      Here are my spots:

      1) The halal buffet on Fulton between Bedford and Franklin with the international flags on the awning. Impeccably clean and they have a separate vegetarian side. Delicious veggies of all types and a bunch of different soy and tofu dishes.

      2) Bush Baby on Fulton and Bedford. Nice panini style wraps and salads with alot of vegan options. About $7 for a huge wrap.

      3) Melanie's Trini restaurant/juice bar on Fulton near Nostrand next to Carver Bank. Again, a whole separate vegetarian side with MANY options and great juices.

      4) Ali's roti shop on Fulton between Nostrand and Bedford. Shrimp or veggie dalphourie roti is to die for. Great doubles too.

      5) Brook's Valley but I know you already talk about it alot on here. Real good for true.

      6) Doubles king on Nostrand and Macon for when I in a hurry and Ali's line too long.

      7) Sugar Hill on DeKalb and Nostrand when I wanna get my soul food on.

Solomon's Porch on Stuyvesant and Halsey when I want to vibe nice.

As for buying food to cook, my main spot is the Korean/West Indian produce market on Fulton between Nostrand and NY as well as the fish market next door. Both the Bravo next door and the Key Food on Nostrand and Monroe are real good for basics. Bravo even has some fancy things like stock in a box for good prices. I HATE Restoration Plaza Foodtown with a passion.

So anybody got any other spots?

Thanks for the list. I live on Marcus Garvey and Madison and I saw a new fish monger opened up recently on Fulton and Marcus Garvey. It seemed REALLY clean and the fish seemed to be fresh. I haven't bought anything yet. I need to get on that before they go out of business. :-p

i was so excited to stumble upon Bush Baby when i first moved into Bed Stuy, unfortunately every time i have attempted to eat there they are always out of some crucial ingredient (bread par example) or 'oh, we don't serve sandwiches until 3pm' (isn't that bizarre?) or something else equally annoying. there seems to be nice people running the place, excellent atmosphere etc, but i can't go there anymore because i feel like an idiot giving the place so many chances.

i wanted to support a vegetarian friendly, black owned brooklyn restaurant so BADLY.

anyway, Brook's Valley is def on my agenda.

Sugar Hill has been there for years. It started out as a small bar which is still on the DeKalb side of the property. Then the owner brought the building on the corner and opened a club which has been there since the 70's. In the late 90's he decided to open the restaurant so he redid the upstairs and opened the soul food place.

I heard that he ran into some difficulties in the past couple of years. Some of the Hasidim in Williamsburg approached him to purchase the building and a few other properties he owns on the DeKalb block. He declined and after several hard-sell approaches I heard that they finally backed off.

Not too long afterwards, he was visited by several city agencies saying they had received complaints about the business. Last I heard, the State Liquor Authority had been there, the Health department, Sanitation, Consumer Affairs and a couple of others. I try to patronize when I can because it would be a shame to see a business that was sucessful for all of those years disappear as the result of a land grab.

That is how people are forcing people out of business if they refuse to sell. Going to buildings dept and govt agencies and making claims of violations.

Also to get your soul food on...try Royal Ribhouse on Halsey between Throop and Marcus Garvey. Open Thurs to Saturday with take out only.Always a line but worth the wait.

Sugar Hill - the food is generally good but the service can be hit or miss depending on the waiter. My family goes there for Sunday brunch every couple of weeks.

Peaches (on Lewis and MacDonough in the old Bassam/Akwaaba spot) - Just opened. Good food and service MUCH improved from the Bassam era. No liquor license yet.

Royal's Ribs - looks rundown passing by but the ribs (and fish) are amazing.

Does anyone know what's going on in the old MacDonald's Diner space on the corner of Macon and Stuyvesant?

It's on the north side of Fulton and has visible buffet stations from the window.

We like 2 restaurants closer to us, Kush and Au Tour du Monde. Both are French and both are really good.

