Dear Brooklynian Community,
The Hattie carthan After Church market has begun its recruitment for the 2012 market basket season.! We invite your participation in our weekly basket program this year and hope that you see this as a valuable opportunity to participate in and support local small scale agriculture in Bedford Stuyvesant. Supporting local small scale farmers in your community is ultimately a bonafide way to grow your connection to your food and place.
The Hattie Carthan After Church Mixed Basket Program program offers participants 5 varieties of local fruits and vegetables along with farm fresh herbs and eggs at a discounted price. Pickup for the Sunday basket happens each Sunday between 2pm and 3pm at the young farmers market located at 49 Van Buren Place between Tompkins and Throop. Unlike a traditional CSA, Mixed Basket participants enrolled in our weekly basket program pay on a monthly basis as we understand that large upfront costs may be prohibitive to the participation of some community members. We also happily accept alternative forms of payment such as: food stamps (EBT), SFMNP, WIC, Healthbucks and Freshchecks. Most importantly, participants enjoy a relationship with local urban farmers, food educators, youths and community members that keep the Hattie Carthan legacy alive in Bedford-Stuyvesant and can rest-assured that the food they are taking home is grown in an environment that is free of pesticides and exploitation. To sign on to our basket program please fill an application here: http://www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.com/#!__mixed-basket . Please mail completed applications to Yonnette Fleming; 619 Willoughby Avenue, Floor 2 Brooklyn, NY 11238 or email to hattiecarthancommunitymarket@yahoo.com. Applications are due by July 1st, 2012
To learn more about our community revitalization efforts which resulted in the conversion of an abandoned lot on Clifton place into a farmers market in 2009 and a second lot into a thriving herb farm and market in 2011, please visit our website and read our market reports at http://www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.
We thank you in advance for supporting our food justice work in the Bedford Stuyvesant community.
