I have one of those mini split air conditioners and today I noticed a smell coming out. I recognized the smell right away to be a dead mouse (living in NY you learn to identify that smell right away). Does anyone have any idea how long the smell persists? I took apart the unit as much as I can but could not find the mouse.

The more you run it, the faster he dries out and stops smelling, days or a week maybe. More importantly you should try to determine how he got in there. Either you have a ductless air handler attached to the wall which might indicate an exterior opening or maybe you have duct work (insulated) attached to the air handler which could mean an internal breach. I'd call Janet Napolitano.

I have access to a mouse-infested upstate house on occasion. We put down poison when we leave on Sunday night, and find that if we return the following weekend the house smells of poisoned, decaying mice.
However, if we return 2 weekends later, the smell is largely gone.
Disclaimers:
The elapsed time between when we put the poison down and when the mice eat the poison and die is unknown.
The mice seem to eat the poison and then die in the walls, rarely do we get to see skeletons. It is unknown whether a mouse decays quicker in a upstate wall in air conditioner in Brooklyn.
....Surely there must be federal grant money available to research this further.For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor. -
