A lot of us are asking how we can address issues that especially plague our community. One response is to get involved as a volunteer with groups that are already making a difference. What groups need volunteers?Very un- "sivilized".

St. Gregory's Roman Catholic Church on Brooklyn and St. John's has a number of programs they run including a school, a goodwill shop and a home for the developmentally disabled. They also open their doors to a lot of other community groups such as the Crown Heights North Association (who runs the Crown Heights house tour) and provide them with space for meetings, etc. You may want to reach out to them to see about volunteer opportunities.

And don't forget our lovely Community Board 8 and the 77th Pct. Community Council. Attending the monthly meetings of either of the organizations will improve your knowledge of what's happening in the community. Especially important are the Housing and Economic Development committees of the Community Board. Many developers present information about their projects at the Housing committee meetings, especially if the project involves affordable housing or special needs populations. The Economic Development committee reviews all new requests for liquor and beer/wine permits, which means you learn of most new restaurants months before your neighbors! The full Board meeting monthly on the first Thursday of the month. Location varies. Check the website for the location: http://www.brooklyncb8.org/ The Housing committee meets on the 2nd Thursday at the Center for Nursing and Rehab on Classon bet. Park and Prospect. The Economic Development committee meets on the 2nd Tuesday also at CNR. CB 8 is on hiatus during July and August. The 77th Precinct Community Council meets on the 2nd Monday of the month. Location varies. Call the 77th Pct. for the location each month at 718-735-0634. The new commander, Capt. Capocci, has committed to being accessible and so far he seems to be keeping his word. Talk to him directly at any of these Council meetings.

Oops. CB 8 meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Housing is on the 1st Thursday. These dates were reversed in my previous email.

I'm sure that the men's shelter on Bedford and Atlantic could use volunteers.

Subject: Destination Nostrand
We have just announced a really big project that we are working on for Nostrand Avenue, and Crown Heights more generally. It's called "Destination Nostrand". Basically, we are going to create a Caribbean-away-from-the-Caribbean oasis on Nostrand Avenue, and we are looking for some dedicated volunteers. Drawing on Crown Heights’ unique Caribbean heritage, “Destination Nostrand” will be a Caribbean inspired pop-up outdoor plaza to be launched spring/summer 2011. For visitors, it will be a retreat to eat, socialize, shop, and relax. For participating local businesses, it will be an economic boon. Destination Nostrand shall feature a series of events and activities at this plaza featuring food, music, and art exhibits. Area merchants specializing in Caribbean items will have an opportunity to set up a table at the plaza to sell goods and merchandise. The plaza will be located on Nostrand Avenue. More details on Nostrand Park, and we have also posted more detailed descriptions on http://www.nycservice.org (search under 11216 or 11213 and you will find us). There is a big opportunity for big publicity for this event, so if you are interested in volunteering, let us know. We don't have it listed yet, but another volunteer position that we are looking for is a business outreach coordinator - someone to work with the merchants in the various commercial corridors and get the plugged into the project.Nostrand Park. Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Experience the Renaissance. http://www.nostrandpark.com
