i'm trying to get from ft. greene (lafayette & fulton area) to prospect park west and 9th on my bike and i'm looking at the bike map and don't see any route with any kind of bike lane to get me through that tricky fulton/flatbush area. i'm new to riding a bike and i'm looking for the least scary/difficult way to do it. does anyone have any recommended routes for this journey? i'm having trouble seeing how i can avoid riding on flatbush... i'm thinking maybe vanderbilt to grand army plaza? any thoughts? i'm scared! thanks!

vanderbilt sounds right. Once you get to GAP, it's every man for himself though!

Go up Vanderbilt to Park, take Park to Underhill, Underhill to EP, use the crosswalks to get across EP and Flatbush and then you can cut through the park or ride up PPW whichever you prefer. Frankly, I don't even like Vandy now that they narrowed it to one lane.

I'm similarly skittish...I ride from Clinton & Myrtle to the park and back a lot, and what I prefer to do is take Waverly down to Atlantic, I walk the bike across Atlantic, and then go up Underhill to Eastern Parkway; that puts you right near the library. I actually walk the bike again across Eastern Parkway, around the library, and across that street to the entrance to the park. From there you'd just take Prospect Park West down to 9th Street. Sometimes I also go up Vanderbilt, but I take the last right at the end of Vanderbilt -- I think it's Park Place; there's a one-way traffic circle going around Grand Army Plaza, but it's got a bike lane on it. I get to the corner of Union, walk through that funky intersection, and up to Prospect Park West and then ride again. From Clinton/Myrtle it takes me about 20 minutes, allowing for all the walking and my slower pace up hills (I'm slightly wimpy). Also I figure that because I'm still very skittish about riding through Atlantic, then walking is the best bet, because better to walk my bike and be slower than to be jumpy and twitchy and nervous, and end up panicking and doing something that would cause bigger problems. -
you said u were near lafayette fulton area. take south portland cross atlantic ave stay straight cross flatbush to 6th ave to 9th st make a left and take to prospect park west

queen, thanks! it sounds like we are very similar. i will try your suggestions. arlette, thanks to you, too. re: your suggestion, i thought that, on that route, the street between atlantic and flatbush (the one that goes past the police station) was one way? am i wrong? if not, you are right, that seems like a simple way to do it. what way would you take on the return trip? fyi i chickened out last night because the road was wet and i didn't want to ride at night on a route i hadn't ridden before on what would have been only my second bike ride.
