      Hello,

I just signed a sublet for a place at Tompkins and Halsey. The apartment was great and the neighborhood around there seemed pretty nice.

Does anyone have some tips for that area? Great places to try? Anything to watch out for?

I grew up in Detroit, so I'm pretty street smart. Anything I should know about living there in terms of safety, though? It seemed great during the day, but I haven't had a chance to go around there at night yet. If I'm coming home at night, am I better off getting off the A at Nostrand or Kingston-Throop? I didn't get the impression I would, but do I need to worry about coming home from the subway at night in that part of Bed-Stuy? (Late at night for me is likely more like 12-2, not 3-4)

Thanks! I appreciate any thoughts. I'm really excited about my move.

Unfortunately, you do need to be careful around there:

Stuff like that doesn't happen too much these days, but don't let your guard down.

Visit Hothouse, the restaurant at the corner of Tompkins and Hancock, one block away from your apartment. Talk to the employees and the locals there and you should be able to get a better sense of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is getting better and better but I would still be careful walking around alone late at night. I hope you enjoy your new home!

I lived on Willoughby and Tompkins for 4 years, so i was 15blocks down from you and rode the G train. I never personally had any problems but bad things did go down and if you weren't savvy or unlucky it could hit you too.

While I loved my block, I had some great neighbors who had lived there forever and it had a sense of community that is rapidly disappearing - there was also bums who defecated and urinated openly in the empty lot next door, people who openly abused and neglected their pets, a surplus of dying stray and ill stray cats, children who took pleasure in setting off car alarms, several landlords who didn't give a crap about their tenants, didn't live on site and didn't shovel their share during snow storms, idiots who screamed at their children from half way down the block for no reason, a few colorful local drunks, teenagers fighting and mouthing off at very late or early (your pick) hours, two shootings (neither fatal), one kid running from the cops through our backyard where he dropped his gun, and one neighbor who had the police at their door regularly. Shit happens everywhere though, when I lived in Boro Park my neighbors kid drowned 4 kittens and walked around barking.

Thanks for your responses so far, everyone. That shooting is horrible, and it's disturbing it was so close. I realize the neighborhood might be a bit rough around the edges. My plan is to mind my own business as much as possible and to stay away from the projects. Every time I've been on Fulton (which isn't that many--don't live there yet), there have been tons of cops around, though not sure if that's always the case. The other stuff you mentioned, Alana, I can deal with. My only worry(and I'm not THAT worried, or I wouldn't have moved there) is getting mugged.

Oh, and nearnostrand, I want to both thank you and curse you for telling me about that restaurant. It looks amazing, I just don't know if my waistline can handle it!
