Good eve. I'm a recent law school grad who'll be working in ny this summer at a firm in battery park. I looking to live in bk but don't want to pay out the nose and i'd like stay in a neighborhood with both a neighborhood feel and a lot of culture.

i lived in park slope last summer and it was a little too young couple for me. i've heard mixed things about bed-stuy. some say it's fine, others say it's too hood. I'm not too worried about that, I'm from CO but i've lived all over and think for the most part, i can handle myself cool.

What's the scoop on bed-stuy? pros, cons? particular parts that are cool, particular parts that are not?

      any help is appreciated.

I just brought a house in Bedford Stuyvesant so I have invested everything I own in this area. I also lived in Park Slope but for 5 years. I not a fan of the whole area. I the area where I am in the south of the neighborhood. Bedford Stuyvesant between Madison and Fulton bounded by Malcolm X and Bedford Ave is the area of the neighborhood that I really like. The area is very block by block. I like MacDonough, Halsey, Macon, Decatur, Bainbridge, Stuyvesant Arlington, Verona, Putnam, Jefferson and Hancock Streets. Some of those streets I like more than others. I like Putman closer to Stuyvesant and I like Macon and Halsey closer to Bedford. You really have to walk the area and get a feel for what you like...
    3. Welcome howard, there have been quite a few excellent posts over the past year or two discussing various subsections of that giant neighborhood known as Bed-Stuy.

      Look back and enjoy!

I live on Hancock b/x Marcus Garvery & Throop (pronuonced Troop) and I love my street. It's quite, beautiful, and extremely diverse. We also have a private garden and it's a nice additional to the neighborhood.

      Good luck with your move.

      Hi Howard,

I've been living in the North-West part of BedStuy (several blocks from the Bedford-Nostrand G stop) for more than six months. I like the G train in spite of its reputation because I can take it either North to switch to the L train or South to switch to the A/C lines.

Pros: The architecture, the light in a sunny day dressing the brownstones in a golden cloth, the tree lines, the Thompkins park, YMCA, Tiny Cup cafe, Le Toukouleur restaurant, the HomeDepot, the Keyfood supermarket and above all the very nice neighbors who has been helping us integrate in the neighborhood.

Cons: The unfriendly neighbors who apparently are not happy to see newcomers. Where I used to live, people were indifferent, meaning they will not say hello to you or even pay attention to you. But at least they were not giving us nasty looks. Here some people are truly super nice, some others are truly super unfriendly. You choose your battle. I would say that overall the nice people make it worth it.

Another cons would be the lack of stores. However I am very confident that it will change.

      Hope this helps.

Welcome to the neighborhood if you decide to move in.

...You know, being estatic that you "haven't seen a white person" is to my mind the very opposite of "being normal and irie". Haile Selassie I himself condemned this kind of racism before the UN.

Are you living in Bed-Stuy or Babylon?

how many times I gotta tell you only white people can be racist and yes I am ECSTATIC.

      all Amerikkka is Babylon

your incessant whitey defending only makes our case even stronger. why can't you just relax and enjoy life? not everyone is going to like you in this world just like not everyone is going to like me. deal with it tis a part of life.

if I ran around tripping over every person who doesn't smile at me or gives me a screwface or sucks their teeth I would be a pretty stressed out and miserable person.

...I'm not the one who gets fed up if someone from a different race is in my neighborhood. I'm not the one who's angry if they see someone from another race. I'm not the one who went out of their way to find a place to live where everyone looked exactly the same. I'm fine living anywhere and with anyone. It sounds like you AREN'T.

Which is the person who REALLY needs to learn how to relax?

      1) Selassie was a pretty horrible dictator. Ask anyone from Eritrea. You never cease to amuse me. Nice try but you fail again.

      2) There is a difference between some people of different races and a hostile takeover of a neighborhood which is what happened to Fort Greene. The few white folks who were there before were mad cool and were a part of the community and blended in. These new ones walk around like they own it and make everyone else feel very unwelcome and I am by no means the only one who says it. GET IT NOW?

      3) As for my move I went where I could get the space I want for a decent price and feel happy relaxed and comfortable. I the new kid on the block now and I most def am not trying to impose my way of life on anyone nor interfere with theirs nor am I walking around looking down upon people. I just chilling making friends not enemies. If the Fort Greene new whiteys would have behaved like that people wouldn't have the level of animosity towards them that they have now.

Bet you I live in a nicer apt than you and it most certainly is not in the projects. Haha I in a beautiful exquisitely renovated landmark brownstone garden apt with a huge yard. You and your arrogant ignorance are a classic example of the hostile takeover people. You stay amongst your people and get ripped off on rent, mediocre restaurants and all the rest. Yes I am OVERJOYED not to have to pass you on the road. As for the few whites in Bed Stuy they behave themselves and have humility unlike you. Karma a real mofo. I wish you the best of luck WD.

