I remember reading a while back about a clever con-man giving Oscar-worthy performances in the 'hood. I'm pretty sure he struck again last night, with me being the audience.

He approached me on Classon Ave between St. Marks and Bergen by asking if I knew of any towing services in the area. I apologized and said that I did not, and he launched into this amazing story of how his mother had a stroke whilst driving just a couple blocks away, and hit some pedestrians on the sidewalk. At this point, he began crying because she was taken to a hospital downtown, is in a coma, and his health insurance doesn't cover her. He added really clever, subtle details like how he's some sort of engineer, how he has a wife and daughters, how the cops were hurling racial slurs at him after the accident, how the news crews were filming the accident right now, etc. He really painted a picture for me. He even told me he lives in 713 Classon (Jewish Hospital, Classon side), apartment 202. That took some balls. I live in that building, so I'm tempted to go give 202 a knock just for shits and giggles.

So, eventually he told me he was $12 short for the tow truck, and asked if I could spare that much. I'm well aware of the "seemingly random number trick" when asking for money, and I also remembered back to the beginning of his story when he asked me if I knew of a towing service. Why would he need $12 to pay the remainder of a towing bill if he hadn't even found a towing service yet?

So, keep your ear to the ground. This guy is about 6' or so, maybe a few inches taller. He's thin/black/seemingly well put together/wearing white sneakers, a beige jacket, and had a backpack on. Does that sound like the guy who was hitting people up a few months ago?

      Sorry for the long-ass post.

P.S. If anyone on here actually DOES live at 713 Classon, Apt 202, and you don't mind hundreds of strangers knowing where you live, speak up. I'd be interested to know for sure that this guy was full of shit.

Oh yeah, that's the conartist that's been around for a few years. Almost identical story as the last time someone brought it up.

Shit, there must been at least 3 threads on this guy, one with a picture of him. He has balls, I'll give him that.

Friend of mine was coming over for dinner and she was approached by this same guy! I think she was on Fulton and Carlton and he gave her the same shpiel, but used landmarks in this area instead. He even said he knew where an ATM was and that he would go with her! Yeesh. She didn't give him any cash but said that she felt really bad for him and was wondering if she did the right thing. It had all the trimmings of a con, so I assured her she made the right decision.

I'll have to send this post to her!

When I was a kid on the Upper West Side, I used to hear the "I'm short on bus fare, I was mugged and I'm just short (x amount) dollars to get the bus back to Philly", complete with tears and the whole shabang. I remember being dismayed that my mom didn't help this 20 something girl, only to hear this woman giving the same shpiel about 6 months later. 10 points for mom!

If I'm not mistaken, I think there's a provision in the Penal Law that allows you to punch him square in the face.

KWAC, does the penal law specify that Karma must be involved?

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

my girlfriend and i also ran into this guy when we first moved to St. Marks Ave and Classon. We were approached in August on St. Marks and Underhill and he gave us the same story, except in his story he said the cops were calling him a dumb n****r and threatening him or something like that. Too bad the guy can't con his way into getting a real job instead of bothering people that won't believe his stupid story. I think i even asked him where the "accident" was so i could go and scope it out...i walked by there and of course...nothing happening.

      my old friend oliver harris!

definitely stay away from his mother's car -- she's forever having strokes and mowing down pedestrians. it's a wonder she maintains a license.

While I do admire that thorough analysis of this guy's shpiel, I would like to give you a word of advice which I trust will serve you as well as it's served me:

Anyone in this city who (1) approaches you on the street, and; (2) asks for money, regardless of whether they're giving you a two-hour long sob story, aggressively selling $5 boxes of M&M's for a "basketball team," asking you to put a dollar into a water cooler bottle "to help the homeless," or even just jingling a cup, is a CON-ARTIST. That includes the regular Park Slope bums who sit in front of Key Food and the Korean delis (who I know for a fact make more in a day than most working people in this city, and spend it on drugs and/or alcohol).***

      One example: http://georgeweberthenewsguy.blogspot.com/2008/06/scam-united-homeless-organization.html

Best thing to do is simply look them sternly in the eyes and say "Sorry man, just lost my job"--"Today's not a good day" etc.

***The only exceptions to this rule may be the Salvation Army, those with missing limbs, and that tall lanky black guy who hangs out in front of the supermarket on Berkeley Place (he's alright).
