Community School District 13’s New Middle School Option

Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn is a tuition-free, public school that will open its doors to 128 sixth grade students in the fall of 2013. Located at 432 Monroe Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, NY, Unity will serve one additional grade each year until reaching full size in 2019, serving over 800 students in grades six through twelve.

Unity’s founders currently seek individuals and organizations that can partner with the school to offer a diverse array of after school activities in such areas as music, visual arts, dance, yoga, team sports, chess, robotics, computer programming, and any other activity that can be both fun and educational.

“During the 2013-14 school year, Unity intends to offer 7-10 different after-school clubs to its128 6th grade students. We would like partnering organizations to offer one or two sections to groups of approximately 15 students,” said Hemanth Venkataraman, Director of Culture & Enrichment. A Unity faculty member will also be present to co-facilitate the club.

Clubs are electives - students express their preferences at the beginning of the school year and Unity’s club organizers try their best to match students with one of their top 3 choices. Students have the option to remain in their current activity or switch at the end of the trimester, which lasts about 12 weeks. It is preferred that organizations are able to staff an elective club for all three trimesters, but offerings of one or two trimesters can also be discussed.

Clubs are offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from 4:35pm - 5:30pm.

While clubs can be educational and pertinent to daytime lessons in the core subjects of math, science, English, and social studies, we would like them to be fun and ideally project- based. We would like students to have something to demonstrate or present by the end of a trimester. Thus, there must be an organized curriculum with a clear deliverable. Ideally, students who choose to remain in the same elective for multiple trimesters will be provided with opportunities to gain additional expertise in an area or skill and will have an even more advanced culminating project.

Individuals and organizations interested in submitting a proposal to Unity for consideration should forward it to Hemanth Venkataraman, Director of Culture & Enrichment / Co-founder at hvenkataraman@unityprep.org. Proposal submission deadline is 5pm April 30, 2013. Visit http://www.unityprep.org to learn more about Unity Preparatory Charter School of Brooklyn and to also complete an online application.
