Names of the victims and deceased are beginning to be released:

      Fatality A
      Suspect: Gabriel Hernandez, age 21
Deceased: name not yet released, age 26

      Fatality B
      Suspect: age and name unknown.
Deceased: Leandre Mallinckrodt, age not released

Note: There were additional incidents, some of which were covered in the press and some were not, but they do not appear to have resulted in fatalities.

WSJ » NEW YORK — The NYPD has arrested a suspect in one of two fatal stabbings in Brooklyn near the route where the West Indian American Day Parade had taken place.

The separate incidents took place after the parade along Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights had ended Monday.

Gabriel Hernandez of Brooklyn was arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man on St. John's Place.

It wasn't immediately known if the 21-year-old suspect had a lawyer.

The victim's name was withheld pending family notification.

In the second incident, a 27-year-old man identified as Leandre Mallinckrodt, of Monroe, N.Y., was killed at Eastern Parkway and Bedford Avenue. The investigation is continuing.

Police said both victims were stabbed in the neck.

I also had a wonderful, non-violent time, and (bourgie alert!) the FreshDirect guy who brought my grocery delivery last night agreed that it was - direct quote - "off the hook."

How does a parade that wants to attract and retain families and corporate sponsors deal with such an image?

Asking this in a spirit of honest inquiry - what can they do? All of this happened after the parade ended.

      Mishaps-
In the weeks before the parade, MHA, cremate, homeowner, CTK, et al and I kicked around some ideas on page 2 of this thread.

While I commend WIADCA for taking a lot of really positive steps this year to proactively protect the organization's reputation, the "culture" of West Indians, and everyone who attended the parade, I'd love to see them go even further next year and implement our ideas.

P.S. I also had a good time at the parade.

I went (but only for 15 minutes, I have a new baby at home), and did not get shot or stabbed!

That makes it three years that I've been living in Crown Heights, and going to the parade, and not getting shot or stabbed. Pretty impressive!

It does seem more and more pacified each year though, for better or for worse...

      Samuel-
I am glad to hear you are ok; the vast majority of us (more than 99.999% are...)

I think everyone hopes everyone has less of a chance of getting shot or stabbed next year.

After all, statistically this parade is safe ...right?

      2 deaths, plus about 10 injuries = 12

      12/2,000,000 =

If we wanted to make the numbers higher, we could add in folks who likely received pretty serious psychological injuries:

-Family and friends of the deceased and injured.

-People that are upset as a result of seeing blood everywhere, and/or were just missed by the assailants.

-Members of the WI community and others who will be forced to spend yet another year trying to explain that violence negatively represents individuals, yet Soca dancing, live concerts and Mas costumes positively represents the culture of an entire region of people. ...and that "a" should never be discussed in relation to "b", even though they consistently occur on the same day, every year, near Eastern Parkway.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Regarding: Folks who likely received pretty serious psychological injuries.

I'd like to add me and everyone else who unfortunately saw that old white lady inexplicably hanging out topless on the sidewalk during the parade. Some things can not be unseen.

    9. Ugh, four nights of events at the museum, a kiddie carnival, j'ouvert, and most of the parade itself all went off without incident. And when I left the Parkway just after 3pm yesterday I hoped we'd made it through without any serious violence ... then it all went wrong.

I'm no expert in parade planning, but I'm starting to think crowd dispersal is key for *this* parade since most incidents happen after it ends. The last truck left Schenectady at 3:30, so I was surprised that there was still a crowd at Bedford at the time of the stabbing.

The other thing I noticed, to comment on one of the ideas suggested earlier on this thread, was that there was zero enforcement of alcohol sales. Nutcrackers everywhere (not that I have a personal problem with that, but drunk knuckleheads are ruining it for all of us).

    10. And since I went to Kiddie Carnival for the first time this year, here are a few pic of the little ones getting ready.

    11. Here they are.

      Nice!

I am also pleased to state that Onya West (discussed on page 3) made it into the NYT's photo slideshow.

They are all good photos, but her's is number 8:

Photo from on top of speakers stacked on an 18 wheel truck. The distinction between people in the parade, and those merely watching it is lost .....despite the NYPD's efforts.

An account of fatalities and violence is in.

Assuming everyone in the hospital lives the number of fatalities is FOUR (4). I suspect that several more may have died had they not received EMS.

I'll look for reports that discuss the number of guns and weapons confiscated during the parade, J'ouvert, and the overall weekend in CH.

Has anyody mentioned the guy who was masturbating in the crowd and ejaculated on a stranger? He was immediately arrested.

And that's the way it is.

Yup, I posted about him back on page 3:

whynot » DNA Info has run lots of photos, and reports a very gross arrest:

While the first few hours of the parade seemed relatively calm, a reporter saw police arrest a man after witnesses said he ejaculated on a female parade-goer.

      The NYT is helpful:

NYT » This year, there were 29 arrests, and six guns were taken.

A response to an article in the PH Patch:

Joe Gonzalez » I was there in the immediate area of the above-referenced murder. I was standing on the north side of Eastern Parkway on Bedford Ave adjacent to the service road. Nearby was the fenced in area between the service road & the main parkway.

I saw the last flatbed truck in the parade which was surrounded by many thousands of persons & attempting a turn southbound on Bedford Avenue. There was sheer mayhem erupting at this time with hundreds stampeding about. I saw a 20 something man burst thru the crowd & make his way to the middle of the fenced in area; he held his neck area & I saw blood covering him from neck to stomach.

Immediately EMTs from the BedStuy Volunteer Ambulance Corp (BSVAC) began working to save him. I saw him lay on the ground trashing about wildly & as BSVAC staff attended to him. I saw he was no longer moving very much. Moments later NYPD vehicles & cops flooded the area & I could no longer see the guy. Then a wall of cops formed, nightsticks at the ready & folks were directed to walk westbound on Eastern Pkwy towards Franklin Ave.

I was among that crowd; once at Franklin Ave I saw another riot erupt & saw many cops rush into 327 Eastern Parkway later exiting with two men under arrest. I was in fear of my life as I saw no safe direction to travel. I stayed at that intersection for an extended period & then traveled north on Franklin Ave en route home. I saw all manner of mayhem on the intersecting cross streets. Its was beyond horrible.

...Its past time to closely examine the role of these oversized flatbed trucks in this "parade". The last truck in the parade took upwards of an hour to travel from Nostrand Ave to Bedford Ave--a mere one block away. The vast size of the crowd was worse than the subway rush hour. Folks were packed in and forced to remain in place.

The flatbed truck effectively ceased to be in a parade and basically became an outdoor concert. Its past time to seriously consider if vehicles ought be banned.from the parade to help smooth the flow of the parade traffic. There are other parades that have no vehicles--the St Patrick's Day Parade is one such example. Many folks will fall far back from the vehicles because they do not wish to smell the auto exhaust fumes. This creates huge gaps in the parade contingents which lengthens the parade time and inhibits movements of the crowds.

The parade route and the many participants were flooding the streets into night fall which is a disaster. Mind you the parade started at 11am and it was still ongoing at 7pm. I say something is wrong with this picture.

      And, a final photo:

      In my view,
this thread has now given the topic
      a pretty complete discussion.

      See you next year everyone!

It must have been some hellova party if you get stabbed twice and don't realize it until you get back to LI.
