?) is a reference to groups who have protested some reggae lyrics that advocate killing gay people.

      This cannot possibly end nicely.

Mon Jul 7, 3:01 AM ET

Although reggae is known for its militancy and its resistance to injustice, the reggae community has remained calm throughout the attack on the music by Peter Tatchell and other Gay activists groups. Rather than going on the offense, the reggae community will instead unite in solidarity a day prior to labor day in New York City.

(PRWEB) July 7, 2008 -- TCOOO Productions the label behind the "18 Karat Reggae" CD series is holding the first ever Straight Pride Parade in Brooklyn, New York on August 31, 2008. The parade will take place on Eastern Parkway along the same route as the annual Caribbean labor day parade.

New reggae / dancehall sensation Jango Fresh said, "the Straight pride parade is a great idea because when a song like "Hit them hard" by my label mate Stapler can be banned just because it stresses the importance of a male and a female in every family, it is a sign that heterosexuals need to wake up.

The Straight Pride Parade is a chance for Heterosexuals to gather together and proudly embrace their sexuality. The Parade will also allow reggae and dancehall fans who are in New York City for the Labor Day celebrations to get together and celebrate reggae, dancehall and family in love and unity. Adults are encouraged to bring their children along for the celebrations, as the event will be family oriented.

The president of TCOOO said he hopes the event will unify the reggae community who has seen many reggae events cancelled recently not only in the United States but all over Europe and the Caribbean. "I sat quietly and watched as they cancelled artists like Buju Banton, Sizzla Kalonji and Capleton" he said, "but when the gay community went after TCOOO artists like Vineyard the Rebel Priest, Stapler and Jango Fresh we decided that we must make a show of strength."

Reggae artist Stapler whose song "Hit them Hard" was climbing the reggae charts was suddenly banned for what the artist said was nothing but pro family lyrics. "It is like we are not allowed to talk about the importance of a family anymore" Stapler told DJ Ron Muschette on Irie FM in Jamaica.

TCOOO Productions whose profiles can be found at [www.myspace.com/tcooo http://www.myspace.com/tcooo and [www.tcooo.imeem.comwww.tcooo.imeem.com is getting a lot of support for staging the Straight Pride Parade as thousands of fans have already let it be known that they will be attending the parade in August. All the artists who are on the latest TCOOO release "18 Karate Reggae: Global Warming" will be performing at the parade. These artists include Stapler, Jango Fresh, Vineyard the Rebel Priest, Massicker and Zeego Zaro.

      Hit Them Hard - Stapler

      (chorus)

Jah Jah gonna hit them hard

All the men who visit men backyard

Leaving all the women to starve

One thunder ball and all of them pause

Hand in hand with my lady

Hug her and kiss her cause she carried my baby

      But some boys moving shady

While am chilling on the ends making sweet love to Sadie

All I know am here to produce and all the ladies you are my friends

From the past, the present, the future my girl, love and respect to the end

      (chorus)

Remember you are a King, what happened to your queen

The youths need a role model to instill self esteem

      So live your life clean

and you will see what I mean

      (chorus)

The world is spinning and everything in it

Mankind lose their way, some gone past their limit

Am here to advice and to be a critic

Be careful of the lifestyle you choose to exibit

      Children live what they learn

      Aren't you concerned

      of your choices in society

We need to preserve the value of a male and a female in every family

Probably not. Juvert's late at night and this seems to be a "family" event (ie-kids) so it'll probably be a day thing. Sigh. Just what I need that weekend, another crazy parade in front of my house! Only this one's worse cause its all politically motivated and shit.

I suggest making out with the girl of your choice.
    9. I plan to stay waaay the hell away. A parade designed to celebrate musicians who are throwing a fit over being criticized for songs about killing queer folks hardly seems a safe place for queer folks to be.

yeah, i'm torn between demanding a counter-protest and spending the weekend in montana or maine or somewhere else far away beginning with m.

i get that this isn't j'ouvert, but the whole weekend is like one continuous parade/party, and i'm not sure it's so smart for me to go to j'ouvert if people are still het up from the afternoon dumbness. (i'm not so good at watching my mouth or at physical fights.)

I posted this in the political thread, but it occurs to me that it might be interesting here as well, so...