^ i have yet to step into Kush but i have heard tons and tons of amazing things about it from a hard to please food snob -- so i'd recommend it just based on that, as well.
    17. We've been to Kush once and absolutely loved it. Very diverse and creative menu at affordable prices.

htanks for trying to be helpful, but every halal buffet on fulton street seems to have visible buffet stations from the window : ( so i still can't identify this restaurant.

i feel really annoying for asking again -- but does anyone know what SPECIFIC shops this restaurant sits between? or something else that is more specific to identify this place?

Hmm I think the international flags have been gone for a while and the awning is red now. All those places are good. The yellow awning, the red awning and the one with no awning. I usually browse thru all of them and see which one has more stuff I want on that day.

      Subject: veg/non-veg soul take-out

Can anyone tell me which places are current? The posts are old but this area is not well documented even now, and there is always so much turn over. I'm near the Nostrand A and planning to get both veggie and non-veggie yummy soul/carib takeout for a last-minute get-together with friends tomorrow. I pass places, but as I cook and rarely take-out or go out around home I don't have experience to say what little hidden spots are fabulous. All cafeteria style places slightly worry me and without guidance it is difficult to know if they are good until you try (I don't want to experiment on my friends... I'll save that for myself another time :))

The next-door relationship of D'Ital and Royal Rib House seems ideal for the opposite eating habits. Anyone know for sure if they are both still there or otherwise have a nearby delicious recommendation that would suit both the rib-eaters and the soyeaters? I've seen lots of praise for both IMHOTEP and Brooks Valley (does Brooks Valley do take-out or allow BYO?), but if doing takeout I definitely need a place that will knock my BBQ/rib/wing loving friend's socks off too. Recommendations?

I really like Melanie's right by the train at Nostrand. The roti is good and I like the fact that they have soy options. The doubles shop on Nostrand between Fulton and Macon is great, too, but they are only open during the day.

I second Jah. The halal places on Fulton between Bedford and Franklin all seem to be pretty good, my favorite is the one that was closed for several months while they renovated about a year ago. I believe that's the one with the red awning but I could be mistaken. It's the second halal spot in from Bedford on the south of the street.

Also, an emphatic YES to Kush. They have my favorite brunch and they are so sweet and lovely. Autour Du Monde is an underrated gem, too. I wish more people knew how that place is because I never see anybody in there when I go by. The owner and his wife are wonderful.

Kings County BBQ is great, too, on Franklin and, I believe, Quincy. Darn good BBQ served by nice people.

Le Toukeleur (French/African) is tasty, on Bedford and Quincy. Sadly, another spot that never seems to have anybody dining in, but the service and food are both excellent. I hope they can stick around.

I agree with what you said about Le Toukouleur. The problem is that their prices are high for the neighborhood. They should consider updating them or offering incentives such as free cocktails.

i could be wrong, i'm not a native, but is NY even known for bbq and ribs? i don't think bbq is NY's shtick. i suppose there's always Dallas BBQ [http://www.dallasbbq.com/], though that's not in the neighborhood.

Great BBQ: Smoke Joint. Not in Bed-Stuy, but in Fort Greene. Trust me, it's great.

Also great, in Williamsburg: Fette Sau.

It's true we are not known for our BBQ historically, but these two establishments are working very hard to change that.

The Smoke Joint blows Fette Sau away. Plus, SJ has terrific sides and Fette Sau is super limited. Good bourbon choices, tough.

Wow. I could not disagree more. Only been to each place twice, but on every count, Fette Sau crushes Smoke Joint, imho. Might need to do back-to-back comparisons on this one, but I love everything about Fette Sau, from how you order to how you sit to how your beer comes to how insanely good their pork belly is.

Personal preference I guess, I'll just try Smoke Joint again. Soon!

I have to agree with the bbc on this -- Fette Sau does the pork right. I bet it depends (as does all BBQ) on what you like.

At Fette Sau we got takeout for across the street, Spuyten Duyvil: pork belly and some sausages and it was fantastic. Juicy fantastic, pig candy fantastic.

My friend who likes beef dinosaur ribs drags me to Smoke Joint; everything I've tried (like pulled pork sandwich) is just . . . okay. I'm happy they're around, but it's not spectacular if you're a Carolina pork lover looking for something special.