      * Selassie is also the founder of Rastafarianism. So if you denounce him but drop the "irie" and "Babylon" talk, then I guess that you're just a poser.

      * Do you know what race I am?

      * I moved to Ft. Greene for precisely the same reason. Do you know how I behave in the neighborhood? Are you even interested in finding out, or have you already made up your mind about me? If you have -- what have you based your opinion of me upon? Do you think that that's enough to form an accurate opinion?

Go back to your caucasoid cave you neanderthal cave dweller.

      Learn something first :

The Holy Piby And Other Important Books In Rastafari Theology

The Holy Piby is probably the most important book in Rastafarian Theology. Other books that are important for Rasta Theology are the "King James's Bible" ; "The Royal Parchment Scroll Of Black Supremacy", "The Promised Key" and the "Kebra Negast". Below are brief descriptions of all these books.

      The Holy Piby

The Holy Piby, published in 1924 (Newark, New Jersey), is an occult bible which was allegedly translated from "Amharic". The Piby emphasizes the destruction of white "Babylon" and the return of the Black Israelites to Africa which is the true Zion. It is also known as the "Black Man's Bible". It was quickly adopted by Rastafarians as one of their foundation books for Theological references in the sect.

One Chapter of the book also pays tribute to Marcus Garvey who was one of the most prominent black men fighting for civil rights during the time of publication.

The "Holy Piby" was complied 1913-1917 by its author Robert Athlyi Rogers (Shepherd Robert Athlyi Rogers), who was born in Anguilla. He committed suicide on 24th August 1931. Many Rastafarians say he "took himself away from this life" versus saying he committed suicide when referring to his death.

Below is an excerpt from the Holy Piby Chapter 2.

"Holy Piby Chapter 2 page 23 First Paragraph -"And it came to pass that God gave his name Elijah, and he called upon the name of the Lord God even though he himself was God. Now when the time had appeared for God to return, the supreme angel commanded the chariot of heaven to meet him. And when the chariot appeared unto Elijah, he ascended and returned to his throne in heaven where he reigned from the beginning and shall unto the end, King of kings and God of gods."

Okay, I'll admit I was incorrect about the details of Selassie's involvement with Rastafarianism. But irie and babylon do have something to do with Selassie -- because Rastafarians regard Selassie as the Messiah.

      But that's okay -- a dilettante wouldn't know that.

Not a mod, but would like to note that the name calling is no good here. Besides the fact that it totally destroys any point one is attempting to make.

Now there's an idiot you don't see everyday. I lived all over the world including Haiti and there is no proof this person is from Haiti based on their comments. As a matter of fact based on the terminology I would say s/he is from the US Virgin Islands, Bahamas or Antigua.

Secondly, it's funny how you associate Haiti with uneducated and racist. Haiti has beaten the USA in Math and Science scores for junior high school and high school age children for almost 20 years!

. . . . and of course if you think this person is racist ... what does your statement make you?

While I would be loath to ever defend this country's math and science record, citing Haiti as an example of successful education is a bit much. Even if the statistic you cite is correct, what percentage of the school age population attends high school? And of that how many take the test?

I'll freely admit ignorance as to education in Haiti. A quick web search indicates from a few sources that it is pretty bleak, although definitely making great strides forward in about the last fifteen years. Care to elaborate? I'm always happy to learn about something new.

I am sorry? Your response makes no sense. What is the answer to my question? Obviously if in the US 95% of teenagers are in school while in Haiti only 10% are, you can't really compare their test results as being representative of anything.

But why do I bother. My mother says "leave the trolls alone."

Where in the hell do you get the idea that only 10% of Haitian kids are in school???!!! On top of that if you claim that 95% of US kids are than it is an even worse look for the US. Get your facts straight before you post.

Sigh. Do you even understand my question? You asserted something. I am asking you to back it up. I myself have no idea of what percentage of Haitian teenagers are in school. But if only the elite attend high school and take tests in Haiti ( a reasonable supposition, no?) then it is unfair to compare a supposed higher test result there (which I am not sure I believe - do you have a cite for that?) to a much broader group going to school and taking tests in this country.

I am sorry 20% of age appropriate teens attend secondary schools:

      http://www.buildingwithbooks.org/intra/Intl_Programs/profile_Haiti.html

Although public education is free in Haiti, the cost is still quite high for Haitian families who must pay for uniforms, textbooks, supplies, and other inputs. Due to weak state provision of education services, private and parochial schools account for about 90% of primary schools, and only 65% of primary school-aged children are actually enrolled. At the secondary level, the figure drops to around 20%. Less than 35% of those who enter will complete primary school. Although Haitians place a high value on education, few can afford to send their children to secondary school. Today, primary school enrollment is also dropping due to economic factors. 60 percent of rural households suffer from chronic food insecurity, and food must come before education.

With an adult illiteracy rate of 52% (48% of males are illiterate and 52.2% of females are illiterate), education remains a key obstacle to economic and social advancement in Haiti.