Oh yeah, in researching the Straight Pride Parade, I came across another Obama issue. It is posted on TCOOO's myspace page:

      "A war dem a push

From the little street thug to the devil's son George Bush" – Bookman

I have always been convinced that George Bush is from the lineage of the devil. Now I knew it was all over the media that Obama was related to Cheney, in fact Obama referred to the dick as the Black sheep of the family. However, I must have been sleeping or on vacation when the media reported that Obama was also related to George Bush because I surely missed that one

Anyway, I was sent a video recently that had me doing my own research and I found out that all the major American newspapers reported that Obama and Bush are cousins. Truth be told, the video I am referring to was actually sent to me on July 1st. I actually thought about whether or not I should share the video the same way Dani was kind enough to share it with me. I decided to share the video

As you watch the video, keep in mind all the smear campaigns that they have out there against Obama and be aware that this video could be another one. There is a place in the video where the speaker says "DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA". Hopefully you will all do your own due diligence.

      All thanks to Dani

      <video>

Do you think that Obama is a puppet of the illuminati and he himself may not even know it?

Yes, these are the fine folks apparently bringing us the Brooklyn Straight Pride Parade...

Ugh!!! Their statement is so full of BS -

Come on really - that song is not pro family - if that is the case why not stress the importance of men taking care of the babies they produce - I know many gay couples whose children do have a male and a female in their family, they are called grandparents, aunts and uncles. What about the lyrics that call women bitches and hoes - I guess that is unifying and family oriented huh?

This is just a hate parade being billed as a unity parade - I hope it pours that day

Nothing I've heard of. Some folks I work with are discussing contacting the mayor's office and the NYPD, though, to ask for extra attention that day to protect LGBT people who live in the neighborhood. Given that there will already be an increased police presence that weekend it might not be necessary, though.

just left a message for christene quinn. hoping I get a response. I'd like the protest to be somewhat formal simply because there will be HUGE numbers of young men at this crap and I really like my teeth not getting bashed out of my face. is she responsive? anyone know?

I don't think it is good for this company to be using the West Indian Day Parade as an excuse for this type of homophobia. I don't quite understand the concept of being bothered by what 2 people do in the privacy of their bedroom and I hope that this does not turn into some kind of excuse for violence. I hope this gets shut down before it gets started.

I agree, except I don't want to see it get shut down -- they do have a Constitutional right to have whatever kind of stupid parade they want. What I would like to see is that they either realize what a bad idea it is and back out (unlikely) or that they're so disorganized it never happens.

I agree. I don't want it shut down. I just want the protest to be loud and proud. that's all. straight, not, etc, we should all be happy about seeing families enjoying themselves on labor day.

but I have no interest in fucking with the constitution. I just want to employ my goddamned rights. and guess what? they all come from the same place!

I'm curious as to whether this is a real parade. They need permits and whatnot, no? Is this not something that someone can check on? I wonder if it is just some press release publicity wildcat thing. Usually such an announcement would contain things like, oh, I don't know, a TIME, etc.

okay. the speaker's office asked me to put my request in writing. basically, I was going to email her something to the effect of:

      a) do you want to participate in a protest (and thus let all protesters benefit from the add'l protection that will be there for you)?

      or

      b) will you make an official statement obviously praising the first amendment and these folks right to march but denouncing it as anti-unity and anti-family?

thoughts? any advice from people who deal with politicians all the time? and really, I don't need the snark so if that's your plan, back off.

yeah. I mean, I guess all protests are essentially futile endeavors (and I'm not saying this in jest): how many of us protested the iraq war? how many of us protested welfare "reform" (really, anti-woman tax-bennies for the rich)? for what? for why? nobody for that stuff was swayed, no one really gave a shit. I mean, MILLIONS of people protested the war in iraq around the world ... even though we all know saddam was a nasty, murderous son-of-a-stinky. we still protested because we knew it was a big pile of horseshit. and it's still happening. so ...

I guess I don't know WHY I want a protest, but I do want something. a protest is what I can come up with as a leftist weirdo. but I'm trying to think creatively, figure something else out. ask 95 south to have a gay night? hang out at starlite during the "straight pride" parade and get wasted with fellow gays and gay friendly folk? dunno. just ... something. anything.

    33. I don't think it needs to be terribly detailed or anything. Do mention that you're a constituent who lives in the neighborhood where this thing is taking place. Try to keep it short and sweet. That's about all I can think of to suggest.

