I'm a non driver so please excuse my ignorance for what may be obvious to everyone else
Is it a illegal to make a left turn onto Lafayette from Fulton? Over the yrs I've become acustomed to everyone from taxis to friends making a left onto Lafayette fom Fulton...it was my chosen route home Manhattan. But (recently) everyone once in a while I'll get a taxi driver who'll express some concern that its an illegal turn..first happened last year. I don't usually pay attention to street signs but there is definetely a no-left turn sign....which would mean driving down Fulton and makin the next left.
Does that sign really mean no left onto Lafayette?
Has it always been there?
Have people always (and still do) ignore it? -

No, the sign is slightly ajar, but it is supposed to be facing Lafayette. So, you cannot turn left from Lafayette onto Fulton, but you can definitely turn from Fulton to Lafayette. I often have to explain this to cabbies myself.

escap is right. i do it all the time myself and when cabbies don't want to do it, i insist that it's okay. but i'm surprised that cabbies want to follow street signs, since they are often very reckless themselves..

That intersection is a nightmare, I believe the FGA is trying to do something about it.

I think the no left turn from Fulton applies to South Elliot which is one way into Fulton.

Just thought I'd bring this thread up again. Twice in the last week and a half I've had cabbies yell at me for asking them to make illegal left turns, to which I always defend my direction by saying I've taken the turn in cars & buses countless times in a perfectly normal (and legal) fashion. Both times I explained how the sign wasn't meant for people driving on Fulton, but rather drivers on the other side of Lafayette, but they just refused to believe me. The first guy had only been driving for 2 weeks so he was nervous about breaking any traffic laws (!) and said that if he was stopped for an illegal turn, I would have to pay his ticket. He turned, after seeing that cars in front of him were also making the turn, and didn't give us any further shit about it. The second time, which just happened last night, the cabbie was absolutely adamant that he not take the turn, that he couldn't because he was a cabbie, maybe buses are allowed to do it, but not cabs, no way, not doing it. He just refused to make the turn even though he saw other people doing it, so I told him to just drop me at the curb (I was splitting a cab with other people and didn't want to run the meter unnecessarily) and I walked the rest of the way home. Apparently nothing happened after thalia's 311 call in November. I'm going to call them again this week to clarify and make sure the sign makes sense to drivers who might be new to the area.