It's MUCH better in Haiti and the rest of the Caribbean so yes it was a waste of time and UNICEF is a biased source. Try again. MOST Haitian children attend school and excel far beyond US students. You fail once again.

Feel free to share your information about the educational system in Haiti. The sources I found mostly echo the UNICEF info that was posted.

Less than 15 percent of Haitian children ages 6 to 11 are enrolled in public school -- one of the lowest rates, if not the lowest rate in the world, according to the World Bank's Sam Carlson, who is working with the Haitian government and other international bodies to achieve the millennium education goal. Non-public institutions fill some of the gap, but still most Haitian children do not make it to sixth grade.

      http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=34657

Haiti's education sector suffers from weaknesses in virtually all aspects, including access, equity, quality and institutional capacity. Approximately 500,000 children aged 6-11 do not attend school of any kind, and only about half of all six year olds enroll in first grade.

For years, Haitian schools have suffered from lack of resources and trained staff. Less than 70 percent of children attend primary school, and a fraction of those will go on to complete high school and college. One of the reasons is that the cost of schooling can be high for many families in Haiti, where public funding supports only about 10 percent of the nation's 15,000 primary schools.

BTW I am NOT Haitian so your assault on Haiti is pure tragicomedy to the extent that I have shared the link all over and the whole world is shaking their heads and laughing at you same time. The US $ the most unwanted $ in the world right now. Chew on that and figure out how you will get your damn brie cheese when this continues for a while....

This is pointless. I hope you have had fun. We have responded to you assuming you are an adult with coherent thoughts. Since that has proven not to be the case, would you mind getting off this site? Many of us use it to share information, have reasonable debates, and work to making our communities a better place. Those who know nothing about rastafari should NOT speak on it.

And yet you keep coming back. Fascinating.

Look bitch don't tell me how to speak. I can say irie and babylon all i want and it doesn't have a damn thing to do with selassie.

Okay, I'll admit I was incorrect about the details of Selassie's involvement with Rastafarianism. But irie and babylon do have something to do with Selassie -- because Rastafarians regard Selassie as the Messiah.

      But that's okay -- a dilettante wouldn't know that.[/quote]

Open invitation for those who _do_ know something about rastafari and/or the Haitian education system to speak up. I'd love to learn something about either topic, other than y'all don't know what you're talking about, the media is brainwashing you, etc.

Not to be too gentrific, but why would Whites move into a nabe that's 95% ethnic? The prices in Brooklyn Heights/Carroll Gardens/DUMBO too astronomic? How would you feel living in a section of city that most people outside of it wouldn't want to be caught speeding in, let alone live there? And now it's become 'fashionable' to buy out the best brownstones and brick faces while the people who've lived there for generations are forced to relocate because the Yuppie/Gen X pop culture need to stretch their horizons? It would be cool to live shoulder to shoulder...Micks, Spics, Wops, Bunnies...and not ever having to hear those ethnic slurs because we're truly one people. But skin color has f***ed up our heads so bad we can ever get past it.

So here we are...people born and raised in The Stuy forced to move so that the mighty Whitey with money honey can live comfortably and commute easily to his/her comfy job on Park Ave, Mad Ave or Wall St...where People Of Color are few and far in between.

Hey, come on down to Brownsville or out to ENY where for a few dollars less you can live in even less gentrification.

      Peace

OK My point was totally missed. I was trying to point out how the person accusing the carribean guest of bein racist is not only an idiot but racist his/herself by making such a statement about Haiti.

      That being said ...

Math and science scores around the word beat the USA by leaps and bound. Any country that has had 400 years of free labor should NEVER fall behind in any area. That's like a runner (most of the rest of the world) giving his opponent (USA) a headstart at the 3/4 mile mark and beating the opponent.

      Here is a quote:

In math, only four countries had average scores lower than the United States. Students in 23 countries had a higher average score, and those in two countries did about the same as the Americans.

Personally, because I'm living on ~$1,300/mo and yah, BH/CG/DUMBO are too much. I don't really give a crap what people living outside the area think about it. I didn't move here to be near all the ethnic stuff, but it is interesting and I don't dislike it. I think it sucks that it is becoming fashionable, because it means that I will need to move again soon. Last years rent increase was bad enough, with the new one they just approved, I'm probably at the end of my rope.

Yep, that is pretty sad. I would point out that those results are for the thirty most industrialized countries, and don't include Haiti or any Caribbean nation, for that matter. By which I don't mean that Caribbean educations suck, because I am admittedly ignorant on the topic. But what you cited doesn't support your point.

Further, about the world scores beating the US by "leaps and bounds," I'll buy that on the math, where the US got 24th out of thirty. On science they were 17th out of thirty though, which I would say puts them squarely into "average" territory.

Which isn't to say that I don't agree with you that there is absolutely no reason the US shouldn't be leading, or _at least_ in the upper half.