One of my coworkers who lives on Eastern Parkway happened upon Hakeem Jeffries doing his summer "office hours" thing in the subway last night and spoke with him about this whole thing. He thought it was horrible and said he was going to speak with Tish James about issuing a statement denouncing the "straight pride" parade. My coworker told him she appreciated that but was mainly concerned about the safety of LGBT people in the neighborhood and urged him to use his influence to make sure there is a strong police presence.
    34. alafairnadia » I guess I don't know WHY I want a protest, but I do want something. a protest is what I can come up with as a leftist weirdo. but I'm trying to think creatively, figure something else out. ask 95 south to have a gay night? hang out at starlite during the "straight pride" parade and get wasted with fellow gays and gay friendly folk? dunno. just ... something. anything.

As someone who does LGBT civil rights work for a living, I just find it very frustrating when well-meaning people squander their time and energy on stuff like this when there are so many substantial, meaningful, more effective ways you can work towards equality for LGBT people.

There are tons of more productive things one can do that can contribute to real long-term change, like making a donation to the California campaign to fight the anti-gay marriage ballot initiative, volunteering at an LGBT youth center, persuading one's employer to offer domestic partner protections or a gay-inclusive non-discrimination policy, or asking your state Congresscritter to vote for the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act or the Dignity for All Schools Act.

I know that protest is largely catharsis and simply being heard and I absolutely support protesting and have certainly participated in quite a few in my time, but yelling back at a bunch of immovable, tone-deaf homophobes isn't going to change anything for the better -- and, in this case, I think it puts people in harm's way.

Edited to add: I just looked at this again, and it's awfully lecture-y. I apologize for that. But yeah, do be careful if you go anywhere near this thing, or even if you just go to Starlite that day.

I agree that protests are largely ignored an ineffective these days. I agree with appollonia666 that if you really want to help LGBT rights then you should contribute time or money to an organization like NGLTF or the NYC Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. It will do much more good. I have a feeling that this "straight pride" parade is just an attempt to get press for an unknown reggae singer. Probably won't get much support or interest from local press though.

I still haven't heard anything concrete about whether or not this abomination is actually taking place yet? If it is, good luck with the protest for those organizing/participating, and stay safe to everyone - I'm sure tempers will be flaring.

      Subject: straight pride nonsense

Gay pride events are not an assault on straight people. Upcoming straight pride is the silliest retaliatory attempt to attack gay people. There is a difference. I hope that can be clearly seen. What if i had a protest with a sign that said "bring back slavery?" I highly doubt people would support such ignorance and this is an attempt by hateful jamaicans who should occupy their time by cleaning up their own hateful culture than trying to say killing gay people is acceptable lyrics for their musical tunes. Grow up people.

I can't wait to see how much overtime I get that weekend!

I hear there's going to be a white pride parade soon too.

Constitutionally protected? Of course. But still despicable.

      Edited for typo.

      wow

i am not going to go into a long winded reply because it will basically be preaching to the choir

      but what struck me most about this thread is how hard it hit me and how long i have been sitting here just pondering the implications;

hatred is such a core emotion

and it is such an ugly, ignorant, blind beast

the image carnivore posted really captures that
the further you go out on a limb, the harder it is to keep your balance
      balance is overrated

Hey, I just wanted to put it out there that if someone DOES want to organize a protest, I for one would seriously consider attending-- and so would a bunch of other neighborhood queers and their supporters. I know protesting is futile, etc., etc. but I don't know... I feel there is some value to a visible opposition here.

And I wonder too if they actually have a permit or not. Did anyone ever find out?

sweet tea » it's really just a press grab for a jackass record label.

which doesn't make me less pissed.

      ^^^^ this

I wouldn't give it five seconds worth of organizing or counterprotesting time, although I do hope Gay Pimp gets some press out of it...
    48. I looked at TCOOO's MySpace page the other day and it doesn't appear that anything further has been done on organizing this stupid parade, unless something further has been posted in the last day or two. I suspect they never got it together but didn't want to admit so publicly. If they are still doing it, they're not doing a great job of publicizing it.

Yah, actually I heard that the straight pride parade was on the down low.

      Ya know.

Last press release (I linked above) was August 19.
