Hi everyone! I've really enjoyed this forum and am excited to be moving to Clinton Hill on Sunday. Well, actually, I just think it's Clinton Hill. It's on Waverly between Myrtle and Park. Anyways...do any of you know of a decent gym in the area? Doesn't have to be anything fancy, and I'm looking more for cardio/weights than yoga/pilates. Thanks!

Hello... This is more Fort Greene than Clinton Hill, but there is a Crunch Fitness on Fulton Street and Ashland Place...I've been going there quite a while and like working out there. It can get a little busy for the cardio machines, tho.... Hope this helps... -
No, you live in Wallabout, west of the border of Clinton Hill.

Guest: come on, she is not nearly in ft greene--why would you say that?

Thanks, guys. It really looks like my choices are the before-mentioned Crunch or the YMCA in Bedstuy. Both are good choices, just a bit further off than I'd hoped for. It's ok, as I'm more idealistic as I am motivated. I've been in NYC for only four years now and I'm more excited about my new neighborhood than I have been for any of my past (Greenpoint, Kew Gardens, Queens, and most recently Williamsburg). I'm sure I'll find something suitable. I also purchased a bike this past weekend that I'm just learning to ride without meeting pavement...that's cardio, right? ;o)

I think what the guest was saying is that the GYM is in Fort Greene... not the location of UrbanCowgirl's apartment. The apartment is clearly in Clinton Hill (or Wallabout if you would like to argue). But I, for one, would like to welcome you to the Clinton Hill community. -

UrbanCowgirl, do you work in Manhattan? It might be worth joining a gym near your office instead of near your apartment.

My girlfriend and I use the YMCA gym in downtown Brooklyn on Atlantic Ave. For $60 a month it's good and clean and accessible via multiple buses (B54, B61), or the subway.Spend a buck, light a number for one the 400,000 victims in Darfur: darfurwall.org

i got the crunch membership that allows you to go to any of their 15 NYC locations... definitely convenient.

Pardon my ignorance, but how is Wallabout geographically defined? I rarely hear people mention it. It seems like I've heard a lot of people describe the area that the OP mentioned as simply Clinton Hill.

I think "Wallabout" - which is still in the process of being officially established, to my understanding -- is the mile-long stretch north of Myrtle, running along the Navy Yard and the BQE between Flushing and Park. Some put the south border down as far as Myrtle. And ultimately, I think that's the thing with all of these neighborhood boundaries -- where exactly the official boundary is sometimes depends on which realtor you're talking to. -
bedstuy Y is way to overcrowded now.. sucks!! now a gentrified Y

yeah, going to a gym with middle class newcomers totally makes it hard to get a good work outSpend a buck, light a number for one the 400,000 victims in Darfur: darfurwall.org

Hi, I only say Wallabout because I used to live on Clinton Ave between Park & Myrtle
Technically, CH does not extend beyond Myrtle.
Regarding gyms, I had a dream (really) that a new gym opened on the stretch near the Associated on Myrtle & Hall.
I wish the New York Y's had better websites with available classes, etc. The Atlantic Y website is truly a dog. -

Moderator stop the violence; please, or at least corral the violence. Thanks. We do have visitors form around the country and around the world looking in on us.

Clinton Hill extends to Flushing, but in 2005 there was a "Wallabout Cultural Resource Survey" that covered the Clinton Hill blocks north of Myrtle. This survey is the basis of the proposed new landmarked district tentatively called "Wallabout", hence the confusion. Yes, you are in Clinton Hill, though over time, may be considered part of the potentially newly coined "Wallabout" landmark district.

Wallabout is not a newly coined name. I've called it Wallabout since 1996.

bedstuy Y is way to overcrowded now.. sucks!! now a gentrified Y Sad
This has not been my experience at all in the 3 or 4 months i've been a member there. i've only had to wait for an elliptical machine once and, the few times there have been more than one person vying for a weight machine, people have been good about asking if they can switch off sets. as far as being gentrified, it's hard to tell if you mean "people are richer" or "people are whiter": if the former, i always see a good mix but then again, beyond ostentatious displays of labels and gadgetry (which i've never seen on anyone in the bed-stuy y), i hesitate to judge someone's income by his/her appearance. if you meant the latter, i have also found this to be the opposite of my experience. i would estimate that 85% of the people in the gym while i'm ever there are people of color. still highly recommend this gym for price and basic services (never taken the classes, though) -
Welcome Urbancowgirl ! There is a fairly new gym on Fulton. I beleve it's near Brooklyn Tech Pl. and St. Felix. I have to smile over how everyone quibbles over the boundries. Supergirl, Wallabout was called Wallabout back in 1624 ! Check out... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallabout_Bay
