I saw a guy taking down several panels of the Crow Hill Association mural around the construction site on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Franklin. Anybody know what's going on?

I saw the same thing -- I had assumed the panels had come down from the wind (that happened a while back before the panels were painted) but maybe not. I would be interested to know as well.

maybe there is a performance clause. You know saying something like once the permit is granted you have so many months to fabricate a building as per the designed plan...and no colorful poorly maintained plywood is not a building..or maybe the city is doing what you do when there are deadbeats everywhere..fill in the hole with rich brown dirt and make a safe park for kids..a couple of simple signs like all other parks to keep the dope out..no kid no entry..that graffitti coolness has run it;s course shit or get off the pot..also shovel the muthafuckin snow.cute plywood art only goes so far.

Yeah, I asked one of those guys yesterday. The bulk of the Eastern Parkway side blew down earlier in the afternoon and they were simply repairing it. Judging by the appearance of the 2x's that support the plywood, they don't have much life left in them. Not a bad run for a fence that's been up and down for more than 2 years now!
Just curious, seeing as the original concepts that were floated back then called for commercial spaces on the ground floor, what would people in the neighborhood like to see there? I think, simply out of laziness, I'd dig a Duane Reade... an idea that is bound to draw some ire from folks around town.
-
For a while, there was talk of both Walgreens and Starbucks as ground floor retail tenants with "luxury" condos and/or apartments above. That talk was looong time ago.
If you're happy, you're not paying attention.

I remember that talk well... before Breukelin (or whatever the faux nostalgic spelling is) Coffee House and Pulp and Bean opened up I was really looking forward to a quick cup of Joe from there on the way to the train in the morning. I was interested in finding out what people would LIKE to see on that corner. What's on people's minds and in their imaginations?

Come July, I'd like someone to fill it with water. It would make an excellent pool.

I agree with a Duane Reade -- I am very particular about certain things (The type of toothpaste I use, etc.) and so the places on Franklin now just don't cut it for me. I stop at the one on Utica and Empire a lot, but I wish there was one here.

^^ boring ^^^
He said we could use our imagination. To me, that means practicality need not apply.
In the winter, my pool would be an ice skating/fishing pond.

Thanks, Whynot.
What I, personally, would love would be just rows of picnic tables with charcoal grills at the end of each row. People could bring food/drinks and just have a place to sit outside and eat/drink. People could also grill there if they wanted. It would be like a beer garden but BYOB. Or a picnic area in the park without the 1/2mile walk to Prospect Park.

How about a ten story community garden?
Remember the Hanging Gardens of Bablyon? I do. They were really cool! -
These are exactly the types of conversations that banks should be having with developers. I'm curious how much their property taxes are for the pit. Are there different tax ratings for pits? Hmm.
Anyways, even simple ideas that repurpose the pit while maintaining it's future as a foundation for a building, could bring income to the owner and positive benefits to the community.
Pit parties, anyone?

I'd love to see a branch of the Bellagio erected here. Slots, table games, clubs, legalized marijuana and prostitution, and thrill rides on the roof would boost the local economy and create hundreds of jobs.
-
Jack, you could probably get Marty Markowitz to support that big time!!
-
No doubt, Marty and Elliot Spitzer could be counted on to write letters of support.
perhaps for a different age group: a skate park could also be built pretty quickly.

how about a below ground level amusement park for kids?

a giant wine cellar?

here's an aerial picture for those who don't know the site:
(it is the large patch of grey on the corner. The foundation was built, but nothing else.)

Jack, it looks like even a miniature version of that fountain would put the museum's to shame!

People pee on that fence often enough that the pit might not warrant an actual fountain. I do enjoy the wine cellar with playground above idea... parents AND kids both have something to be happy about!
-
Property taxes for undeveloped land are very cheap -- think a few thou a year for a lot that size. Carrying costs for a pit are almost nonexistent.
-
Pure fantasy here -- I really would love a gym right there, or a yoga studio.
I go to the drug store on classon and park place -- the Thriftway -- and everyone there is SO nice, so I would hate for a duane reed to come in.
-
Actually, whynot, I read that the fountain in front of the brooklyn Museum was designed by the same firm that created the Bellagio fountains. (But sadly can't find the reference right now.)
-
Jack and Booklaw,
It seems the owner of a proposed gentleman's club in Park Slope in is desperate need of good advice and reference letters.
