Which side of Nostrand? Not that it really matters, both sides (Nostrand/Rogers & Nostrand/New York) are okay. Two different vibes. Nostrand/Rogers is a block composed of 90% single family homes instead of apartment buildings. Its very quiet. The Nostrand/New York block has a lot more traffic as it has a number of apartment buildings, but still relatively a low-key block. Nostrand is safe now as the Dunkin Donuts on EP is open 24 hrs and often have police in there. The walk from the 3 at night is therefore, not too bad. Coming from the 2 & 5 the block is very quiet, but Crow Hill Bistro is open late most nights, and the bodega on the corner of Nostrand and Union is open late as well as the green grocer on the western side of the street. Once you get past the scaffolding on either side of the street all is well.

Just call it "Prospect Heights" and you're fine.

I agree with homeowner. This area has come sooooo far over the past two years. Superwings, Dunkin, the pizza place, etc. For boredom killing fun, go to the google street view. It is just a few years old, but shows how far it has come in just a few years. For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Just moved near union and nostrand myself (carroll and rogers). The area is really not bad at when it comes to safety (at least in my experience). Nostrand even has a couple decent places to eat and drink (crow hill bistro!). Rogers, on the other hand, is a barren wasteland. Late night there is a pretty solid police presence (which is good or bad depending on where you're from) and a station on franklin and carroll. Good trains as long as you're going to manhattan. The Franklin and President stops are both in mostly well lit and highly trafficked areas. Best of luck on your home hunt!

It's low-key and safe. There are always cops at the Dunkin Donuts, making it the safest place in the neighborhood. Frequently, there is a cop standing on the southeast corner of Union and Nostrand as well as cops stationed on Union & New York. The only gripe on Union between Nostrand & New York are the guys who loiter all day long when the weather gets nicer. They smoke, drink, etc all day long. But they don't directly harass or anything like that. The other huge plus is the fact that you are in between the 2, 3, and 5 (when it's running) trains.
