I think that Crown Heights North is ready to embark on a house tour for Fall 2007. There has been a lot of support and encouragement from other tour groups who have been doing this for many years. We are all aware of the exterior architectural treasures, but home many of us have been in homes that have been recently restored and/or renovated? I have and I think many people would be pleasantly surprised!

Who decides which houses would be included and by what criteria?

Recently a House & Garden Tour Committe was formed (CHNA) and criteria and selection is still a discussion item. However, based on conversations with other House tour providers (i.e., Ft. Greene, Bed Stuy, etc.) there would be a review and selection team. The thing is to get interested homeowners first!

Hi mjp . Great! R U interested in showcasing your home and/or participating in any other way? Our next committee meeting is this Friday, 7:00 pm at my home. You can send me an e-mail for further details. Anyone else? We have to start somewhere.

Yeah, my house will be on the tour. But we want diversity in homes spread out in CHN. I presented at the St. Marks block association on Sat 11/18 about our 1st house tour and when I got to the part asking if they or anyone they know of may be interested in show casing their home, I literally was met with blank stares! What was on most attendees minds at that meeting was the crimes that have been going on lately. And these are not break-in crimes, but crimes on the street. People have short memories and tend to forget that Ft. Greene, Bed Stuy, Park Slope (around 5th Ave.) and parts of Clinton Hill were drug infested, crime ridden bastions during the 80's. Desptie that, people took back their communities by exhibiting the pride they had in preserving and restoring their brownstones, limestones, carriage houses, etc. and thus took control of their neighborhood by becoming a more open and visible community to those outside of the area. We are also embarking on that path and have begun the process already by continued positive media coverage of the landmarking effort and change is happening slowly but surely. Change is inevitable and is a fact of life and many of us are more than ready, willing and able to take the bull by the HORNS! If you have neighbors, friends that are in CHN talk to them about our (Crown Heights North House & Garden Tour Committee) mission ... which is:

      ]"To uncover the hidden and diverse jewels of Crown Hieghts North through it's architecture, ethnic diversity, culture and legacy" =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Our renovation should be completed by March 2007 and I would be interested in showcasing our home. I hope others on my block will do the same because there have been great renovations done.

Great!!!!!! We've been renovating too since last year (10/05 to be exact) and will be done by Spring 2007 as well. This is also a fantastic way to share renovation resources. If you can reach out to those other "renovators" on your block, that would be great. We can then make contact with them. Send me a pm email.

I noticed that a few of the beautiful row, and mansions along New York Ave, have been renovated. Particularly one between Park and Prospect Place. It used to be a school. Does anybody know who owns it and if they are interested in a tour. :

We plan on reaching out to as many homeowners as possible; particularly those who reside in homes of architectural interest. Regarding the house on NY Ave, I too remember when it used to be a school for "mentally challenged" kids. That property was renovated under a program with HPD and Neighborhood Housing Services. I believe it is currently owned by an African American couple whom I met sometime ago at a community meeting.

Any assistance anyone can provide regarding talking to neighbors who may be interested showcasing their home would be welcomed. We also plan to have at least 2 churches on tour as well.
